Who among your neighbors is pro or anti gun? How do you determine this? If the topic comes up and you find out they own guns, do you tell them in turn… or do you stay mum?

The reason I bring this up, is I’ve heard some THR members rant to NEVER reveal to anyone if you own a gun- the less people who know the better. I understand the logic there- but aren’t you curious to know who on your block does own guns and what their views are? Maybe your neighbor could be a clay shooting pal but you’d never know if you don’t breech the topic.

Here is my story. We’ve lived in our new town house for six months. Generally it is younger couples- the town houses are new construction and it is a nice neighborhood. We finally got around to having a small BBQ with the neighbors (there are six town houses in a row) and it’s a general “get to know you” social function.

In conversation I played my cards pretty close to the vest, but as the night continued some common topics came up- lawn watering, deck maintenance, the other neighbors, and then… home security. Of course, first a few people said they have security systems (as advertised by the signs on their yards), but then one guy stepped up and said “I have a Sig Sauer pistol… you can’t wait around for 911 if intruders break in.” :D My ears perk up- things were getting interesting! Then my next door neighbor chimes in “I have a bat and knife in case anyone breaks in.” I stifle a chuckle, but hey he means well.

By night’s end I find out four out of six of the town houses are armed. :) One guy is former Army and is really into guns (and I never knew it). And even the single girl (GOP) has a Glock! It was a real delight to find out if things go sour around here, we won’t be the only ones armed. And not a single Hillary Clinton reaction to the conversation- we lucked out with good neighbors!

How did I react to this topic? I really resisted the urge to show my cards. Despite having enough Warsaw Pact rifles and ammo in the house to equip a Russian squad for patrol in downtown Grozny, I downplayed things and only mentioned I had a shotgun for shooting clays and self-defense. No need to reveal the full extent of the arsenal. :scrutiny:

So this thread doesn’t apply to those of you who live out in the sticks and don’t interact with anyone, or those in apartments where you get neighbors moving in and out every year. I am opening this up to anyone who wants to share experiences about the following:

- do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?

- how did you determine this?

- do you have a “zero disclosure” policy? (don’t tell anyone you own guns, regardless if the neighbor would make a great shooting pal)

- have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?

- have you ever been able to convert a neighbor or introduce him/her to guns?

(note: I'm not looking for flip replies on how you never tell anyone what guns you own, if this is the case elaborate on it)

* To end this on a positive note- my next door neighbor (who is currently unarmed) later came to me and said “you know, I really think I should look into getting a gun for home defense, maybe you could give me some tips.” :D So now, I am looking forward to instructing him on gun safety/education, getting some range time in, and then advising him on a good HD shotgun/pistol.

Great story, my neighborhood tends to be more "keep to yourself" for whatever reason.

- do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?

For the most part.

- how did you determine this?

Watch them the day before dove and deer season start :)

- do you have a “zero disclosure” policy?

Unless they see me carrying something to the car.

- have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?

I got a pretty funny look when UPS left 2 cases of .308 at my neighbors house by mistake :)

I don't

I don't tell anybody anything about anything (tools, guns, cars, etc.). Simply for the fact that I don't want stuff stolen. Word gets around whether it is intentional or not.

I had something much the same happen. Girl down the hall has a revolver, guy across the hall has a small collection of milsurps under the bed, guy and girl upstairs have trap guns, etc., etc.

My neighborhood also tends to be more "keep to yourself". I like that. It is why we moved to the neighborhood.

do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?
Mostly. Although I normally do not tend to group people on that basis.

how did you determine this?
Observation.

do you have a “zero disclosure” policy?
On guns, yes. Primarily because I'd rather not have word spread around and that knowledge fall to thieves.
If I carry a long gun outside my house, it is in a guitar case. Since they all know I play guitar and sing in a band anyway.

have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?
Nope. The ones who know I shoot don't seem to mind. It's really been a great big non-issue to me.

- do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?

Nope. I really don't care either.

- do you have a “zero disclosure” policy? (don’t tell anyone you own guns, regardless if the neighbor would make a great shooting pal)

Nope.

- have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?

Nope.

- have you ever been able to convert a neighbor or introduce him/her to guns?

Nope.

Might be because we mind our own business. Just like everyone else on the street.

Why do you care if your neighbors are pro or anti-gun? What are you going to do if they are anti? Cover your guns when you take them to your vehicle? Jump out of your front door when they are outside and point and glare at them like the Evil Monkey?

If you change what you do because someone is an anti, the problem isn't them...

I don't know about any of my current neighbors but my neighbor at my last residence had a Gunsite raven sticker on his Bronco, so I had an inkling about him.:D

Several times neigbors have walked by while I was loading EBRs in or out of my trunk and nobody ran off screaming so I'm not too worried.

The gunshop around the corner has a big sign that says "Guns are why America is still free." on one side and "You have the right to own a gun, you have the responsibility to learn how to use it. Sponsored by Gunsite Academy." on the other.

I shoot in my backyard, doesn't seem to bother the neighbors.

Some of my neighbors shoot in their yards as well, it doesn't bother me.

Out of the three houses on my road, my landlord is the only one I actually interact with. He's related to the folks in the other two houses.

- do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?
Most of my neighbors are older people and country people, so I tend to think they are pro or neutral but don't know for sure about any of them. There are a few staunch liberals that I figure for antis.

- how did you determine this?
Stereotyping and/or bigotry

- do you have a “zero disclosure” policy? (don’t tell anyone you own guns, regardless if the neighbor would make a great shooting pal)
I OC sometimes when working in the yard and don't usually put long guns in a case when moving them to/from the car. I think the people living around me can be trusted. That's not to say there aren't any questionable folk on the block, but I guess I'm just not worried about them.

- have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?
no reactions either way

- have you ever been able to convert a neighbor or introduce him/her to guns?
never had the opportunity.

Ha! I thought about this very topic a few days ago.

We are new home owners in a newer, younger community. Most of us are either medical, military, retired military, or some type of hybrid of the three it seems.

Generally everyone keeps to themselves but as of late, the neighbors a few blocks away experienced vandalism and we went on to hear through other channels of some home break-ins closer to us than I care to have happen. It had both of us concerned (enough to convince my wife I wasn't being paranoid from the start) so we figured to use this as motivation to get to know the few people we have on our street and let them know as well what was going on. Good bunch of folks. One very matter of factly said, "That's why I tell my wife if someone breaks into the house, she is to empty the magazine on them. She's home alone with the kids alot." The other neighbor said, "Geez, I guess I'm going to have to activate my alarm system. I have a gun though too."

As a side note.... I don't think I would vocalize my wife being home virtually alone alot or the status of my alarm system to ANYONE..EVER.

Generally I found out a few of my neighbors had firearms through casual conversation after I informed them of the activities going on. Although they seemed to offer information unsolicited, I did not offer specifically my status/position (though I was cc'ing the whole time) but agreed we had to do what we could to keep our family and friends safe. I believe they were on the same page.

I'm not exactly 100% where they all fall on the spectrum of pro or anti...but there are definitely some gun owners. Obviously you can be pro gun and not own one or anti gun but think its ok that Officer Bob carries for their safety. I even met some self loathing gun owners...I just do not know what to think of that....other than I would be happy to take their 'burdens' away. ;)

It will probably take a while before their colors start showing.

It depends on the people and how you talk to them. Mostly I tell people I'm a fairly big hunter, like to shoot clays and such recreationally, and crime concerns me. I let them talk to see where it'll go from there.

My neighbor across the way is in the Secret Service on the CAT (counter assault team). And yes I've seen his badge and take home G-ride. I assume he's fairly heavily armed.

Every one of my neighbors have seen me many times put a a cased or uncased gun in my truck to go hunting or shooting. They never blink an eye.

I introduced myself to a neighbor the other day when I saw him loading rifle cases into his car. I've lived here for 1.5 years and had never more than waved at him. Turns out he's pretty cool. He also works at the FN plant. I think it's safe to say he's pro-gun.

The first time I met another neighbor he was holding a Glock case. The neighbors next door have been shooting with me and want to take my CWP class. We're pretty well stocked with guns and good people around my place :)

I know the status of most of my neighbors, and they know a little about mine, mostly from waving at each other at 4:00 am on opening day as we're heading out to our respective stands. I don't really talk about the other firearms, but I know what my next-door neighbor has in his cabinet, because he left it open when they were out of town, and I went over to take care of their critters. Nice stash. Not as nice as mine!

I expect the minister across the street is probably not pro-gun, but, in this part of PA, you never know!

- do you know which of your neighbors are pro or anti gun?

Lady next door is pro but doesn't own, and her husband seems to be knowledgable as he commented on my Savage a while back (methinks he is a hunter), have never talked to the other's immediately next door. Otherwise, lots of former marines on my street so, read into that what you may.

- how did you determine this?

I don't try to hide it. Not shy about guns and neighbors are generally quite nice.

- do you have a “zero disclosure” policy? (don’t tell anyone you own guns, regardless if the neighbor would make a great shooting pal)

I'm pretty sure I just answered that.

- have you had any positive or negative reactions to neighbors who found out you own guns?

Both. Most people don't seem to care around here though and those that do are more worried about little Johnny seeing a guy walking around with a gun on his hip and thinking the wrong thing.

- have you ever been able to convert a neighbor or introduce him/her to guns?

Plan on trying this with a new couple that moved in a few houses down here in the near future.

My rationale for being open about it is that we are all ambassadors for our sport, right, and heritage to own guns for whatever purpose we desire. Our neighbors need to be reminded that people like them own guns and it doesn't hurt to have people like us around.

I park my truck bassackwards toward the gate and carry everything in either a backpack or a bat bag. Course, I live in a socialite neighborhood where cops are called for this and that.. I don't think my neighbors would understand...

I know most of my neighbors hunt. Everyone around here hunts. My one neighbor asked me last Christmastime if I'd help move a gun safe that she got for her husband into her house. I sold an SKS to one of my other neighbors. He's the mayor. One of my other neighbors is a big hunter, so I imagine he has a few firearms. I'd be more surprised to find a home in my neighborhood that didn't have at least one gun. Even though its a pretty gun friendly place, I make it a point not to let anyone know exactly what I own.

I open carry a lot...so anyone that is even passively observant knows I have at least one.

Also, I pack the car with about 5 trips of gear when heading to the range...so it's pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that I own a bunch.

I know our subdivision is well armed, through interactions with several neighbors. I've introduced a few to shooting as well. We'll be able to hold off the zombies.

I know two of my neighbors are pro-gun. One because his sub-ten-year-old son came around one day talking about his dad's AR-15. The other because he mentioned his hunting experience. I haven't told them I'm pro-gun, and I'll bet they would not know it from looking at me. I don't hunt, I don't own a piece of camo clothing. (Well, ok, a desert boonie cap I got at a gun show.) My wife, daughters and I often wear tie-dyed tee shirts, and I have a tie-dye license plate frame on my truck. (What can I say, I like tie-dye) I think the one neighbor found out when he collected my mail one weekend, and there was a package in there from the NRA. :D

You go over and ask "Hey, we are setting up a kill zone. You in or you out?"
(Just kidding.)

Actually it is a good question.

I shoot & reload with 1 next door. The other next door is pro-gun, just doesn't flaunt it. I know we all have the safes & etc.
I know the others & what there deal is. We live in a relatively small community & guns are not taboo. Basically not an uphill struggle for me.

Now, if I moved into a new strange place I'd have to start from scratch.
