Disabling your gun when leaving it in your vehicle

I use a pair of handcuffs to secure my revolver to the frame of the truck seat. I simply place one cuff behind the trigger, between the trigger and the trigger guard and angle it over the hammer, making it impossible to cock, and impossible to shoot in DA. On my truck it is tough to get a good angle and enough room to use a hack saw. Double lock cuffs will slow 'em down even more. Cuffs can be picked quite easily, but if it's your average thief, I like my chances in a dash and run car break-in. If they're stealing my truck outright, they're going to get the gun eventually. BTW, I only use this method on my stainless guns. Peace and God bless, Wolfsong.

Just run a piece of det cord down the barrel....:D

Very nice! How about locking it in a container marked DANGER LIVE SCORPIONS. Or if you are really gonzo lock it in an unmarked container with the actual live scorpions!

Kind of a useless thread. If you secure your gun in your vehicle in any manner if your vehicle is stolen your gun is gone. Whether that is just pieces of your gun, in a safe, cuffed to the seat, gun locks whatever.

If you know you can't take it "in" with you where ever it is you are going and your concerned about your car being stolen, don't go or leave it at home

It completely blows me away how many people are OK with not carrying all the time, whenever they can. It's almost as if they carry only when it's convenient.

I value my rear-end a lot more than I value convenience. No, I don't live in a high-crime area but there are a lot of dead, mugged, assaulted, raped, etc. people that didn't live in high-crime areas either when they were made a victim.

I also don't often go to places where carrying isn't allowed but when I do, I am carrying on the way there and on the way back.

This is all just my opinion of course but you never know when lightning is gonna strike. Like the Boy Scouts always say, BE PREPARED.

I agree with others that futzing around with your gun in a parking lot is a recipe for an AD or a brandishing charge.

I keep a Kahr MK40 in a pocket holster in the glove box of my truck ALL THE TIME. This is legal in AZ, with or without a CCW permit. This way I have a carryable gun with me whenever I leave the house. Its a sub-$500 gun, so in the unlikely event of my truck being stolen, I am only out a small amount of $$$. Could this put a gun in the hands of a criminal ? Sure, but its not like criminals have trouble getting hold of guns on the black market. I sleep OK at night with this decision.

The biggest problem I have with leaving a gun in the car all the time is the number of places where doing so can get you in BIG trouble. This will depend on your circumstances. Personally, I've made lots of interstate and international drives on very short notice, and risk forgetting that a gun is in the car.

Man, can I identify with this:

"And of course I think my method is the best, otherwise I'd do something different. This is the same answer I give my wife when she says I think I am alway right. If I knew I was wrong, wouldn't I change my mind? I am open for other suggestions. Jeez, that's why I asked for other opinions from you all."

I think your concerns are valid, given our litigious and increasingly liberal society. I think the idea of attempting to disable or lock the firearm in the vehicle is a futile act given your stated goals. If they steal your car, they've got an indefinate period of time to find missing parts or bust open a lock box or cut a gun lock. If they break in and steal your firearm and/or container, the same situation is present. In my opinion, you've got to first decide how important and how valid your concerns are in your particular jurisdiction. And second, realize that you really only have two choices here: leave your loaded weapon locked in the car or don't carry it on trips to destinations that do not allow concealed carry. That's a ****ty decision to have to make--risk lawsuit and/or a liberal DA's office (your life, in essence) v. risk your life by forfeiture of your ability and right to defend yourself with deadly force. Yeah it sucks, but in my opinion, that's the choice you've got to make.

Ok, I drive a Durango, (no trunk). Have a lock box center of the rear seat on the "cup holder/ arm rest". 4 buttons on it the combo would never be figured out because most people don;t know you can use 2 buttons as 1 digit  , there is a S&W 457compact in it at all times, I personally carry a XD-40 subcompact. I carry ALL the time. If I have to go someplace where carry is not allowed I remove my XD, place it in the safe and forget about it. if they don't like my holster then tough S***. If they don't like my extra loaded mag, well maybe tough S*** on me, never had a problem yet. Now on the other hand, if I am going out of town and know I'll be visiting a resturant that I can't carry in, then I'll bring along my bug in my pocket, no one will ever know it's there unless I am required to use it.

My son also wears his S&W M&P9C and it fits in the box as well.

Never worried about the lock box since if I'm home I can see and hear you from anywhere around my house :D and if I travel out of town it goes with me in to the motel / hotel room. Other than that most of the time I can see my durango.

However since reading this I may bolt it down to slow down the smash and grab types.
