Do most gun owners drive pickup trucks?

Do you own, or have you in the past owned a pickup truck

  • Yes as a gun owner, I also own or have owned a pickup truck (an SUV or similar does NOT qualify!!)

Ok, I know this may sound off topic, but it isnt. I am getting sick and tired of the pickup truck and gun stereotype. I hear many people state that when they see a pickup truck they are more likely to think the driver owns a gun. Now I know a lot of hunters that do drive pickups for practical reasons, but many believe that more gun owners own pickup trucks than gun owners who own cars or SUV's. I believe this stems from the thought that rednecks like pickup trucks and guns, so if you have guns you probably have a pickup truck and if you have a pickup truck you must have a gun. I do happen to be a proud owner a big mean looking Ford F250, so I happen to help help justify their stereotype, what about you?

Maybe you should do a poll on the type of motor vehicle owned.

I know when I go to the range most of the vehicles there are either trucks or SUVS (of course the fact that the range is in the back of a landfill might have something do to with that :) ). My main means of transportation is my Ford Ranger.

The poll is posted, I was having problems as one of my poll options was over 100 charecters and would not post. Please vote, I am pretty interested to see how this turns out.

Your second option makes it sound like "no to the gun owner" part--you might just have "I do own a pickup" or "I don't own a pickup". Or delete the "yes" and the "No" at the beginning, and just have it "as a gun owner, I do/don't own pickup". Yes, I am a grammar nazi, but that took me a second to figure out.

And for the record, I drive a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. :D

Heck yeah!

It's somewhat misleading. For the first 25 of the 30 years that I have been driving/owning firearms, I drove cars. I switched to truck/Jeep about 5 years back due to wanting to drive something bigger, heavier.

Some months back, someone did a thread about what we do (work) and what we drive.

I have a pickup truck that has deer, NRA and Hoyt decals in the back window, and a decal on the driver's side rear window that says "There's nothing in this truck worth getting shot for."

My everyday vehicle is a Saturn car that has NRA and Steelers decals in the rear window.

So stereotype or not, people on the road can pretty well guess that I'm a gun guy. Funny thing, no matter how slow I drive, I get very little road rage directed at me. :)

Oh my Gosh! They are right!

I own a pick-up truck too and I alledgedly own guns too!

Hey does it still count if the truck doesn't run very well - have to use starter fluid to get her to catch.

I/we have 2 cars also though.

My wifes primary vehicle/car has about 40,000 miles on it

My car has about 245,000 miles and my truck about 250,000.

We have three vehicles cause we is rich. :)

I drive a firebird formula(has corvette LT1 engine), I carry my guns in a rack I built in the truck area under the rear hatch. hold 5 plus area for ammo and handguns.

I'm a big-ol-NO. I've driven a 1989 toyota tercel, 1969 volkswagen deluxe sedan, and currently drive a 2005 volkswagen MKIV GTI with a 1.8liter 20 valve turbo motor and a five speed, I like that a hatchback will securely hold a bunch of stuff (even more with the back seat down) and I get 30 mpg on the highway.

My dad is on his second truck, a toyota tecoma, he drove a ford ranger before that. I may get (to buy) the tacoma when he's done with it.

I've been considering a truck or suv latey for the off-road capability. That, or a Baja bug.

I don't think that is a fair question since where I live most everyone hunts.

The weather is really crappy in the wintertime and you come to appreciate 4 wheel drive.

One half of all vehicle sales - where I live is pick up trucks. SUV's and anything 4 wheel drive. It's a necessity.

When I worked in Pittsburgh, one of my co workers brough in a sales flyer for a local gun shop. There was 11 pages of hand guns and 1 page of rifles.

Where as - where I live there is 10 pages of rifles and shotguns and 3 pages of scopes and 2 pages of ammo and maybe 2 pages of clothing and 1 page of pistols. So even though there is more demand for pistols in the city. There is less need for them in the country where there are more opportunities to hunt and less of a need for protection.

In the city, when a person wants a hunting rifle you either have to buy what ever is on the rack of the local gun store or what ever Wal Mart sells or else you have to special order it. Same with scopes and hunting accessories.
On the other hand, I know of people here that were Married and Buried wearing cammo clothing.

So when you say guns -- are you refering to any kind of guns or are you refering to handguns? Are you talking about city people or country people?

Just because you have a gun does not make you a red neck...

My pickup

My pick up is my range truck. I can carry targets to the range including my steel plate racks and dueling tree.

I have a 1993 Chevy Silverado 2500 4WD (185k miles), Honda CR-V (my daily ride), Acura MDX (wifes ride) and a 1972 Buick GS455  (71k miles) in the garage. I like driving the truck best. :D

I had to answer yes, I have owned pickup trucks but they are by no means my vehicle of choice.

My first vehicle was an '82 Ford F-250 with a 460 that I inherited from my grandfather. He had used it to haul his camper for years and so it had extra stiff rear springs installed. I hated it. It was slow, got about 8MPG, and handled like a pig. I traded it in on an RX-7 ASAP.

Some years later I bought a little late 70's Toyota pickup from a friend for $100. I beat it around the woods for a summer and had a great time with it. It was a lot of fun simply because it was such a POS. The interior was mostly gutted and coated with spray on bedliner and the body barely had a single undented panel. When the summer was over I sold it to another friend for $50.

I've always been more of a sportscar guy. How many guns can you get in the cab of a pickup anyway?

You should create another choice for just SUV owners.

I fit that category. Pickups don't work for me because I like to keep my dogs out of the rain.

I think you need more options to choose from on the poll. I am a gun owner. I don't currently own a pick-up, but I have in the past and might in the future.
I am current required to drive a Honda Pilot (carpool) but my preferred cage (as opposed to my FZ-1) would be a Honda Civic.

Had a 4wd Ranger 5-speed 'til she gave up 5th gear.:fire:
Got a Jimmy 4wd now. Never again!!!!
Lusting after a late '80's-early '90's 4Runner.
