I know this may be newbie and childish, but I bought a rifle that has a stainless barrel and hardware, and quickly bought a matte black scope. Looking at it, it looks like a silver finish Leupold would "match" better...but I am afraid if I ever ditch the rifle, the silver finish scope would be a harder resale...anybody have any opinions on this, or on this "matching" subject in general? Do the matte finishes hold up better? do you guys have stainless barrels and black scopes? Am I being rediculous?

Lord knows I want whats fashionable!:D

I personally would not expect any difference in resale value between the a Leupold Matte scope or a Silver one. I like the looks of a Silver scope on a stainless barrell better than a Matte, but some one else could answer the total opposite. It is all in the personal opinion.

I try to match the gun. Two of my stainless S&W 629 Classics wear Leupold silver scopes/mounts and a blued S&W M41 wears a blue/black Leupold scope/mount. Don't know or care what the resale value is because they won't be sold in my lifetime!

Good shooting and be safe.

xd- yes, you're being ridiculous. resale value is the same.

if you are buying your gear w/ the intent of reselling it, you are buying the wrong gear.

i have matte scopes on stainless guns, silver/stainless, silver/blue, etc... it makes no difference - whatever your preference. i'm a raider fan, so the last gun i put together, i put together keeping the silver/black theme... silver scope, black rings, silver gun, black stock, silver triggerguard, black trigger, silver sling swivel studs, silver bolt shroud, black bolt body (ceramic coated, fluted... i wanted the flutes silver, but the smith drew the line there)... point is, do what ya like...

there is less demand for a silver leupold so yes, the black scope would be an easier sell. that's a fact.

I know it sounds stupid...I am just investing alot of moolah (to me) in this rifle, and I want to do it right. I am leaning towards sending back the matte scope...

XD,
You must make your own choice. If it will help you visualize the result or make up your mind, attached is a picture of my stainless S&W M629 Classic in .44 Mag with silver Leupold scope and silver Leupold mount/rings. If you prefer the matte black, go for it. If you like the silver, likewise.

Beautiful rig! Do you have a resource for the silver leupold bases/rings? They seem to be harder to find.

XD,
I got my scope and mounts/rings from local gunshop several years ago when I bought the gun. Was not aware they were difficult to find. Have you checked Midway's, Brownell's, or some of the other online sources?

Good shooting and be safe.

The silver would be a harder sell if you ever tried to get rid of it. I would say keep the silver scope with the rifle as a unit and don't separate them. Keep them as a unit or sell them as a unit.

Silver Scopes have less resale value for two reasons:

First, there are more blued guns in the world than stainless steel ones. Since more people want their guns and scopes to match rather than to be mis-matched, the stainless scopes are in less demand and command a lower price.

Second, many people disfavor stainless anything because it reflects light and draws more attention to the location of the shooter. It's kind of the anti-camo.

That said, if I liked it, I wouldn't give a crap what the resale value was.
