As of 1/19 with 100 respondents:

61% carry a spare mag (or its equivalent)
35% carry no spare mag (or equivalent)
4% carry a New York reload, though some respondents fall into this category as well as another.

More respondents carry extra mags than I would have anticipated (but this statistic is skewed because respondents to this poll do not represent a fair cross-section of CCW holders). Many respondents carry backup mags in the event of magazine failure rather than for the extra bullets.

37% carry a handgun that holds between 8 and 11 rounds
31% carry a handgun that holds more than 11 rounds
28% carry a handgun that holds 7 rounds or less

The gun holds 8+1, and I carry 1 reload.

I probably won't need to take advantage of the quick reload afforded by the autoloader, but then again I probably won't need the gun itself, either. If I'm going to be prepared for the worst, I might as well plan for one step past that while I'm at it.

If I can't do what needs to be done inside 15 yrds with 11 rounds of 230 grain rangers....I'm runnin!

My CCW holds 7+1. I do not carry extra ammo. I figure the gun is enough to keep up with weight wise. I go the rule that most gunfights only consist of 3 shots. If I were going to an area that I really thought was shady, I might grab an extra mag.

I ALWAYS carry at least one reload, be it a spare mag or a moonclip, depending on what I'm carrying.
The magazine is the weak link in any semi-auto platform, to carry a spare only makes sense, regardless of capacity.
Remember, two is one and one is none.

I carry no xtra mags, I figure the situation will be over before a reload will be required. An encounter in a public place would require precision rather than a barrage. Public encounters usually happen at very close range. (i.e. gas stations, parking lots of grocery stores..ect)
That being said I keep a "New York" style reload by the bedside. A home invasion may require substantial more firepower to rectify the situation.

I carry a 1911 with 2 spare mags.
I dont carry them for the extra rounds really... but because magazine issues are the #1 cause of autoloader malfunctions.

I carry a six-shot revolver with no extra ammo and have never felt undergunned with that. Studies have shown that you're not going to need more than six shots to take care of business in about 99% of personal defense situations. Hell, in about 90% of situations, the assailant will break off and run as soon as he sees your gun without you having to fire a single shot.

I carry the Para Gun Rights model and most of the time I do not carry a reload. However, When I know I'm going somewhere that can be dangerous I always carry a reload. I try to stay away from those places most of the time

DEFCONs

I have a progressive carry system. You'll notice weight goes up with just how much I anticipate trouble (and can't carry a rifle).

5.) S&W 340 M&P (5 shot) - total 5 rounds
4.) S&W 340 M&P with 1-2 speed loaders - total 10-15 rounds
3.) S&W 325PD (6 shot) with 2 full moon-clip reloads - total 18 rounds
2.) Springfield XD45 service with 1 reload - total 27 rounds
1.) Springfield XD45 service with 2 reloads - total 40 rounds

I carry 1 extra mag, the chances of me needing it are slim, but then again the chances of me needing my gun are slim, but I still carry it. you never know what situation you may be in, and I carry a spare mag not because I may need 17 rounds of 45...but because if I have a jam for some reason the best thing to do is drop your mag, clear the gun, and put in a new mag (from what I can tell this is the best way insure that you wont have another jam.)

its all about being prepared, and crying an extra mag really isn't that difficult.

Well we seem to have very optimistic carriers and very paranoid carriers. Personally I lean towards paranoia when it comes to self defense. Murphy runs the Universe.

The one auto loader I carry is an 8 +1, and I carry 2 spare mags on the off side. Balances out very well side-to-side that way. And It's just a little 380, so spare mags aren't big or bulky.

carried for 46 years, never once had to draw my handgun, I for me just feel no nee dto carry extra magazine. If I can't do it in 7 I am probalby already dead. Probably me but I am not that paranoid about my satefty either, course agian if I lived in some of these very high risk areas, I WOULDMOVE...

I carry a reload for any handgun I carry.I also live where there is more stuff to shoot than just BGs.

And he seems to pick on some of us more than others. I'm apparently on his speed dial. :)

I didn't know how to answer the poll since I usually carry an extra gun(s) and extra ammo.
Me too.
