Do you hide 'em from the neighbors?

I don't go out of my way to hide, but i do keep things discreet. At this point anyone who knows me even slightly knows my hobbies and all of the neighbors have seen the numerous trips with funny looking cases it takes to go to the car for a day at the range.

I don't advertise to new people but everyone around me seems to think its okay to let others know of my hobbies. At this point it is out of the bag for the most part, but then again everyone who knows me also has the frame of mind that they shouldn't come to my place looking for trouble or something to steal. This is a frame of mind that others have fostered and I am not inclined to disuade them.

The roses for our wedding came in a long, sturdy cardboard box. Neighbors musta thought I was always in trouble, bringing big bunches of roses home all the time. ;) Of course that was in a pretty shady neighborhood; I'm not saying the neighbors were selling crack, but I'd bet they were using it. Low key is the way to go. I'd hate to see my gun used to rob a liquor store....

I ran into the guy that just moved in across the street at the range. We didn't even recognize eachother at first but now we know some of the arsenal lurking across from eachother so hopefully no inocents get caught in the crossfire of the Hatfields and McCoy's.:D

Keep a low profile and don't let anyone know your business----cause its none of their business.

In this day and age discretion is a givin.

While I don't live in the country, I'm VERY lucky with the neighbors I have in the townhouses where I live. A couple of weeks ago my car alarm went off at 10:30 at night, and three of the neighbors responded along with me...:D Between us we had two Glocks, one HK, and one Winchester 870... and TWO of the people that responded were women! With one exception, everyone on the street is either current or retired active duty, and the exception is a female lawyer that goes to the range with us on occasion:evil: My neighbor and I have exchanged inventory disks and we cover for each other when one is on travel.

If you live in a "bad" area, that is anit's and gangs, do what a person I know in England does to keep his neighbors from calling the shoot first, question after, hit squads in Merry Olde, he wears knickers, a sweater and a Hogan cap and loads the long guns, all he can have there, in a golf caddy cart and the ammo in a picnic basket.
Ain't it a damn shame! :barf:

I live in a VERY small rural Iowa town, and most of my neighbors are good people. There isn't much point in my being overly discrete, because anyone who uses the local outdoor range knows that I have at least a few nice handguns anyway, and word gets around whether you like it or not. Still, I don't advertise how much stuff I've got, and I try to keep people guessing as to whether or not I'm home. While small, rural, towns are still pretty safe, some of the worst types among us see them as easy pickings.

I shoot at my place nearly every Saturday. Kinda hard to hide it from the neighbors. The nearest one is about 100 yards away and I hear lots of semi-auto fire from back there. The farmer across the road opened up with a semi of some kind last week. There are shooters all around the area. Almost have to pity the bad guys that come around here.

No, while I don't advertize, I refuse to wear that tin foil hat!! I have a safe and an alarm system for times when I am not there. If someone tries to break in and I am there,..... well ......let's not go there.

I live in ‘town’, if you can even call it that. Got neighbors on both sides of me, a little redneck barbershop across the street, and the college dorms about 75 yards up the hill. When I pack up to go to the range I like to walk out the front door with a CETME in my hand, a 1911 on my side, and wearing full web gear weighted down with 308 mags. Preferably around lunchtime so the barbershop is full. (Makes for great small town rumors; DEA, CIA, lunatic, etc.)

The barbershop is open throughout the afternoon and there are always a LEO or two over there, so I figure they can keep an eye on the place during daylight hours. Most of the criminal type folks around here are dope heads and would probably break into a house after dark, but luckily I’m a night owl and tend to stay home in the evenings.:D

Worst-case scenario, I have all my toys insured, so they could be replaced. I think I’m more worried about my collection of Machine Gun News magazines getting stolen than my guns!

I figure if I'm afraid to exercise my civil rights, I don't still have them.
I call BS - no, wait - I call Missing the Point.

Maybe you only read the title of the thread, sir, but we're not talking about avoiding the disapproval of Million Moms. We're talking about keeping criminal eyes from knowing which house they could steal guns from.

On the 4th of July, when all the neighbors are sitting around the cul de sac in downtown Bothell (liberal suburb of Seattle), about 50 yards from the school, three blocks from the police station, drinking wine and shooting off the illegal fireworks they just bought at the Indian Reservation, I fill up the muzzel loader with black powder and a newspaper wad and let all the kids shoot it into the air (safety lessons included). I think they have figured it out.

I conceal everything! And I go out of my way to do so if i have to. I recently married but kept my apartment in the city (the Mrs. has money so she already had a big house in the coutry) and now find myself rotating my firearms amongst 4 different residences (apartment in the city, parent's home way north of town, wife's home way south of town, and ex-wife's home way west of town). I also keep at least a case of handgun ammo and several hundred rounds of 6.5 x 284 Norma and/or .300 WSM at each of these residences as well. But I digress. The reasons for all the trouble are not just for the purpose of preventing loss of my entire cache of arms all at once. And I don't suppose I need to elaborate in present company.

Loading the truck!

Hi All,
In some states firearms in cars must be cased. However, I put the long gun in a cheap case and then back into one of the cardboard shipping boxes. When I used to live in an apartment complex one of my neighbors noticed I went 'camping' a lot. As long as the guns were in cases they were legal. The cardboard boxes in the back of the covered pickup were just 'boxes'!
HTH,
Rob

Out here in the bush it's not really a big issue. Everyone knows me and know I can hold out for three days under siege.:D Everyone here is always toting a rifle or shotgun anyway.

My neighbor up the street has more than I do.

However at my Fairbanks residence I'm a little more discreet. I don't hide my guns or cases when I'm taking them out the truck, but I don't dally when I do.
Neighbors on one side and us watch each other's home when we're away. I don't know the folks on the other side, but their boys sure can shoot a mean hockey puck.

Well, I don't run around in the yard screaming when I load up the car, but I don't hide in the bushes waiting for cars to pass either. I pull in the garage when I can.

Carrying multiple guns on a vacation outing could prove too be a bad idea. Just suppose that for some ungodly reason you got stopped
out of state, by a state trooper and the guns were discovered. He/she
trumphs up some charge in order too confiscate your firearms. . . . .

Back too the original question, NO I don't advestise my weapons. But,
my neighbors know that I'm a former LEO

Am I the only one who missed this one? You have worked as a police officer, and you have such a dim view of your fellow officers that you actually believe this is a foreseeable event? I won't go on vacation in a state I can't carry in, and plenty of states now recognize other states' permits. Even a Utah non-resident gets you pretty far these days.

But I just found this statement mindboggling. You think officers you worked alongside would attempt to steal a man's gun for himself like this?

The neighbors that know I have Guns shoot with me:). The neighbors that dont shoot with me dont know I have guns.

We are a Multi Scary Black Rifle Neighborhood and darn proud of it:D

My votes for discretion. It's a big stretch from being prudent to being ashamed of firearms ownership. I don't flash money or credit cards on the street. But I am ashamed of having neither.

Also, just because they can't get your guns doesn't mean they will leave your home empty handed. Can you secure all of your other high dollar items along with your firearms?

I'll worry about that when I get some of those high-dollar type things.

I only have 3 neighbors. One has twice as many guns as I do,one doesn't own guns himself but is the definition of Libertarian, and the third comes shooting with me twice a month or so and says that she's glad to have us as neighbors. My entire town is smaller than many subdivisions in both size and population so we don't have too many gun stealing rings operating locally.I have NRA,shooting club,Glock and Sig Sauer stickers on the back of my Land Rover -it's more to throw the liberals into a tizzy than anything, then they notice my Save Tibet,Reduce-Recycle-Reuse stickers and get confused.

i can't really hide them from the neighbors unless the neighbors are deaf.
if i'm not shooting out back, one of them is shooting on their property.:) .
some weekends it sounds like a small scale war is going on.
we did have someone move out here that didn't like guns. new guy called the police, police said there was nothing they could do, new neighbor is now ex-neighbor.:D
