behind enemy lines...NO MORE. Made it to Free Ari
The Dickson, PA thread has me really wanting to just flat out say that LEOs are the enemy. I have worked with a big city cop in a different capacity and he further supports this growing concern of mine (hardcore anti).

BUT....

I know in reality they're not. Just like all other walks of life and professions, you have the few bad apples that ruin it for the rest. But I am asking for a little reinforcement from others' personal experiences here to dispel my ever increasing suspicions.

SO....

Anyone personally know a pro gun cop? I'm not talking someone that is indifferent. I am talking the 'Molon Labe' types. The THR junkie, NRA bumper sticker, .45 over 9mm all day types. I personally don't know any. I know an antigun cop though.

I pray this thread gets huge:)

I live next to a cop. Our families have been friends for fifteen years. I guess I should find out one day. I know for a fact that he keeps a file-sized box full of probably 500-600 hollowpoints for his issued glock under his bed. I bet he 'appreciates' guns, but isnt what you'd truly call pro-gun.

Well first off it's Texas but ...... :)

Yes I know a lot of Pro 2A cops. The Chief of Police where I grew up used to let me use the city shooting range to practice for IPSC matches on the condition that I be the handcuff practice dummy on training days. He shot IPSC with me but I always shot better than him ;)

When I was in high school he was still a patrol cop and I was shooting skunks off my front porch, right in the middle of town. We'd had a bad rash of rabid skunks in the city and I was just doing my part :)

One of the neighbors apparently called dispatch about a shooting in town and he came by to see what was up. While explaining the rules against shooting a gun in town a clearly rabid skunk walked out into the street.

He drew his service .45, shot the skunk, got back in his car and said "forget everything I just said, keep shooting".

He radioed in that it was all OK and drove off........animal control started making regular patrols by to pick up the carcasses.

He was soon promoted to Chief, about the same time Hughes was passed in 1985. He called me personally to say that I should get Form 1's and 3's into him as soon as possible so he could sign them and get the transfers done while there was still time.

I was only 18 at the time so he helped my dad do several NFA transfers and get us in under the wire.

Good cop and good guy. Dated my step sister for a while until we all talked him out of it :)

Several of them. Competition shooters, historical firearms collectors, very competent instructors. On the other hand, the ones I know have all been met at a range, I do not meet many line police officers, so the statistics may be skewed.

At least one of them I would be happy to fight with anywhere.

The president of my old gun club -- a long-time silhouette competitor who switched to NRA action pistol -- was a police pistol instructor. And when my home was broken into a number of years ago, the responding officer -- an ex-SEAL and IDPA competitor -- spent 15 minutes taking my report and an hour chatting about guns and shooting. So yeah, they're out there.

Pretty much all of the Sheriff's substation in Ft. Bragg, CA. to begin with.

Every cop I know by name is pro-gun, from one of my best friends to my section leader in the Guard.

Do you know a pro gun cop?

Sure, and I've known quite a few police officers over my 27 years as a police/911 dispatcher. Pro-gun police appear to be the norm here in the Southeast, rather than the exception.

I used to know a very pro-gun and pro-self-defense sheriff's deputy (retired) who was also the rangemaster at my old club. Gruff but a nice guy, told me he'd been in 3 gunfights and had been shot in one of them. He used to give me handgun fighting tips and pointers, and if it happened to be just him RSOing and me at the club, he would put me through various pistol and self-defensive drills too. He said he was trying to convince as many club members as possible to get their CCW permits (perhaps a third or half of the club did). So, there was at least one LEO in our part of the state who was most definitely pro-gun. (He also liked to stir the pot with stuff like 45 vs 9mm and so forth, even if he isn't on THR)

I can name a few off the top of my head. One is retired chief and the other is a state trooper the others volunteered to go to Iraq. These are my references every time I apply for a pistol purchase permit in this blankity blank state.

I know 2 Chicago officers (the only Chicago cops I know) who are extremely pro-gun. One is ALL for CCW, even in the city. The other, um, disagrees with Daley. :D

Have been teaching here in Georgia for 28 years and at least 25 of my former students are now in law enforcement. Coupled with several friends who are about my age I know a lot of cops. None here are anti-gun and most are very pro-gun.

I live in Toronto, Canada. I would guess that some of the older generation of police constables would be somewhat pro gun. But, the current crops.........pro gun police in Toronto? Fairy tale.

One of my good buddies here in SoCal with whom I shoot skeet and sporting clays twice a week is a LEO. We'll be hunting together this year too.

I also know another LEO from Indiana. He's not really a gun guy but took the effort to have me shoot with him at the range under the police station. He's retired now and while he probably doesn't even own a gun, I know he has a friend with a full auto license. They take them out once or twice a year to blow off ridiculous amounts of ammunition. He's certainly not an anti.

There are several cops that paticipate in our weekly IPSC matches in CA. They seem to interact with the other shooters well enough. I doubt they'd play with us civilians if they were antis.

When I was a kid, all the local cops (small town Ohio) knew I hunted. It was never a big deal.

The only other LEO interaction was one here in LA that happened to be driving by as I was having a gun safe unloaded for delivery. We said hello, he said "That's a beauty, way to keep 'em in style". Probably not an anti either.

Maybe I've just been lucky.

I think the original poster needs to define what pro-gun means for a cop. My definition would be "the cop wants and encourages citizens to carry concealed legally." That would be a good simple test to see if a cop is truly pro-gun. Cops who are excited about skeet shooters or target shooters at the range means little.
