Do you own a silencer?

I have a Gemtech Blackside. It's ok. Much quieter when wet.

I really want an AAC Evo .45 though.

AWC for 45acp,
2x KAC for 308win,
Smith Enterprises for 223rem,
YHM for 22lr
(seems like I'm missing something)

people are generally against them because they assume that you are going to be running around capping people hit-man style if you have a suppressor. They dont take into account the fact that it makes it safer for your hearing and it wont piss your neighbors off when you want to shoot on your own land. (out of the city limits of course)

P.S. Thernlund that is an awesome picture, I love it!

I'm waiting to get my first Form 4 back so I can pick up mine (for a .22lr).

I've heard that too. Makes me want to grab a hacksaw and go cut the muffler off their car. The fact that hollywood makes every suppressed gun from a .22 to a .50bmg sound like a chipmunk fart doesn't help the image either (although it would completely rock if they did sound that quiet).

How're you liking your HK Tac / SWR HEMS combo?

I was thinking of the same for mine but ended up deciding to go with the CCFA carbon fiber model. I'm happy with mine - but there's always a little wonder in the back of your mind... Was the other one better?

So, with that in mind, whaddaya think about us putting on a meeting someplace (suppressor-freindly) where we can shoot & compare the noise signitures of our various "Hollywood-quiet" pistolen?

I'm going to be in-country for pretty much all of May and could join up at one of the usual suspects - preferably before they've all been closed for demolition.

It really chapped me that I was on an extended trip when I heard Stan's closed. Boy I sure like the CHL range at the far end...

Stan let us do all the *bad* things there. Draw from holster, shoot from hip, movin' 'n shootin', shooting on your back, on your side, set up "No Shoots" - it was all good. He'd give you the furry eyeball before letting you use that part of the range as you have to agree to self-RO.

Anyway, it'd be a fun outing - whaddaya say?

I might even unpack my break-apart SS 336

Its not lawful here in Missouri to own one, but this thread has motivated me to get up off my rear and start making phone calls and writing letter to my representatives.

If everyone else in Missouri would do the same we might be able to make a change.

Ok.... I gotta know.

where and HOW to get one? I hear about the $200 tax stamp, but where can i learn about the whole process? and where to get a threaded barrel....

sorry to hijack :uhoh:

Question on noise please~~~

I don't own a silencer. I never really wanted one... so far.

I wonder if you wear very good EAR and eye protection how much more quiet it would be if you put a silencer on your firearm.

Can anyone tell me this? I am curious. Are gun shots really far more QUIET no matter what caliber you shoot like you see in the movies? Excuse my ignorance in these matters. Thank you.

I think that they are legal out here but i have not checked the 'laws' recently.

My groom/husband talked about silencers before. He does not own one.

Interesting thread. Thanks!

Wish I could. MI doesn't allow suppressors. Had a Gemtech .22 suppressor when I lived in WI. Had to sell when I moved.

Good questions. I'll do my best to give you the straight dope:

1. Hearing protection protects YOUR ears, silencers protect YOURS and everyone elses (for example, your dog cannot readily wear ear plugs or muffs). It keeps neighbors friendly, and lets you shoot without disturbing everyone.
Ear-pro in addition to silencers is what I use when shooting indoors, it makes a big difference as the muzzle blast is eliminated. Ear muffs: -30db + -32db plugs, when coupled to a silencer of -30db, it all adds up (thought not linearly) and certainly helps.

2. Calibers do make a difference; Muzzle blast will be greatly reduced for all calibers, but the supersonic crack will remain for faster bullets. I put cans on my rifles as well as pistols and contend that elimination of the booming muzzle report is very important. Supersonic crack cannot be eliminated, but by itself is still far quieter than sans silencer.

3. Yes, they're legal in Montana.

I have a very quiet setup. I use a Contender G2 pistol (single shot; no gas leak in action) a 10.5 inch barrel shooting sub-sonic (target) 22lr ammunition. Each time I fire in the sticks (out in the middle of nowhere where you can hear a twig break) it sound like you rapped an empty can of soup with a spoon.

Last winter it got cold enough to make my bullets supersonic. CRACK!!! Now it sounded like a gun shot.

In general, silencers (suppressors) reduce the blast enough to be safe enough to shoot without ear protection. But anything above 22lr subsonic is not quiet.

Now I have only 2, one for Anschutz .22 LR rifle and one for T/C G2 14"barrel .357 Rem maximum. I keep reloading sub sonics for maximum and .308 Win with VihtaVuori N-32C "Tin Star" powder.
