Do you own a silencer?

Mr Husband.....G2 is very quiet. First "zing" and then "pop" when bullet makes a hole to cartdboard. I use Made in Finland Archipelago- 200gr copperpladet resitzed cast bullets. (http://www.archipelagobullets.fi). The silencer is for rifles-size, because i use it with full loads too. Then it is only for first bang, but bullet makes noise. Silencer is like muzzle brake too.
125 gr 9mm Luger bullet are like ****, making 10" groups at 100yards. You can to see; my language is like **** too. Sorry.

I don't own a silencer. I never really wanted one... so far.

I wonder if you wear very good EAR and eye protection how much more quiet it would be if you put a silencer on your firearm.

Can anyone tell me this? I am curious. Are gun shots really far more QUIET no matter what caliber you shoot like you see in the movies? Excuse my ignorance in these matters. Thank you.

Mostly answered above, but I'll add my 2 cents.

Even with ear protection on, the difference is noticeable. When I shoot mine at the local indoor range, everyone stops shooting to come over and gawk. Through the earmuffs, all you hear is a soft, low-frequency "thump" that is very distinctive. Without earmuffs, a good pistol can sounds about like a pneumatic staple gun.

Even large rifles are much quieter with a silencer. Now, keep in mind, "much quieter" is not the same as "quiet." A suppressed AR-15 still registers over 135dB, which is quite loud. But it's much quieter than an unsuppressed AR-15 at around 165dB. Remember that decibels are on a logarithmic scale - a 10dB increase means a 10x increase in sound power. So a 30dB decrease means the can removes 99.9% of the sound power from the muzzle report.

A supersonic bullet will generate its own small sonic boom which registers in the 130dB range, so without using subsonic ammo, that's about as quiet as you can get a rifle.

None. Absolutelyno need for one. In my state it's only one of the three firearms laws on the books....Essex

Yep, currently have an AAC M4-1k. Have a pending Form 4 for an FSSD .22 can. I'll be sending off the Form 1 for my SBR build shortly, with a Form 4 for a Trident sometime in the next few months.

Jax, I'm certainly up for it. I remember we discussed it a few years ago at the range but then I left for the Border Patrol and forgot all about it. May is very busy for me, getting married on the 10th, but towards the end of the month I can take any day and we can head over to Austin Rifle Club to do some testing.

Overall I'm really happy with the setup. Dry it isn't great, but wet it is pretty quiet. I prefer 1911s in general, so at some point I'll have to get a threaded barrel fit for one of those.

Conqueror, who did your threaded 1911 barrel? looks nice.

Thank you very much for the replies. I knew that it would be more quiet for other people and animals. I did not realize that even with good quality ear muffs on... there would still be a difference.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Catherine

A TAC-65 is on my list of stuff to get, but it wont be this year. I've got three stipped lowers that I need to complete (AR45 for me, AR15 for the lady, and a rimfire for us to share).

EFK Firedragon. It's a quality barrel, but my experience with the company wasn't great. They lied to me repeatedly about the status of my barrel, and it ended up taking 4 months instead of the quoted 3-4 weeks.

welcome to THR... and great news!

misuppressor, please start a new thread in the NFA section and/or activism section. this thread is 2 yrs old.
