I currently don't have any dogs. Dogs take to me for some reason. I have/had the pleasures of hunting with some fine Boykin Spaniels, Labs, Retrievers, Setters, beagles...
At one a Lab/Collie mix and a Golden Retreiver/? mix were part of the family.
Later a Cocker Spaniel with a pure pedigree longer than my truck really surprised me. Nick was purchased by my ex for her son when she went through her divorce from a family that couldn't keep due to a medical/financial hardship. Nick and I hit it off, just a pet to them, but I saw the hunting instinct, smart , intuitive, loving, hardheaded, protective. When I came into the scene--Nick forgot about them and became attached to me, minded me, did tricks--even jumped into the tub for me for a bath!! Surprised the kid and his mom--he just needed someone to appreciate his pedigree. Would actually attract my attention to reloading area and try to drag my gear out to the truck. And forget about break in--he is the one that barked at the wife until she grabbed the pistol after barking about the stranger in the yard one night while I was away. He refused to let her leave the bedroom without it.
I miss Nick, never really gave Cocker Spaniels a thought till I had one--I'd consider one again for sure.
