(Yeah this is gun related.)

My oldest son turns 16 next year and gets his license, and I decided in May that I should buy a new mustang. Figured I got one more year left before my insurance rates go up.. up.. up.. By the time he's 18, I have 4 more kids stacked behind him who'll be getting of age. So for the next 12 years... yeah you get the picture.

Anyway I traded my F250 superduty in on a brand spanking new 2012 Mustang GT. Awesome car. Everything was great with the car until today, absolutely no regrets...

Except when I went to load up my 50BMG ....

.... and it wouldn't fit in the car.

(At least, not with the pelican case. I can transport it bare, but with the glass on it, don't like the idea too much...)

Soo... "Honey, can I borrow your truck keys?"

Anyway just had to vent. Now I'm dependent on my wife's ride to haul my boat.. to go fishing.. to go shooting... which means, I'm at her mercy. Which has significant drawbacks. Because I have to ask permission.

Sigh.

Only good news is I plan on selling the car when my boy turns 16, guess I'll get another truck so I can haul my guns!!!!

I actually took my larger pelican case to the dealership when i bought my current car. The salesman looked a little :uhoh: when I "test fitted" the case into the hatchback.

Haha that's cool. I got a call from the dealership a couple weeks after the trade-in. He said "you can stop by and pick up the bag of shellcasings we pulled out of your truck whenever you want."

Occasionally I practice drawing and shooting out the window when I drive out to change targets, there was a slew of 45 and 9mm casings I'd missed in nooks and crannies when I cleaned out the truck.

Trent best to wait until all the little fellows are gone then buy the sports cars, etc, that is if any money remains sadly when mine vacated I was stripped clean.;)

I just wanted "one year of fun".

421 horsepower, 3.99% financing, and a $3250 factory rebate on the '12 was too hard to resist. Right NOW my insurance has only jumped $60 a year from what I was paying on my truck. Next year.. oh man. I'm screwed. Car will have to go. :)

Thought about driving the stang out to the range today. It *might* be too hot for anyone else to be there. If it's an empty range, I set the firing line. Which means I could pull my car out there and work on getting some new shellcasings scattered about the interior while the "max AC" button is lit up.

I don't have any knowledge of the newer mustangs but with the previous generation it was possible to flip the back seats down push stuff through from the trunk. Managed to fit my skis (190s), long rifle cases, trees, trellises, unassembled book cases and a bunch of other stuff that otherwise wouldn't have even remotely fit in the pair my dad and sister had. Did they drop that feature? Because it made them *a lot* more useful and practical as transportation.

i sold a prius a couple years ago for same reason. had a barrett m95 that wouldn't fit in it

Seats fold down but the truck opening is very narrow. Trunk itself is largish, but the opening is tiny. I *might* be able to fold the passenger seat down and cram it in through that side back there.

taliv; that's the same model Barrett that I have.

I can lay the rifle along the back seat sans-case, and transport it legally with the bolt removed. But I'm worried about the glass getting banged up if I have to hit the brakes - a real possibility since deer are so thick where I'm at right now. Since I bought the car in May I've had to emergency stop THREE times due to deer running out in front of me; last month, my neighbor hit one.. they didn't get culled enough in this area.

(That, and since I'm selling the car in a year, I don't want to risk gouging the leather seats!)

Another ex mustang owner.

You've learned a cold hard truth. Cars and motorcycles are the most useless modes of transportation men buy.

The lesson learned is a good truck in the hand is worth two cars in the bush.

When you use it to haul around a "big 50" even a minivan is more manly than a mustang

I never thought about using the damn seatbelts to strap it in!!!! {banghead}

Damn I was coming here to vent... and here someone hands me a common sense solution that'll work just fine.

Yet another reason why I love this forum. :)

I bought a Winchester hard case for my CZ varmint rifle. The rifle is 4 feet long, the case I eventually bought for it is about 5 feet long....it won't fit in the back seat of a Ford Ranger...I have to actually put it in the bed...so you might not be able to get your .50 in your back seat either

It fits!! *BARELY*

Now I gotta work up the Cojones to go shooting in 100+ weather. :(

My guns fit just fine in the trunk of my '87 Accord. And in the back seat when the trunk is occupied by my subs.

As far as shooting in that kind-a heat? Never stopped me before. Just pack some water.

Thank you sir, for the great idea.

As long as I remove the bolt while driving, it'll be legal to transport this way in Illinois. :)

(My state gun laws suck...)

i've got the first largemouth bass i ever caught mounted. i recently moved and my wife got a good laugh when she saw that i strapped it into the passenger seat with the seatbelt.

BTW, since I'm off work today I've been running an experiment in the driveway next to the mustang. This is strongly dissuading me from going shooting today.

I feel your pain. I sold my SS Camaro, mainly due to nothing fitting inside the car. Plus I had tied WAY too much money into it with cam and all supporting mods. Now I drive my Envoy, and am excited that I don't have to ask to borrow the wifes ride to go shooting.. I had the same problem, that is why I picked the Envoy. My 50 bmg fits, but I still have to lower the rear seat.

Like Snorko, I have been known to show up at the car dealer with a gun case.
Of course I am driving a van now and have no problems. But some of my friends are campaigning me to get something sporty for my second childhood.

We have a BPCR shooter who transports a big Highwall in his Mustang with the rear seat folded. But then there was the guy who showed up at a shoot with a Sharps on his motorcycle, too.

A friend of mine while on active duty as SEAL finally realized his dream through a very generous re-enlistment bonus and having recently been married (justifying a 2-car lifestyle) and popped on a brand new Corvette in the C-4 years. Oh happy day for him until... what ho?!? "None of my hard cases fit!"

Being 2-car he was fortunate enough to grab the wife's ride (nervousness ensues while she drives the 'Vette) or catch a ride with one of us.

What he did at trade-in time was take two golf bags to ensure they would fit into the C-5. Saves dragging pellicans around.

Why don't you just go buy a $500 truck.

Because I'm in debt due to a new Mustang and the cost of feeding a Barrett M95. Where you been this entire conversation? :)

Next year when the kid turns 16, I'm trading in the 2012 stang and picking up a new truck (and hopefully trailer + bass boat). Should solve my problem in a more permanent fashion.

For now though, that Barrett fits quite cozy strapped in with the seatbelts in the back seat. About 1/2" of clearance on either side! :)

You really shouldn't have just said that you have a NEW mustang, a 50 Cal, want to buy a new truck n bassboat yet don't have $500 on a public forum.

Prepare to be swarmed by a flock of Dave Ramsey's
