Car load of punks shows up at my house...

Gates can be had at: Farm Bureau's, TSC, some Home Depot's. Solar gate openers are available on line.

Hint: If you live in a region that gets lots of snow (I assume so if you are planting late June) be sure to put the gate in high enough so that it won't get locked in during regular snow. Not a bad idea to put a camera on it either. You can get a camera with a remote viewer at Sam's Club for about $100.

My relatives had a house with a long and twisty country driveway like that. They installed a similar electric eye buzzer so anyone passing the entrance would trigger a buzzer in the house.

I have a sign that says "No Trespassing...Violators will be Violated". If that does not work I have my trusty S&W 44 on my side...:D

who cares about sssssspellin grammmmmerrr rrrr MISS PERFECT!

i had my yugo 59/66 "break" on me. the firing pin shot out of the bolt while i was shooting it. after that i can not trust the gun or guns like it. but thats just me. the luck of the draw i guess. what ever works 4 u though. i prefer my .270 win overall.

Post #30 should be titled "How To Make Friends and Influence People".
Relax, DC. Leatherneck was just trying to be helpful.

If you are out around the house planting stuff anyway, Why not bring out a handgun in a plant pot? Not out of place at all, and does not look like anything unusual until they see what you have in the pot!
Sometimes the easiest and cheapest solution is right before our eyes.

Anybody who finished 5th grade?

On the subject of the SKS, the only weak spot I've heard of in the design is the firing pin, although it was concerned with getting stuck and causing full auto/uncontrolled burst fire, not breaking. I guess like every other machine, they are designed for use rather than abuse. Everything can be broken, if you work at it.

If you don't feel comfortable wearing a holster around the yard, even a little pocket mouse is better than nothing while you secure your people and fetch a more appropriate weapon.

On the rare occasions I decide to sit outside and read or goof off wearing sandals (can't ankle carry my 45LC in sandals), I put an AMT 380 Backup in the hip pocket of my 501s. It's only six rounds of 380, but it beats a kick in the crotch with a steel toed boot.

Actually I'm English, but I chose to live with this "bunch of Yanks". If they're willing to let bygones be bygones, I don't see why I wouldn't.

Someone in the office just suggested a whacky solution if you don't want a rifle in plain view while you work on the garden: a golf bag. Just wheel it out when you're outside, leave it in the closet when you're not. Fore! :)

NG, I got mine at Tractor Supply. There are all sorts of accessories for them. We got the keychain remotes for ours, and the solar panel. Also a keypad. I also wired an additional car battery to mine.

You can get a solenoid lock, but I don’t use one. If someone REALLY wants in, there’s no lock that can stop them on a gate. But I’ve discovered that a gate, properly swung shut, will deter 99.9% of all interlopers. I fear the “opportunista” that happens upon my property and decides to pillage and plunder a bit.

At my place, though, it might get tough: Someone has to make it down 900 feet of exposed driveway, brave six decent-sized dogs and then make it back up the same driveway on the way out. All of my neighbors (2) have my driveway covered with rifles, as I have theirs. No one has tried it yet…:)

And the SKS is personal preference. Sometimes my old Win 94 is out there, or my AR. Just depends on my mood... and always a sidearm.

I have just foregone the luxury of being completely "comfortable", especially when outside. I almost always have on at least a shirt, boots, and jeans with a belt and all my usual "hardware" (including a .357). Besides, when it is hot and dry then I need to be ready at a moment's notice to respond to a wildland fire page.

In many ways I feel safer living out in the country because I have more control over my environment (40 acres instead of .40 acre). But if you do have trouble then you are really own your own.

I've wanted to put up a gate on our long driveway, but my wife is opposed to that. It would be a pain to keep it closed during the daytime as we sometimes get UPS and Fedex packages. We really haven't had much trouble, other than that related to our very troublesome former neighbor. 95% of the time when somebody comes into our driveway, I will recognize the vehicle (probably 85% of the time we are expecting them anyway).

If a strange vehicle shows up, it's my general policy to go out a door on the opposite side of the house and come around the corner to "greet" them. That way the doors on the driveway side remain locked and they can't push their way in, plus I have the advantage of distance and cover if things get difficult.

Fedex and UPS learned very quickly how (and where) to leave our packages. All of our contractors (meter readers/propane company) have my cell number, and can call for entry. I change my code regularly...

BTW: Signs DO NOT WORK! I have a large "No Trespassing" sign, and folks just whiz right by it. A gate stops them every time.

i live somewhat in the country and take my dog for frequent walks out back by the river. I ALWAYS carry some form of handgun, as much for four legged critters as two (it's amazing what we run into out there). In the winter when I have a coat I tend to just drop my XD sc in the pocket. If it's shorts weather I at least drop my 642 in the front pocket. I suppose I should pick up an sp 101 or something for some more firepower for larger critters one of these days.

Navy, you should be carrying a pocket pistol at home and in the yard. Doesn't have to be a big deal, no one needs to know you're doing it. You just never know when trouble is going to come up, even out in the country- heck, especially out in the country. A lightweight J-frame Smith or a Taurus or Charter equivalent is fine for the task (my usual companion is a 642 in a DeSantis pocket holster, with a reload in a Speed Strip). We have an occasional problem with rabid critters (foxes, raccoons etc) hereabouts, and it's better to be able to keep them at bay if you can't get away from them. Chances are you won't need it, but better to have it and not need it than otherwise.

Stay safe,

The problem with the electronic eye warning systems is that deer will set them off. I use a brand that uses a hose across the drive. A car driving across the hose sends a spurt of air into the transmitter, which sends a signal to the house. It works pretty well.

My wife would also not put up with getting out of the car to open a gate. I'd love to put in a powered gate, but we do have a stream of people coming over who we want to arrive, and others who have a right to come in, such as the meter reader and the guys who maintain the utility easement.

I have my cell number posted on my gate. Anyone who wants to enter, (that doesn't have my code), calls and I give them the "contractor" code. Easy as pie. No one comes on my property without permission. Ever.:)

I have grand children in the house frequently , and have 4 gun safes, placed in key places.
I highly recommend a fanny pack holster, very handy and you can carry bug dope, sunglasses keys etc easily.
