What is your fav non-standard cartridge? Why?

By standard I mean ones you can easily find at Walmart for example...

My wildest cartridge I own is a 6.5x55. So, haven’t ever left the reservation? That and my 16 ga are my only odd ducks...

So what makes you quack and why?

Greg

I've experimented with several over the years. No longer own any of them, but 2 pretty decent cartridges that I've owned in the past were 280 and 338-06. After owning them for several years I simply concluded that neither did anything I couldn't do with my 30-06 or 308 rifles. But there is a certain cool factor to owning and hunting with such rounds. For me the decision to simplify things led to me sending them down the road. But if I were interested in hunting with a couple of good rounds that were a little eccentric those would be the 2 I'd use.

I kinda like the idea of both the 6.5X55 and 7X57. Never owned either, but when I see modern rounds like the 7-08 and 6.5 CM it is hard to not conclude that gun makers really got it right the 1st time over 100 years ago with those 2. Nothing else developed since then smaller than 375 caliber is really much better.

Nothing unusual here. I have had 6.5X55, 257 Roberts, 308 Norma and a 7mm TCU, but I don't consider them really exotic. I have listed and sold some oddballs on consignment though. 50-70 in a Ward- Burton Carbine and a 9.3X72R in a Steyr combo gun.

My favorite is 240 Wby. It's accurate, shoots flat and hits hard.
My current least favorite is 35 Whelen. A 7lb rifle and a 200 grain bullet is a faceful of scope.

Other than buying 22LR straight off of the truck during the big scare 5-7yrs ago, I haven’t bought ammo at Walmart in probably 15+ years. Most of my centerfire rifles haven’t ever tasted a factory round.

7 Valkyrie was an obscure round I had for a while which a guy REALLY had to want to shoot to undertake making brass. I also had a 22 wildcat a guy on Rugerforum.com came up with which was a shortened 218 bee case trimmed and bumped to fit into a single six cylinder. 357/44B&D mag, 243 LBC, won’t find factory ammo for these. 458 Lott ain’t gonna find that at Walmart. 7-08AI and 243AI made on Lapua Palma brass (SRP 308)...

God made brass malleable so we can make with it what we will!

It's pretty damn hard to improve on either the 6.5x55 or the 7x57.

Since wally world is your metric, that leaves out most of my calibers I use in typical rifles (223, 300 BLK, 308, 243, 6.5CM). I guess 5.7 x 28.

I've never seen 7.62x54R at a Wal-Mart. And that's the only "non-standard" chambering that I currently own. I'm just glad I bought a few spam cans of it before Mosins and their food jumped so much in price. If you look a little you can find current manufactured .308win ammo as cheap as some places are selling x54R for. That's nuts.

Like others I would have to say the 6.5x55 Swede. Include the 222 Remington, 22 Hornet, maybe the 32 long. Add .395 round ball for a 40 caliber muzzleloader. (By the way, the 22 Hornet and 222 Rem. make for fun shooting in an old Contender.)

.17 K Hornet, .22 K Hornet , .22-250 AI .243 AI , 25-06 (soon to be 25-06 AI ) , .264 Win Mag , .270 WSM, .300 Weatherby . 300 BLK , .35 remington , .358 Norma Mag . and .375 Weatherby

P.O. Ackley's Eargesplittenloudenboomer.

I don't have one. It's ridiculous. That's why it's my favorite.
