Favorite powder for 124grain 9mm

Hello all,

I got a new box of 124grain RMR FMJ RN.
I’m also interested in trying a new powder.

What are you folks using under your 124grain 9mm? I’m primarily will be shooting indoors 7-15 yards.

I like Tightgroup 4.2grains @ 1.135 with 115gr FMJ RN but so far 4-4.1 grains under the 124 didn’t seem so grand and there is not much wiggle room left. I have CFE P which I love in 40 S&W but so far I’m not sure about it in 9mm. I was thinking about either AA#5 , AA#7 , Trueblue and maybe BE86.

Guess I m just kind of curious as to what others are using.

Have a great weekend!!
Your 4.2 of TiteGroup with 124 bullets is exactly what I use. Since that powder is hard to see in a typical small caliber revolver case, 9mm and 45 ACP are far better candidates. The big bores are easier to see in the case, but I have other powder preferences for large calibers.

For a year w/ 125gr RN BlueBullet coated used mostly Ramshot Silhouette for 9MM. Meters nicely. Then I tried the TiteGroup I use with .45 ACP. It’s hotter, but I like how it shoots and its grouping.

WSF is my favorite. Works well mid to high, not a much velocity on top as some others.
Not a common choice but most people who have tried it seem to like it.

CFE-P works well for me on the higher side of it's charge range.
For max vel maybe BE86.
Actually found a pound today while out with the wife I snagged it to give it a go.

WSF is what I use in all my 9mm loads. I've used W231/HP38 in the past. But like the push recoil from the WSF over a snappy one that faster burn powders do. Now if your looking for mouse fart loads, Fast powders rule.

JIm Watson Assuming that you load 124/125's for your 9mm what is your grain load for HP 38?

I don't have much luck with copper plated bullets for accuracy, but my best load is a Hornady 124 XTP over CFE pistol. 2 MOA in a carbine at at around 1,400 fps.

I also load cross-platform with power pistol 1400fps out of my carbine.
124gr seems to be the sweet spot with my guns.

I replaced W231 with BE-86 for high end loads. However, I have been loading 124gr FN/JHP with 4.3gr of Sport Pistol for minor power factor loads and getting great results.

Sport Pistol meters like water and is extremely clean. The only downside is it is hard to find locally so I have been buying it at Powder Valley.

My first try with Sport Pistol was promising. I need to try it in more applications.

Please post your results. I'm curious if you will like it better than your usual "go-to" powders.

Should we start a thread for Sport Pistol? The BE-86 thread provided a lot of really helpful information.

JIm Watson Assuming that you load 124/125's for your 9mm what is your grain load for HP 38?

124 gr Remington FMJ + 4.4 gr HP38 = 1051 fps in SA 1911A1 Loaded
BUT
125 gr Bayou Hi Tek coated + 3.8 gr HP38 = 1054 fps in SA Loaded.

I had a few plated 125s but they apparently did not make it to the chronograph, sorry.

Hs-6 so far followed by true blue, there are so many powders that work well and some new ones on the way like win 244 and imr unequal due to hit the shelves soon

off thread, but I really like my SA 9mm 1911 Loaded, great gun.

I like the feel of WSF better than HP38, I agree it is less snappy and more of a "push" feel.

Sooo True Blue is good in 9mm? Do you have any chrono data? I have a pound waiting on me for work ups!

Start low, work up. Haven't tried any with 124/5 Gr.

Thanks! Waiting on my RMR 124gr FMJ order. That looks promising. I’ll definitely look for some 124gr data to establish a starting load.
Edit: Western lists True Blue at 4.9gr @ 895 as starting load for FMJ. Max 5.8 @1065. Looks like a fairly economical powder.

CFE P is great for me, very tight groups using Berrys 124 RN. Meters well and clean. Load them longer and see the accuracy.

Glad to hear someone likes Green Dot.
The guy I get most of my powder from has a 55 gallon drum full of powder. Not actually Green Dot but it says to load using Green Dot data.
Says he will give me a very good deal on some if I can use it.
I picked up a pound today. It's Maxam CSB-1. Found some data on this forum and elsewhere.
Some are comparing it to Universal but looks to me like it's closer to Green Dot.

I started writing this long response of how I go about deciding which powder to use based on the velocity I am looking for and maybe the type of bullet, but then realized I probably don't have enough supporting data to back up the claims I would be making. So the short answer is that for 9mm I normally load HP-38, BE-86 and Power Pistol, with Power Pistol probably the favorite since it seems easier to find an accurate load using Power Pistol.
