im sure this has been done b4 im sry and would like to be directed to the thread. but what is your favorite survival gun? what gun would you most want with u if/when tshtf? id also like to know y you woud pick that particular firearm

"Survival" and "SHTF" are two different things.

For survival (ie, lost in the woods, trying to eat) I'd take a .22LR. Lightweight, can carry lots of ammo, and plenty good for killing little critters to eat.

For SHTF, I'm thinking of killing zombies or rogue federal agents or communists or whatever. For that I'd want an AR-15 SBR for gunfighting, and a .308 bolt gun if I was fortifying somewhere.

I often think about such situations and can't decide on one so I pick 3 or 5.

I guess if I had to pick one I would pick my SKS because it is good for defense, reliable, and its accurate enough to take game out to 300 yards given I have a steady rest and the bullet performs.

Second choice would be my marlin 336 for the same reasons.

Third would be my mossberg 500.

Fourth would be some longer range gun like my Rem 700 or 7600.

And fifth would be a GP100.

For "survival" I would want a Savage 24, 22LR on top and 20 gauge on the bottom plus a few boxes of .22s, birdshot , buckshot and slugs.

Boy howdy, i love survival gun threads. If it were for survival like a plane crash in the woods (if you live through it) i would want my new haven't fired yet savage 24 in 22 mag/20gauge. I few shot shells, some solid and hollow point and some winchester rim fires for hunting small game. Most people don't seem to realise WRF was a forerunner of the 22 mag. It only reaches about 1200 fps and so gives you the option of 22 long rifle performance from a 22 mag. CCI and winchester still load it. Regular 22 LR can't be fired a 22 mag chamber. It splits.

If it was for the "SHTF" situation i would want my Marlin 94 in 357 mag. I have a lot of ammo in this caliber and would also grab a 357 revolver. Hopefully it will never come to that but you should still plan to some degree.

Of corse there is a whole lot more involved in a survival situation than a gun.

I hope a lot of people chime in here. The other SG thread seems to have died.

I hate these threads, because there are so many good guns to choose from. I pick...the one I have with me when it's time to survive!

I like the Papoose, the SA22 and the Remington 550 or anything in 22 magnum for the 'survival' role. Although a small caliber centerfire (22 Hornet, 218 Bee or 25-20/32-20) will fill the bill.

For SHTF use, ANY mil-type semi auto in ANY caliber will work...really, just pick one!

For TEOTWAWKI, a 336 in 35 Rem with loads up and down and add a flintlock and pounds of powder for backup...and a longbow to back that up.

Did I miss anything?

As much as I hate to admit it, my choice isn't going to be the nice AR, or the ultra powerful bolt action, or the semi automatic saiga shotgun lol.
Realistically, you are surviving in the bush, plane crash, lost, what-have-you, I would have to agree with the .22LR.

You can easily have a brick of ammunition, and with good shot placement plenty to eat until you get out of the sticks.

However, for holding off the 2 legged hostiles, foreign or domestic, my ar would probably do just fine.

The way I look as a survival I would want my pistol, (m&P .40) because most full size rifles are too much work to carry for every hiking and backpacking trip. Once I get lost I would rather have an SKS. I settle in the middle for one of those .22lr Henry US Survival.

Either a Glock 19 or an AR15 carbine for any location depending on how many other people were around and the situation. I think that would cover any situation except trying to shoot chipmunks or something for food. I suppose you could still try, and just pick up the pieces and put it in a stew.

If I was lost somewhere in the wilderness I'd like to have my S&W Mod 66 4''. .357 magnum if powerful enough to kill all animals I might need to hunt or defend myself against (if I'm not in Africa;)) and you can carry enough ammo. It's not like you need 1000 rounds. If you are ''lost'' that long, you're screwed anyway. And I would not want to encounter a wild boar with a .22 in this region, they are HUGE:what:

For survival i would want my fathers .22 hornet and a few boxes of ammo. Its lightweight, very accurate and decently powerful for its size.

Also i would want to have my 20ga mossberg for use on birds, buckshot/slugs for larger game and any possible attackers.

I would have to say that the .22/20 gauge combo is a very good choice.

If were between a .22 and a shotgun, I'd take the shotgun. One shot one meal. A .22 is much more likely for a miss. Good point about being able to carry a lot of ammo.

Top of the line Drilling with 12ga double over 30-06. With fitted quick disconect scope. Fitted with 22lr or mag insert plus 357 or 44 mag insert for the shot gun barrels. A 308 chamber insert for the 30-06 barrel. Very expensive but very versatile.

I hate these threads, because how the questions are posed.

Honestly, how many people have been in a survival situation?

How many have been in a survival situation where they had to use a firearm?

How many have been in so many survival situations and used a multitude of firearms and are able to compare and contrast which one is best in a survival situation?

For both purposes, the FN PS90: Light, short & manueverable, lightweight ammo, flat shooting, no muzzle flash, mild muzzle blast, negligible recoil, easy to aim/use effectively w/one hand, fully ambidextrous, 50rd mag.

Hiking in the Woods, I would most likely have either my S&W 35 22lr, Colt Woodsman 22lr, or my S&W 65.
Lost hunting, I would have my S&W 65 and either my Marlin 39M or my Marlin 1894C in 357.

Crash wilderness survival, probably just have my CCW packed in luggage (642), and a small get home bag.

SHTF, I would like to have the US Military and NATO adopt the 6.5 Grendel and I would match it with and AR of some type.

Whatever goes bang when I press the trigger with enough ammunition to see me through and it should also be easily portable.

12 gauge, the Swiss army knife of guns, until I know more about what, where, when, why and how I will be surviving.

I hike/camp a lot. And every time I pack up it is always the same hard decision....

.410 or 22lr Every time I weigh the benefits of both, and Its hard to find a true winner.

Though, for some reason 65% of the time I choose the 22lr.

1 gun that i expected to see on here and havent is the springfield m6 scout. a 22lr or 22 hornet over a 410. very versatile. has a built in ammo carry in the stock. small fairly lightweight and fairly good shooter once you get used to the trigger

Rossi 92 chambered in .357 Magnum would be my first choice. Maybe not the best for everything but will make a good show of almost any task.

Added bonus, same ammo as my Security Sixes!

SHTF/TEOTWAWKI/Complete breakdown of society type stuff:

Batten down the hatches and:

Remington and Mossberg pump shotguns (lots of em) and Rem bolt action rifles (.30-06 and .243 Win) with good glass. If you ain't in range of one you are of the other. For close in social work I've got enough Ruger .45's to go around the family too. All take the same mags.

Lost in the woods type scenario where you gotta fend for yourself/feed yourself I'd want either of the following two combos from my safe:

Ruger 10/22 with Nikon 4x32 rimfire scope and my Ruger P90, or
Ruger 22/45 and Remington 870 20" Rifle sighted IC with slugs and buckshot (and a few rounds of birdshot for hunting).
Reason for this? One for small game, other for large game or 2 legged threats, easier to pack a handgun and long gun than two long guns.

Most versatile single foraging firearm would have to be the Savage 24 series rifle shotgun combination guns with certain chamber or barrel inserts, they offer allot of versatility in one package.

Add your preferred pistol and a few carefully selected items in a kit and you have a well balanced package to better your odds.

A runner up would be a Thompson Contender with a two or three different barrels such as one in .22LR one in either .223 .30-30 or .45-70 and the one in .45Colt/410 for use with .410 shotgun shells.
