Just wanted to know your favorite gun for bumming around in the woods. Also how u carry it and what types of ammo and quantity. What threats if any are u most concerned about.

I carry a glock17 with an extra mag. Carry it in a black hawk serpa nothing but black bear or hogs and have rarely heard of encounters with them. People would have to be the biggest threat out their

For the last 50 years some type of semi auto .22. Hi Standard HD Military, Browning Challenger, Colt Woodsman.

Of late I sometimes carry a Colt Officers Model Target in .22

I'd be under gunned for several of the imagined threats but I have yet to see one. Up close anyway.

Usually my 7mm or a 12 guage depending on where I'm at and I usually have 1 in the hole 2 in the mag 9 the butstock and 4 on the sling and with my 12g I carry #4 in the hole and 5 more on the butstock but 1 or 2 of them is usually a slug

S&W 4" M19-3 in a leather OWB holster, loaded with +P handloads. And another dozen or so rounds in a wallet case. To me it's the right combination of weight and power.

A .22 auto, usually the Colt Woodsman, was what I carried for many years. Four decades, really. When what remained of America's truly wild places was a refuge from the world.

But times have changed. The threats from the natural environment (like lions, tigers and bears) have not changed. But the threat from humans, or to be more specific, the low-life element, and their invasion of the natural environment for their various illegal activities, has changed the nature and character of the potential threat. And that requires defensive thinking and defensive preparation.

So I carry my usual self defense choice that I would carry in the city. Usually concealed. But sometimes I will open carry a heavy revolver, just for fun.

When I leave the pavement, I carry either a 4" Colt King Cobra .357 or 4" Colt Anaconda .44. Either will fit in the same leather holster. Either will take care of anything on 2 or 4 legs in my neck of the woods. I don't carry any more ammo than the 6 in the chamber. The .357 is stuffed with home rolled 125 gr JHP's. The .44 is loaded with home loaded 240 cast.

My favorite woods/trail gun is a Beretta Model 70S in .22LR. Lightweight, compact, incredibly reliable, and extremely accurate, I had it hard chrome plated many years ago by Ron Mahovsky at Metalife. The gun still looks as good as the day I got it back from them.

Mossberg 12 Gauge with 24" Ported, Fully-Rifled Barrel, adjustible OEM Williams FireSights on front and rear. Saboted Slugs designed for a fully-rifled barrel. I have a sling that goes from the barrel nut swivel to a swivel on the Choate stock.

Since I always have my PF-9 on me, it doesn't really count. But if I'm just bumming around with shooting fun in mind, it would be my Browning BL-22. If it's during deer season, it's my wife's Rem m-144 pump in .35 rem. It has had the LOP shortened to 13", has a 1" Pachmayer shotgun recoil pad and a Williams firesight up front with their foolproof peep rear. The gun shoots 1-hole groups on the 30 yard pistol range. The only thing that keeps that rifle from being the absolutely best woods gun ever is that she won't let me shorten that 24" barrel to 20"...

Marlin 1894c in .357, carry it slung barrel down. Can get it into action quick, if I am walking during hunting season and see something when I am not expecting to. It is light and does not get in the way.

I carry a .444 Marlin fully loaded. I carry an extra full battery of rounds out of habit, but realistically if 6 rounds of .444 won't do it, I'd be really screwed. :what:

Oh and if it's just a sidearm, my Interarms Virginia Dragoon 7 1/2 " .44 magnum.

Glock 29. Doubletap 200 grain hardcast mixed with several Winchester 175 grain silvertips for the werewolves. :D (10MM) I run a Glock 20, 15 round mag with a mag sleeve. TruGlow TFO sites and a lonewolf barrel. She runs 100% and is extremely accurate.

Lightweight and handy.

Any one of several revolvers: three- or four-inch GP100, three-inch S&W 629, 5.5" Super Blackhawk. Typically carry OWB in a good leather holster.

When I'm bumming around in the "woods" its usually on the river fishing. These woods are actually in the middle of a mid-sized city, the terrain on both sides of the river is too rough to build on so its pretty much untouched. I carry my Springer 1911 Champion, with 1 round of CCI snakeshot in the chamber for aggressive brown water snakes or the occassional water moccassin. Then 8rds of 230gr Gold Dot for the 2-legged snakes that tend to frequent the more secluded areas within the city.

Not hunting/backpacking/fishing: Colt Magnum Carry, 158gr Hydra Shocks in a Safepacker. 2 spare speedloaders.

Hunting: Ruger Vaquero 44 Magnum with 300 grain Prvi Partizan soft points in a 1863 pattern cross draw by Trailrider Products + cartridge belt with 18 spare rounds.

I like to carry a Glock 23 as a woods carry gun with alternating FMJ and hollow points.

My 4" S&W 686 is my current trail buddy, although as soon as I find one for a reasonable price I will probably replace that on my rambles in the woods with a 2.5" S&W 66. :D

In my neck of the woods, I am most worried about feral dogs, feral hogs and feral people. Not much worry about bears, wolves or mountain lions around here. :p
