I have owned two relatively new-production Browning HiPowers; one Belgian (blued) and one Belgian/Portuguese (poly-coated). I have also owned three FEG PJK-9HP HiPower copies, all blued.
I consider the FEGs to be just as good as my Brownings in many ways, and I will never speak poorly of them.
Yes, the FEGs had tool marks in places that the Browning did not, and some of the tooling marks in non-wear areas were pretty dramatic. And yes, the FEG finish was thinner than the Belgian. On the other hand, the exposed metal on the FEGs was polished better.
More importantly to me, the FEGs held up very well to a LOT of use (10K+ rounds each) - something that I cannot say for my Belgian Browning (which loosened up the rails vertically to the point where taking up the slack in the trigger pull caused the slide to jump visibly). The FEG sears seemed harder - they had a crisper trigger (the mag safeties were pulled from all of the pistols) and they maintained that trigger pull over their lifespan better than the Brownings. They were equal in accuracy (in my hands, at least).
About the biggest nit that I had against the FEG was that the frame machine work around the upper right grip area was not quite duplicative of the Browning pattern, and I always had to work a wee bit to fit Browning grips to the FEG.
I had very good luck (100%) with parts interchangeability between the Browning and FEG pistols, with the sole issue being the right grip fitment.
If you offered me a FEG for $300, I'd take it.
