I just bought my first personal shotgun ( long over due if you ask me ). It's an H&R Pardner pump from Cabela's with the 18.5 inch barrel and bead sight. <<on a side note while I was checking out he showed me a stevens model 350 with ghost ring sights and all for only 20 dollars more , but I hadn't researched it so I just stuck with the pardner>> my question is should I be aware of anything or do anything before I shoot it? I can also shoot slugs and bird/buckshot through the same barrel right? Also feel free to add anything else of note if you think I should know about.

Thanks

Its hard to beat a Pardner for the money, shoot it and enjoy :)
Remember if you want to customize, most Remington 870 accessories will fit the Pardner accept barrels.

Make sure you give it a good cleaning before you take it out. You can shoot both birdshot and slugs through it. Just make sure you use rifled slugs.

I've had one for about 7 years now and I still love it.

Your short barrel will have an affect on shooting clay targets or similar for practice as the short barrels tend to start fast and stop fast. For your basic HD setup, however, it should work fine

Pardners are good guns. My first shotgun my parents bought me back in the late 1980's was an NEF Pardner 20ga. Took my first deer with it and I still own it.

Only issue I ever had was that the lug that the forearm attaches to sheared off about 3 or 4 years after I got it. I reattached the forearm with electrical tape. Didn't look very good but the gun was still 100% functional for the next 10-12 years before I sent it to H&R to have a new barrel added (just got an identical 20ga barrel to fix the lug problem).

Its my only 20ga and I still take it out occasionally when squirrel hunting. For the price they go for its an unbelievable value.

EDIT: Sorry, I missed that you were talking about the Pardner Pump. No experience there but I've heard good things. I do have an 870 which its based on and those are absolutely rock solid.

You may want to locktite the bead mine flew off loose after less than a few hundred rounds. I am happy with mine and took it through a SG course his year without incident. For HD purposes, I took instructors advice and changed stock to a youth donor 870 stock and find the fit much better and I'm avg. height with long arms.

I've had the same model, albeit in 20 gauge, for several years. I love mine. I paid $155 @ Wal-Mart. Worth every penny. Not great for anything in the field, but fun nonetheless.

Its the same gun as the IAC Hawk 92. Its a Norinco, some will ridicule you for buying a Chinese made gun but hopefully not on THR. But I'm currently waiting on the change jar to fill up enough so I can purchase one myself. Hope you enjoy your new gun.

Thanks for all the replies and would it be ok for elk/deer hunting if I wanted to with the shorter barrel or do I want a long barrel?

Oh so it is an actual Norinco made gun? cool, love those old AK's and hear good things of their 1911's so hopefully this is no different.
