Five arrested in dawn raids

November 28, 2003 - 12:28PM

Five men were arrested when more than 200 police swooped on 10 homes in a dawn raid in south-west Sydney today as part of the ongoing war against gun crime.

Two of the men, aged 27 and 31, have been charged with an array of offences including shooting with intent to murder, police said.

The charges relate to a drive-by shooting in Condell Park on August 27, when 68 bullets from three high-powered weapons were fired into a home. No-one was injured during the attack.

The two men are expected to face Bankstown local court today.

Police taskforce Gain - which is pursuing the gunmen behind a recent spate of killings and shootings in south-west Sydney - also arrested another three men during today's raids.

Gain commander Bob Inkster said the three other men arrested this morning were being interviewed at various western Sydney police stations, and it was expected charges may be laid later today.

A firearm was found at the home of the 27-year-old man who was arrested.

The simultaneous raids were conducted on properties in Greenacre, Condell Park, Belmore, Bankstown, Punchbowl, Hinchinbrook, Chipping Norton and Prestons.

Police involved were from Gain and taskforce Vikings, the State Protection Group, rescue squad and dog unit.

Earlier, Detective Chief Superintendent Inkster said a very small minority of criminals was behind the "unfortunate reputation" of the Arabic community in the south-western suburbs of Sydney.

"The community does not deserve this reputation. It's not an ethnic problem, it's not a religious problem, it's purely a criminal problem," he told ABC radio.
