Five guns

So finally, I'll get around to my five....at least of those I own now:

1) Sav 24: (that's a .22 rifle & .410 shotgun) (and that's one!);

2) Sav 24V (.222 Rem/20 gauge) (two!);

3) S&W Mdl 586 (.357 Mag/.38 Special)

4) 30-30 Mdl 94 lever;

5) a .22 LR handgun (can't decide between my accurized Ruger Mk II, an lovely S&W Mdl 18, a funky H&R Mdl 939 or a cool Browning 1911-22).

"Very clever", Mike" you say, " you got 6 different cartridges in the first 3 firearms, including 2 shotguns, two rifles and 2 handguns..."

I won't bore you all with my next five......

I'm surprised #4 wasn't a lever action in .44 magnum (also shoots .44 Special)

And that #5 wasn't a convertible Ruger Single Six (.22 short, long, long rifle, .22 WRF and .22 magnum)

Then your total practical cartridge capability would be 13 (14 if you reloaded .44 Russian and 16 if you reloaded both .38 Short and Long Colt)

I am curious about your next five, tho!

Hmmm, I'll play that game with what I've got in the house.

1) Ruger single-six (.22 and .22 magnum)
2) Scout M6 (.22 hornet and .410)
3) Ruger Blackhawk (.357/.38 and 9mm)
4) Puma Legacy carbine (.454 and 45 colt)
5) Benelli M1 Super 90 (12ga.)

Durn, only made it to ten calibers...

OK, I'll play. If I were limited to five guns, I would need for them to cover HD/SD, and survival situations (TEOTWAWKI, etc.). That means I'd be looking for: (1) versatility; (2) reliability; (3) ammo & parts supply. With those in mind:

1) Remington 870, 12 ga., or one of several Mossberg models -- (IMO, the 12ga may well be the most versatile chambering on the planet.)
2) .22LR long arm (Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60, or a bolt action)
3) Semi-auto rifle: AR or a Mini-14. (Though an M1A might not be a bad idea. (I'm not very well versed in the "M1 flavors," so I don't know whether M1, M1A, M1A1, M14 or other would be best here.)
4) Pistol is a tough call, but I think Warp has the right idea: "Carry-able defensive pistol in either 9x19/.40S&W/45ACP/.38spl/.357mag." Whether this is to be a semi-auto or revolver and caliber is variable, depending on the person and his or her perceived needs.
5) Bolt action rifle. Which one would depend on what I took for #3, because I like the idea of limiting number of calibers that I would need to stock.

For the record, the OP didn't ask what 5 guns you would pick if you were limited to 5 guns.

The OP asked what 5 guns everybody should have. ;)

What I think every body should have.

1- CF rifle
2- CF hand gun
3- RF rifle
4- RF hand gun
5- Shotgun

2- Kimber Custom II TLE .45acp
3- CZ 452 American .22lr w/ VXII 3-9-33efr scope
4- Ruger single six .22lr & .22mag.
5- Rem. 870 .12ga. w/3 barrel's
