Before I realized the photo must be "glossy", I created a photo at Sam's Club which has a "luster" finish which is like a shinier matte. I am going to guess this is not acceptable as a photo for my application? I have yet to send in the application.

The easiest thing to do is to just go to Walgreens (this is Florida, there's one on every corner) and get a passport photo.

It'll take you 5 minutes to get it done which is better than how long your other photo may hold up your permit process.

I had mine taken at CVS, if you don't have a Walgreens close by. It's quick, easy and you know that it will be done correctly if you use one of these services.

Better yet, apply in person at one of the seven regional offices and they take the picture, fingerprints, check your form, do the notary, and you have the permit in 5 days.

Yes, but lately the waiting list for many of the appointments is a month or more. Where mailing it gets the CWFL back in about two weeks.

To the OP, you may want to give them a call in Tallahassee and ask. As bad as the photo is on mine, I would think a crayon drawing would suffice!

What they are trying to avoid are the crappy home printer photos that people take and print out on cheap paper with ink that bleeds through and renders a horrible final picture.

Luster vs. glossy won't make a difference.

But if you really want to know, I agree with several above, just give them a call.

Wow! Turnaround has really improved since I got mine :) I sent my application in on 30 SEP 08 and received my Florida permit back in late January 09.

They did a nice job on my picture as well. Mine's almost mugshot grade and makes me look kind of like a psychopath.

That said, I found CVS has the best deal going for passport photos . I got something like 6 of them for $6.99 while I waited.

Last renewal, I sent in a new photo and when I got the license back, they used the same photo as the previous one?? I did not question them...LOL

I don't know if just making a call to any government office is possible. Try calling the DMV to ask for information. Do the CVS/Walgreens thing and be done with it. 5 minutes and another $8.

In my experience, the CWFL branch of the DOACS is very responsive, both at the regional offices and in Tallahassee - now that their staffing levels are correct.

It's supposed to be a passport photo. When I lived in Florida I got mine at a local camera store. Here we get `em at the Post Office.

Turnaround time has greatly improved. I just got mine back in May. I mailed the application on a monday, and I received my permit the following friday. That's just 11 days, four of which were in transit and two were a weekend, that's just five working days. Just make sure to go to the sherriffs office and get fingerprinted electronically.

+1 for CVS, its where I did mine, And they are glossy. Also my wife and I both got our permits back within 14 days, mine in 10, hers in 12.

I had my pictures done up at CVS, 2 for my passport, one for my application for non-resident in Maine (vacation there alot) and I've got enough to cover my FL application which I just got in the mail. Did a nice job, only look a little crazy. :)

AAA members get passport photo's free. In SC they put the picture you send them in your file, the picture on the permit is your drivers license picture.

If you go overkill with information, it speeds things up. I got mine in 1/3rd the time of my friends who applied on the same day, not sure which made the difference, but I also did the following:
sent it return reciept requested, upon assumption that the recipet is documented lets them know I know when the clock started
money order instead of a check: less chance of running into problems with it
info overkill: I included my 3 months of bills just because I changed residences recently, despite being here for years.
carboard extravaganza: made sure the envelope cannot bend at all...kept my papers and photos super-nice.

My picture looks creepy as hell...that pic gives me nightmares :p

Must be Glossy

They wil not renew or give you your CWP in florida unless its FULL GLOSS. Go to CVS they know the specs. Just tell them its for your CWP

Photos from AAA work fine.... And they're FREE if you have the deluxe memberships. Same with the notary work. I love AAA!

Any old passport photo works. I just got my non resident back. I've worked at several photo shops and retail places that will do passport photos.

First, there is hardly a difference between luster and gloss.

Second, passport photo's are not difficult, and I can guarantee you no where, other than maybe the post office, has professionals. It's done by a kid standing behind the counter paid minimum wage. You snap a picture with a digital camera, put it in the program that shrinks it to passport size, and presto. Done.

The last one I did at home with my camera and printer on glossy, It was accepted. This time I used Wallgreens for 9 dollars, "they have some set" $9 plus tax for 2 passport pictures. As long as it is in compliance with what they ask for it doesn't make a difference. Glossy paper and a 10 yr old digital worke fine. Now the camera phones are better that my digital 3.2 megapixel camera.
