What do you all think of this gun/round? I have been looking at a Five seveN and now FNH is giving away 200 rounds of ammo with each one purchased. Just thought I would ask for the general consensus before I take the plunge...

It's an interesting round but until it reaches the 12" penetration I won't be getting one.

I handled one at a gun show when they first came out. Initial impression was how LIGHT the sucker is. I think it's about the same weight as my old J-frame revolver.

It's interesting, not sure how the ballistics stack up for SD purposes though. Had some controversy when it first came out as the military/police rounds would penetrate kevlar vests and they almost banned the gun because of that. Eventually the gun grabbers were reassured the civilian rounds are standard FMJ lead core and wouldn't penetrate.

If you want an expensive gun with expensive ammo that is harder to obtain and that has the ballistics of a .22mag rifle go for it!:)

It's a very expensive way to achieve .22 Magnum performance. I don't know about these days, but a year or two ago, the ammunition was hellishly expensive. And for what? It was designed to penetrate [with ammunition YOU can't buy] a steel pot.

It just seems like a very expensive way to shoot rats at the dump... most of whom don't wear steel pots.

No thanks.

There's been a lot of discussion on the weapon and the caliber and it might be worth looking into. It's a fun gun, although ammo is a tad high. I know an FN rep who let me burn through his ammo. He liked the gun and the PS90, but didn't find any use for the cartridge.

The 5.7mm was designed to provide support troops with a round capable of limited armor penetration and with minimal recoil. As stated above, there's considerable controversy over the effectiveness of the round in people. Many will point to the United States Secret Service issuing the round and the accompanying weapons on a limited basis as proof of effectiveness. Of course, the USSS gets the full auto versions of the weapon and the LE only ammunition, so the example really doesn't apply to us.

I have the pistol.
Currently it's doing duty as a night stand gun.

5.7x28 ammo was expensive but with the rise in price of all other ammo, while 5.7x28 has dropped a couple dollars makes the round almost a bargain now.
Besides it a very inexpensive round to reload.

Being a "man stopper" isn't the most important reason I buy guns. If that was the case, a person really does only "need" a couple guns. I buy a gun because I want it.

The continuing "man stopper" argument is silly. Almost no pistol round is a guaranteed "man stopper" and only the very smallest number of shooters will ever have to personally find out.
In any case I'm pretty sure that one or two 2,000 FPS 5.7x28 FMJ bullets tumbling through someones chest will take the fight out of them.

The gun is expensive.
Personally if it was a choice between buying the FN or a Kimber, I'd buy the Kimber.
But if you have a spare $800 the FN pistol is interesting.:)

Big gun, small, expensive caliber, no real practical use. I would take one if they were free, but my money is better spent.

I wonder if the www was around when the nambu was new, would someone have asked this question about it?

I just can't see myself handicaping myself with this round for a carry or HD piece with "civilian" ammo. Sure I'd not want to be shot with it, or a 22mag rifle or a 22short for that matter. But I'd say the .45acp or the .357mag would be a much better choice for a defensive pistol, not "manstoppers" as much as some like to say, but I'd rather have a round twice as big in diameter and 5-6x heavier for defense.

If someone feels extreme high velocity in a handgun is the key to stopping power, I suppose you could load up with magsafe in a substantial caliber. Or if one feels the need for a very high capacity handgun, a Glock 17 with the plus 2 mag can hold 20 rounds also.

I'm trying to find the article but I read somewhere that FN could not get wounding information on the round because everyone shot with the round has been killed by it.

There's a LEO on a FN owners web site that said (as I recall) he hit a BG in the pelvis with one shot from his pistol. He said the BG dropped like a rock and will be crippled the rest of his life.

Having had neck surgery, and not being able to shoot any of my 40's or 357's for over 3 months now I would LOVE to have one at the moment for carry :)

Not that it matters, but it also seems to be becoming the new "it" gun for the John Woo Type shoot'em up movies.

I think that the round loses its potency when fired from a seni-auto only weapon. It was originally sold in the P90 so a user with minimal firearms training can focus their full auto fire without any muzzle rise.

I had a PS90 and subsequently sold it for a varmint gun.

Also there are sabots for the 7.62x25 that allow one to shoot .224 bullets from a handgun without the headaches of loading the annoyingly small 5.7x28 cases.

a guy in S.D. shot with atleast one round, maybe more, I will research. The guys in prison, shot by local LEO with FN ps90, but I don't think 5.7 is a particularly lethal round when compared to 40,45, 357.

Found this incident.

- Sioux Falls, South Dakota SWAT shot a subject "in the hand and arm through a solid core door". He lost two fingers off his gun hand and the bone in his arm was shattered. After passing through the door, the round began to go into tumble and struck his arm flat, powdering the bone within. AFAIK this was the first shooting with 5.7x28 where the victim survived.

i use a Five-seveN as my daily carry. there are a lot of haters out there...most of them who've never shot one.

I think they're a hoot and awesome fun, but the rounds a little "light" for preference.

I love plinking at 75 yards or so. Can't do that with any of my other pistols! An aweful lot of money in my opinion, but if you want one, who's to stop you? :D

Let's clarify a couple of points, shall we?...
The FN 57 provides .22 Magnum *rifle* ballistics out of a *pistol* length bbl.
I just bought a case of SS197 5.7 ammo for $17.37 per box of 50 delivered (how much does quality 9mm/.40/.45/.357/etc SD ammo run for a box of 50?)
I can shoot it faster & more accurately than any other handgun I've owned (YMMV) and I've read enough about real-world effectiveness that I use one for nightstand duty in my home as well...

I'd like ot have one for a fun plinker if ammo came cheaper. I'd trust 9mm fmj rounds more if we're talking self defense.
