FN Five seveN before the Ban.

I'm pretty much done buying guns. I'm all about stacking ammo and hi capacity magazines now.

However, with the AWB that's sure to come with an Obama victory, I can't help but be intrigued once again by the FN 5.7 pistol. Despite it's questionable ballistic characteristics as a defensive weapon, it's just flat out cool. Furthermore, with all of the negative press it's getting as the weapon of choice for Mexican drug cartels(calling it the cop killer), the 5.7 is destined for cult status.

I'm eager to hear your comments.

i owned two pistols (IOM and USG) and the ps90. I sell VERY few of the guns I buy, but I've parted with all three of them, despite their super-cool factor.

basically the ammo isnt very good and I seem to recall several of these guns having major malfunctions and break downs.

Look for the warning against the FiveSeven that's in the autoloader forum. Big ol' KB from a standard load, gun exploded into pieces, all that fun stuff.

After reading that, I'll never own one.

Anything other than a S&W revolver, or a wilson combat 1911 is gonna be crap to these guys .

There are those that have done ballistic tests and found that only the most exotic of 9mm MATCHES the ballistics of the 197 blue tip round.

The kaboom spoken of was because the guy was reloading for it. The 5.7 round requires precise pressure and timing or something bad could happen.

For the normal person who uses FN 197 or 195, this gun is safe and has MANY rounds through it.

If you want one, then go for it!

If you think .22magnum rifle ballistics from a pistol is super ninja, go for it. I was thinking of getting one for its novelty value, but since it doesn't appear to be reloader friendly, I'm passing.

buy up as many hi-cap mags and ammo as you can, because you can never have too many mags, and the price of ammo will keep going up.

From a handload that the loader says was loaded correctly but there is no way to verify that. It is also the only case of it having happened that I have ever heard of so...

I would like a five seven to go along with the PS90. If I only had a very limited amount of money and was only going to be able to own a couple of guns I would probably pass on the fiveseven for something else.

I like having lots of guns and a variety amongst them. I have enjoyed shooting the five seven a friend has. It is a great handgun for hunting small game. I do question the round in termd of a defensive weapon but I own other guns for that role. I will probably get one in the next little while.

I've got my 5.7 FN and I don't intend getting rid of it.


I reload for it, as I do all my guns.
There's nothing spooky about handloading that round.
Unless I see evidence to the contary I'm not believing a within limits reload did that to that gun.

Ammo is running $17.50/50 if you buy in bulk, not bad for quality handgun ammo (although I wish Wolf had come out w/their relatively inexpensive plinking ammo instead of scrapping the project). I also shoot the FN57 faster & more accurately than any other handgun and that's earned it nightstand duty in my home.
We currently have 3 PS90's & 3 FN57's in my home and enjoy what they're capable of and the ammo interchangeability (YMMV).

I don't know but the price has sure gone up. At the last gun show the only one I saw was an even $1,000.
Maybe the dealer was just trying to make a killing.
I paid $760 for mine in Nov. 05.

The bad news is the price of ammo hasn't gone down.
The good news is the price hasn't gone up. (like most all other ammo)

That kboom was not from a reload (even though the shooter was using them)but from firing out of battery according to the thread on this forum.
