Focus on the target - not the equipment. - Will Fennell

Wise words.

Will and I visited last night, and as always we both learn from each other.
I have quoted Will's words numerous times, and he has quoted me, and we both quote persons we both respect.

Focus on the target - not the equipment applies to everything we responsible firearm owners are about.

I. Freedom.

Freedom from tyranny is a target.

We the people, formed a militia, to become these United States.
Freedom from tyranny was the focus.
Those able bodied used whatever guns, knives, and equipment to fight on the battlefield.

Just as important was the role others participated in not on the battlefield.
From attending the wounded, burying the dead, cooking meals, being lookouts, providing information and communications.

It was not the gun, the knife, the bandage, the meal, if someone could read or write, or if one was able to do so.
Everyone had a role, and the target was Freedom.

We have different branches of the Military today, and while these branches razz and tease one another - the focus is Freedom.

The mortar man/woman is just as important as the sniper in a Army Unit.
The helicopter pilot is just as important as the C130 pilot in the Air Force.
The cook in the Navy is just as important as the Navy fighter pilot.

Each one uses different equipment for a common target.

II. Preserving Freedom.

To keep it - give it away.

To preserve freedom, we must give it away to younger folks, and pass on to them the focus of the target - preserving freedom.

The grandparents sharing about Freedom with grandkids as they stand on stools to see how to scramble eggs and make toast -
is just as important as someone taking someone to a legislative session where RKBA is being discussed.

That crumpled up $5 bill a kid wants to mail to a MI "so they can shoot doves too" - is just as important as the $50 someone else spends to assist someone getting a CCW, or another buying a NRA Life Membership for their kid.

III. Them

It is not about You - It is about Them.

a. It is about passing forward responsible firearm ownership to others and preserving Freedom.

When someone whom is serving in Iraq says they need a lightweight titanium pry bar for extraction purposes , or someone serving in Afghanistan lost their Spyderco Delica - It is not about you, it is about them.
It does not matter if you prefer a different pry bar, or brand of knife.

b. When you are teaching a kid to shoot, it is about them.
It does not matter if they want to shoot that .22 rifle at some tin cans , or balloons, it is about them.
It is not about you, you don't shoot. Instead you assist, parent, mentor, and pass forward.

We on this board tend to focus on tools. Tools are interesting and fun, and it's easy to get wrapped up in, enchanted by, even enthralled by fascinating discussions of the minutiae of designs, preferences and skills related to the tools.

It's the goals that matter. The goals are important. It's in service of the goals that we have the tools, use the tools and teach others about the tools.

Thank you for another gem, Steve.

Yep, we do like to wax eloquent about our latest acquisition or project. But Steve has hit the nail on the head yet again. These things are merely a means to an end, the end being making our little slice of the world a bit better than when we found it.

SM should our paths ever cross, the first round of your choice is on me.

Pass on my thanks to Mr. Fennell also.
