The Mauser C/96 Broomhandle 'Bolo' pistol has been one of my Grail guns for decades. Yesterday I went to an estate auction. There were three Broomhandles up for auction. I checked them out. The Red 9 (WWI make in 9mm for the German Army. Literally has a 9 carved into the grips and painted red so the user know to use 9mm and not 30 Mauser which was the normal caliber for the Broomhandle) was a parts gun. In good shape, but probably an arsenal rebuild. The Model 30 commercial looked as if it had been refinished in the last couple decades and the safety didn't work. The Bolo has all matching serial number parts and is in good mechanical condition. More of the finish is gone and the grips are aftermarket, but it is a genuine Mauser Bolo. I bid on it and got it. As I stated the grips are aftermarket. I'm not a wealthy man so I buy what I can afford. This one set me back about $800.00 which is a lot for me. It isn't pretty , but the pistol is in good mechanical condition. I took it apart last night (wow the engineering that went into this pistol is incredible) and everything is solid. The safety works like it's supposed to. The magazine spring is a little worn out and I'm going to replace the recoil spring and main spring as well, but I believe there will be no trouble firing it. The serial number is 55XXXX putting it in the late 1920's or early 30's at the end of the Bolo manufacturing life. I've have wanted a Mauser Broomhandle ,especially the Bolo variant, since I was literally in sixth grade (1979). It alongside the Webley Mk VI and the S&W Model 27 with the 3.5" barrel are my Grail Guns (I know I should have a Python in that list). I now have the Webley and the Mauser. Yes I plan on taking it to the range. It's a very solid and well made pistol. After all it's a Mauser.

Give me some time to get a rifle stock. But I do plan on getting one - even if it's a reproduction.

Congrats! I have always wanted one also ever since i first saw one in the movie "Joe Kidd" when i was nine years old.

Very nice. I've wanted one for a long time as well.
I do have an S/42 (mauser) 1939 Luger though.
It'll have to do until I can get a Broomhandle.

You know how I know Clint actually shot real bullets of a gun like that, at least once before that scene was filmed?

He's wearing gloves :D

The Mausers have to be the most uncomfortable, painfully recoiling pistols I've ever shot. Haven't got to a 44mag yet, and I suspect it may be only slightly worse, but for the power level of the Mauser/Tokarev cartridge, the C96 is abominable in its ergonomics.

I'll never cease to be amazed by the craftsmanship (all manually machined) it took to produce these crazy things, though, even if I still have hard time understanding exactly how the crazy things operate even after several disassembles & a lot of study :p

I've also been advised by a couple others ,today, to wear gloves when I finally take it to the range. Seems that it's at it's best when fired with the rifle stock attached. Another good reason to buy one I believe.

Such unique and beautiful pistol, congrats on your adquisición please, show us some pics of your target.

Another big fan of the Bolo version of the Mauser Broomhandle. My brother has one and like many of you here I was equally impressed by the amount of true craftsmanship that must have gone into the manufacture and assembly of these pistols. Thanks for sharing.

JC -
Congratulations. I can relate to "I buy what I can afford." The hammer , the sights , all very cool.

(BTW - your workbench is scary clean...)

Broomhandle questions:

How is it that a Clint Eastwood character carried a Mauser? Must be something about the period setting of one of his movies I don't know?

What accounts for the referenced terrible recoil of the Mauser Broomhandle? It looks like a pretty good sized chunk of iron...?

The story takes place in the early 1900's in New Mexico. In addition to the Broomhandle Robert Duvall's character carries a Savage 99 rifle. A Remington-Keene Frontier rifle and a scoped Model 1910 Ross Sporter are also used. Go to imfdb.com and search for Joe Kidd. That's where the screencapture came from of Clint firing the Mauser.

The ergonomics of the pistol are such that the grip is driven right back into your hand. From what I've been told it can be pretty painful. The rifle stock makes it more comfortable. When I actually shoot mine I'll let you know what I experience.

Back in the middle ages? 1960, I was a member of a Gun Club, on the Childwall Valley Road, Liverpool UK. At that time I owned a New Browning Hi Power, civvie model, (Story!) A Chief Special, a really crappy Star .22.

The club was in a Quonset Hut, a big one. The President asked if I wanted to shoot his Broomhandle? Sure I said. It had the big red 9 on the grips.

I carefully pressed the trigger BRRRRRRRP one round on the target, 3 through the tin roof! I left England in 1965, no idea where that Pistol went.
Yes it was highly illegal. All those Guys will be gone now, I was in my twenty's
I am 80 now. Good times. I left a GI .45 with him! Bought it for 12 shillings?

I had to go back in daylight, patch those holes with a special non drying out compound I used at work to seal holes in window frames, for sealing them after we installed TV antennas'. Just miles of farm land that way then.

That would have taken a few years off of my life. :what:
