It's arrogant for people to assume an individual who makes these kind of mistakes is in general an idiot. I know plenty of stories of guys in special ops, and military who've died in ways that don't make sense.

If you assume your too smart to make this mistake, then chances are high you aren't thinking safe.
 
One non-suicide possibility is that he was pushing a brush down the muzzle and holding the gun near the trigger guard with his other hand when his finger slipped. Of course, you're supposed to brush from the breech end of most guns, but not everyone knows that.

Still, suicide is probably the best explanation. I can't think of a gun that isn't really hard to disassemble if you're pointing it at yourself.
