I had a friend tell me a story that I felt might be timely to relaying on to others given the current crop of new model of mouse guns available.

Seems my friend had a Kahr .380 lose in the pocket of his baggy safari pants pocket. It is so small and comfortable, he picks it up with his car keys in the morning and into a pocket it goes (has a CCW permit). He told me it is really hard, if in a hurry to remember to leave it in his car in certain forbidden places.

On this occasion, he had to meet with the bank manager in her office to sign some papers and redo a checking account. When it came time to get an older check card out of his wallet, there was a big OPPS moment. Told her blah-blah, had to go to his car to get his check card. In the rush to get out of the bank with said .380, he left his car keys on the bank managers desk. Here he was, gun in pocket, with no car keys in the parking lot of the bank. He wasn't about to go back in the bank with the gun in his pocket. Also was a big concern of a camera possible mounted outside somewhere. Another problem was that he parked right in front of the door.

Stood there dumb struck, trying to figure out what the heck to do. Finally did a "is that a nail sticking in my right rear tire" look? Bending over and felt the tire up and down while slyly depositing the gun on top of the tire. Went back inside, got his keys, and went back out, checking that tire really well again, and put said .380 under the rear floor mat.

Seems he got away with it but scared the be-Jesus out of him.

Thoughts.

1) Carrying a firearm "loose in pocket" is a BAD idea. It should always be in a pocket holster that covers the trigger and prevents items from getting into the barrel or inside the trigger.

2) Depending on where (state) this took place your friend might have been making a mountain out of a molehill. Here in VA places like banks can say "no firearms allowed" but it has no force of law, the most they can do is ask you to leave and then possibly charge you with trespass if you don't exit the building.

I'm glad banks ARE NOT on the list of can not carry places in Texas. I carry in Wells Fargo all the time. The first time I did it felt really weird, but I got over that really fast.

I work for a bank. We have a Circle and Slash No Concealable Weapons Sign (but not the legally enforceable one) posted by ONE of the two entry doors. Corporate/Legal says it has to be there but there is a reason the local manager posted it where they did. We recognize that several of our customers are regularly armed and we have no intention of challenging them on that. One customer carries a .32 Kel-Tec in his right rear pocket without a holster. He has one particular pair of jeans he wears so often that the Kel-Tec has formed the equivilent of a white outlined "Skoal Ring" into his pocket. Print? Heck it PUBLISHES!

You might be surprised how many bank employees are pro 2nd Amendment.

By the way, we are more freaked out by people doing suspicious things like circling the parking lot twice then backing into a parking space with dark tinted windows and leaving the driver in the car with the car running or coming inside with cap/hoodie/sunglasses.

What states are banks actually prohibited by law? Not including the ones that choose to post signs that basically amount to a trespass charge if you ignore it.

To the OP: make sure your friend knows the state laws. Handgunlaw.us is a great place to start.

This incident took place in NC. Banks and at the US Post Office, if I recall correctly are no-nos. As I recall, he doesn't carry keys or wallet or anything else in the gun pocket. I agree though, it is best to have a weapon in an in-the-pocket type holster if kept in a pocket. Some are made of soft leather with a leather tab on the corner that catches the inside of the pocket allowing the gun to be withdrawn leaving the holster in the pocket. This type holster keeps pocket lint and dirt out of the mechanism plus hides the outline.

Great link!!

Dang, I couldn't find banks mentioned. I may have to do a bit more research before I would feel comfortable carrying into a bank though.

Hell, we can open carry in banks here in Louisiana (as I've done for several years now). I feel naked without my G21 on me...

Your buddy panicing like he did when it was obviously concealed makes me wonder what would happen if he needs to draw it under stress.

I never go into a bank without carrying. I feel nervous enough in case it gets hit with an armed robbery. I'm always at condition yellow+ when inside a bank. I'm always scoping out potential cover and watching all people entering to case them for ulterior motives.

Acting suspicious was obviously a stupid plan compared to just continuing on as if nothing was wrong.

If the bank really cared, they would have armed security, controlled access and a metal detector. Your friend acted like an idiot over NOTHING, he should have known he was carrying and just continued carrying, rather than drawing attention and leaving a weapon in an unsecure location.

He left his gun unattended on his tire, instead of (presumably) legally carrying into a bank?
:what:

Say it is illegal. What's the worst that could happen? He needs it and it saves his life. Best case? It stays in his pocket and no one is the wiser.

Here in Texas unless they have a 30.06 sign posted you can pack your roscoe in the bank (that is if you also have a CHL.)

I do this all the time. I behave myself and everyone knows me there so there is no problem (and yes the bank people know I have a CHL.)

Went home on a weekend pass after my first month of basic in the IDF. Stopped at the bank for a bit of weekend cash. Got halfway through the serpentine line and remembered the loaded M16 on my shoulder. Nobody else seemed bothered, so I decided to roll with it. I did a lot of internal nervous giggling at the time.

Was he afraid he might accidentally rob the bank? I think that's why they don't allow guns in some banks. It keeps the robbers out. They should make a no bank robbers sign. I'm a genius.

IMO leaving a loaded handgun on your car tire out of your control was a VERY BAD thing to do. That would worry me more than keeping a concealed handgun in my pocket inside the bank. No one can see a gun in his pocket but leaving a gun on a car tire is a not a good idea at all. (I want to call it very stupid but that's not permitted on this forum so I won't)

Little kids are right about tire height. + no holster. This was a no-no.

Should have went about his business.

Looks like stupid laws make an otherwise normal fellow so nervous he does something questionable. .. and yet, still nobody got robbed. "Stickem up tire! Gimme all yer pressures!"

Unacceptable Behavior!

Panic....! Panic.....! Panic....again! :uhoh:

Put firearm in non -secure location and walk away from it! :eek:

.....recap....!
* ccw permit holder :cool:
* carries firearm loose in pocket :uhoh:
* carries firearm unknowingly in a Bank :uhoh:
* panics...! :uhoh:
* makes up story to leave bank :eek:
* forgets keys :uhoh:
* panics again...! :uhoh:
* car is locked :banghead:
* panics again...! :uhoh:
* paranoia sets in (cameras) :eek:
* makes up story to hide firearm in UNSECURED location! :eek:
* walks away from said firearm :mad: (unacceptable!)

Where?....I say again where? Did he get his CCW Permit! :scrutiny:

Besides..if he was going to car to get something and secure his firearm...why not just calmly walk back to banker and say OH! need my keys...back in a sec!

Yeah, I can't believe he left a loaded handgun on top of a tire outside of his control. Then he actually told someone he did such a thing.

The Post Office and other government building are one thing but I think banks are another. Banks are private property and them not wanting handguns on their premises is a statute, not a law. All they can do is ask you to leave, you are breaking no laws from what I know. If you refuse to leave then you are trespassing but you are fine until then. Actually, leaving a loaded handgun unattended might be illegal so he was fine inside the bank and then did something illegal when he left the gun unattended in public.

Your friend a idiot. In need some proper training . If he panics like this over nothing. I question how he would act if really needed the pistol.

Alot of negativity here. At least this did happen before your friend had to use his firearm in a true SD event. That is, at least, and good thing. hopefully he will take this oppurtunity to look at a few things (like carrying loose) and make needed changes before something happens

Bank carry would not be and is not an issue in South Dakota.....and would be far preferred by nearly everyone over leaving a gun unattended sitting on your tire. This. is why those carrying to carry need to be both familiar with the laws and have enough situational awareness to realize that he/she is going somewhere carry is prohibited (or as in this case, somewhere they THINK is prohibited)
