Your question was answered more than once,
I must have missed it. "Hopefully not shot the off duty officer" does not answer the question.
Help me here.

What would you, if you were approached at close range by someone with gun in hand in a situation that clearly indicated that the criminal use of deadly force had already occurred, do to "identify" the target?

What kind of "identification" would you be seeking?

How much time would you allow for the process?

If I was in such a situation (shots fired at me and my coworkers) and a stranger was walking up to me with his gun drawn, I would take cover and try to shoot him. Having been in a very high stress situation recently I can tell you that staying alive was all I was concerned about. The off duty cop should have stayed home.
