I got my H&K G3 out to the range today:

Shot 100 rounds of Tulammo .308 Win, 150 grain FMJ type. Gun performed flawlessly, as expected. Okay, it's not a real H&K G3. This is a PTR-91 GI model that I've made numerous upgrades to so it is very close to a true milspec German H&K G3A3 battle rifle.

I love this gun! Excellent stopping power and is highly accurate. It's my main battle rifle, primary defensive long range tactical option. A joy to shoot and own. I've wanted an H&K G3 since I was a kid, and now I've got one.

Boys, sometimes dreams do come true.

Cooldill out.

just curious, but has a more awesome weapon than the HK91/G3 family of rifles ever been made?.. i dont know if its its WWII roots, the lines, the superb use of stampings, or the fact it uses a completely different operating mechanism than anything else you'll find, but they are gorgeous, and awesome rifles

I think part of the attraction (for me at least) is the smooth simple lines and uncluttered construction. The operation is different, but pretty darned simple once you look at it.

Your floor is much nicer than mine...

Love these guns. A few years ago I had one of the Century CETMEs with wood furniture. It was extremely accurate with just irons and slapping the charging handle home was fun. Flinging brass 20-ft was fun too. The gun just had a lot of character. I eventually got rid of it for an M1 Carbine in trade. It would have a hang-up ever few mags though. It needed either new rollers or a bolt. I could tell the ground down the head of the bolt.

I'm thinking about picking up a new Century CETME as the quality of the builds have gone up and reportedly stopped hacking the bolts. They use receivers and lowers direct from PTR now in their builds. Maybe some internals now too since the gun no longer will run on CETME mags, but G3 only.

Yeah I've heard the new Century C308 is a pretty good gun. Quality control has improved, or so they say.

Indeed these guns do LAUNCH the brass out! Not much of a problem since I normally run steel cased, and also don't reload. I did the math and it turns out I can buy Tulammo or Wolf .308 for cheaper than I could reload it for. This gun, to me, isn't a precision weapon... it's more like an AK-47 that fires 7.62x51mm NATO, i.e. it's a battle rifle with plenty of stopping power and can reach out to penetrate barriers and body armor if needed quite easily. I have the stock iron sights and plan to keep them because of that.

Neat rifle Cooldill. Mine appears similar to yours with the wide fore end, and the paddle mag release. I added the port buffer, a heavy stock buffer, and some other accessories. Mine is one of the JLD manufactured rifles with the tight chamber, that gags on tar sealed ammo, so for me it is pretty much a reload or don't shoot sort of situation.

I am very pleased with the accuracy I commonly get out of it. I may not have every accessory available, but I have the FeroZ24 scope, the Bundeswehr surplus night vision, the 22 LR sub caliber kit, and the "blue bullet" kit. I haven't shot it much recently, but maybe soon.

Nice looking, this usually kills people but when I turned 18 back in '85 I bought a real HK-91 for just under $600 out the door! It went with the HK-94A3 I had to have my dad buy for me a year earlier for just about the same price. I like the wide forearm stock on the 91, it really helps you keep the rifle stable. I also picked up the slimline, liked the lines of it. Plus it cut down on the bulkyness of the front end.

I've always had a great appreciation for HK weapons and was quite disgusted when they handed me an M16 in basic a month later. It was beat up, worn out and I had to keep taking it back to finally get them to work on it. After that it did better and I ended up shooting expert with it, think I missed two targets and the max was 3 or 4 before you dropped to marksman.

Just wish I never sold them but one paid for my first .50 and the other paid for the receiver of the second.

Cooldill

Great looking PTR91/HKG3 you've put together there! Like 50 Shooter I had a HK91 which I bought back in the day for a little less than what he paid for his. I eventually added the slimline forearm mainly because I liked the looks of it over the original wider version. Only problems I ever had with it were finding various accessories for it and then how much they cost when I did find them.

I had a 91 for a few years. It had the collapsable stock, ejection port buffer and tripod. Kick ass battle rifle. Fine piece of machinery. Now I have a POF 308 AR10. Piston format runs amazingly clean.

I was pretty deep into the Cetme/G3 stuff years ago, when I saw the title "G3 at the range" I was expecting target photos I guess. Here's the last one I built.

Ah another RDB thread. I too am a fan. Currentlly have a CETME and a PTR.

I went the other direction from Cooldill. He went classic, I went optics, adjustable folding stock and shorter barrel. They are great guns, reliable and accurate.

It is quite amazing how far and fast these rifles sling brass. Every time I shoot my HK91 I have to say Dayum, that is some powerful ejection.
