Hello everyone!

Well, I recently bought a PTR-91 GI model from Bud's Gun Shop new in box for a great price. If you aren't aware, this is a Heckler & Koch pattern rifle based off the G3 battle rifle. This particular version comes with green furniture pulled off original H&K G3s from German military service. Germany used the G3 from 1959-1995 as the standard infantry rifle, and still use it today to supplement the G36 in a designated marksman role.

The PTR-91 GIs come with a "navy" style polymer lower, and while this is fine, I wanted more of a G3A3 service rifle looks so bought an H&K G3 lower from a forum member here and fitted to my rifle. It now has the looks of a real rough-and-ready German H&K G3A3 battle rifle!!! I just got done shooting it for the first time, and I must say, this has got to be one of the coolest rifles I've ever owned. Very accurate, manageable recoil even with the hard-hitting 7.62x51mm cartridges, and the gun fired without a hitch. I put a total of 80 147 grain NATO rounds through it.

Well, here is a picture of my rifle:

How cool is that?? I can't wait to get it back out on the range. I plan to put either an H&K G3 original style leather sling on it, or an H&K three-point web sling, haven't decided yet and any inputs would be appreciated. I also need to get a whole mess of magazines for this baby, doesn't hurt that surplus mags in great shape can be had for less than $4.00! Oh, and I'll also be needing some more AMMO because this gun is simply to fun not to shoot it on the regular!

Thanks so much for reading my little mini review guys. I love my new "G3A3" and look forward to more shooting with it in the very near future!

Have a safe and fun 4th of July weekend! :D

I love my PTR. I'm in the process of modding it into an all around do pretty much anything rifle. going back and forth on the metal lower. I have some ideas for the Navy grip.

I know some folks dislike the roller locks, but they really work for me. Buy a bunch of mags and have fun.

Also, really consider putting the paddle mag release in. It is really nice.

A very nice-looking rifle; I'm glad you're happy with it. Is the rifle's metal finish black paint or just parkerized? It's hard to tell from the pic. That ZQI-MKE M80 is great shooting stuff for the current price.

I like it!

Did you notice how hot the gas tube gets after 80 rounds? It will mirage your front sight!

Cooldill

Very nice! Reminds me of the HK91 I had years ago once I had swapped out the original forearm for the slimline version. I also thought about getting the wood furniture just to make it look even more retro.

The web sling is the way to go. Ive had both, and the leather sling is more like a parade sling, and not near as useful.

HK basically started the tactical sling industry with their system, and I still favor theirs over most of the others.

That's a mighty fine rifle, Cooldill!

I'm another vote against the leather HK sling. I bought a unissued surplus G3 sling for my SKS about a year ago because of the easy to clip on front attachment. It even came with a plastic cap to slide over an HK flash hider. (The cap fits perfectly over an AR A2 flash hider, BTW.)

However, the sling is a bear to mount at the rear as the metal "button" on the sling has a tough time getting through the leather cutout to attach it. That in itself is not too big of a deal, once it's on it's on. The real pain is it is not a quick adjust sling at all. To move the buckle you do have to "inch" the leather through it. It takes time. It is really meant for moving it to a parade sling position and leaving it there.

The leather sling is plenty nice for retro looks and works fine if all you are going to do is set it in one position for carrying the rifle on your shoulder, though.

There is no gas tube. Its a delayed blowback system. It has no gas block/tube/rod. There is no gas hole in the barrel. Cartridge fires and inertia unlocks the bolt/cycles the action. Its a stone axe in an era of space ships. It works.

I Love mine too !!

Here is a pic of mine...ptr91 16 inch barrel .Just got the hensoldt fero Z24 scope for it... Cant wait to get it sighted in !! ordered a magpul prs 2 stock for it also... I have always wanted an HK91 ... This is the next best thing , and from my research ...just might be better than the original. Really like o.p. steel lower.

I had an HK91 back in the late 80s. It was, and still is to this day, the most accurate iron sighted rifle I have ever fired, military or otherwise. Even with those screwy issue sights it would shoot 1/2 minute of angle groups at 100 yards all day long. I could see a lot better back in those days. It ignored bullet weights, it functioned with all of them.

Stone age locking system? I think all of the other systems are stone age. I consider the roller locking system to be state of the art and as modern as it gets.

Well gang, I just ordered a leather sling, five steel magazines, and two ammo pouches for the gun.

I'm getting my patrol gear ready!! :D
