Hello all!!

Well, my PTR-91 project is done. Here it is:

20150928_164830_1.jpg

I bought a basic PTR-91 GI model a couple or three months ago, and after some decision making I set out to turn it into a bonafide H&K G3A3 copy. Here is what I did:

1. Changed standard H&K green slimline handguard to the wide-style H&K handguard.
2. Swapped factory dust cover to an H&K parkerized bayonet adapter.
3. Changed factory polymer "navy" style lower for a parkerized "clipped & pinned" legal G3 lower, with green pistol grip to match the rifle.
4. Had a paddle magazine release professionally installed by gunsmith Bill Springfield.
5. Attached an H&K 3-point tactical sling.

Lastly, I shot the gun multiple times and fixed a couple minor teething issues (most with the magazine release) and the gun now runs 100%, and has digested all ammo I've fed in it. It really like the inexpensive ZQI 7.62x51mm brass cased ammo from Wal-Mart. I've been firing this gun at my local 25 yard indoor range, this gun easily manages nickel-sized groups at that range shooting from a rest. I need to stretch this gun out soon though, there is a 300 yard rifle range nearby and I'm going to have to do some shooting there!

I also want to do some run and gun style shooting, I bought this gun as my MBR (main battle rifle) and it is not something I want to just go out and shoot under controlled situations. Instead, I really want to put it through it's paces out in the field, just how a real G3 would be used!

So far, I am truly loving this gun. It is beautiful, reliable, rugged, and has been one of my dream guns for many years now. I'm so glad I finally got this project done. Now all I need is a nice chest rig to hold spare magazines so I will really be ready for battle!

Thanks for looking guys, tell me what you think!! :D

What I think... I like it. A lot. Really curious how it shoots at 100 yards with the open sights. Especially since it's manufactured in good ole South Carolina. Times have changed.

:)

Before I fractured 6 vertebrae I used to use my PTR91 in 3 gun and 2 gun matches. It is a whole lot of fun and offers different tests of gun and shooter. The game is made by and for AR15 shooters, so the PTR is a little bit behind the curve. Shoot HM division, pump 12 gage and 45 pistol. It can be fun.

I still have like 90 of those 50 cent magazines from back in the day, sitting in a box somewhere.

Looks great and has the modifications on it that you want. Kind of reminds me of the HK 91 I use to have. I also had switched to the wider handguard to help with feeling less heat from the barrel.

sweet! good job
light weight isn't the '91s forte, IMO
tougher than an anvil OTOH ;)

Looks good. The paddle release is a great upgrade. I wish PTR sent them from the factory with it. It's a great classic Cold War era weapon for anyone's collection.

Thanks! This is my primary fighting rifle, I bought it as a workhorse. It will get used, not just sit in the safe!

Nice rifle! Ive always liked that style.

I keep thinking of buying a PTR receiver, to replace the drunken spec'd CAI cetme i have.

So, is it "done", or is it Done! I noticed you dont have a bipod hanging off of the front.

Oh, one question I wanted to ask...

Why have the paddle release installed by a "professional"?
I put one on an HK91 and I dont think it took me more than 5 minutes. Super easy install.

For no practical reason whatsoever, I've always had a thing for the G3. Never owned one yet, but have toyed with buying one several times. Yours makes me get the itch again.

Because I really don't own the tools or have a work bench or anything. I would rather have something done right the first time than me jack up the gun (which I've been known to do). ;)

It's "Done!" LOL! :D

No bipod needed. I know it's got the mount for one, but if you look at most of the ground pounders they didn't have a bipod. Besides, I don't want to add any more weight to the gun (especially the front end) because as is it weighs north of 10 lbs I'd recon. It's heavy, but hits heavy too! Like I said, this is my Main Battle Rifle and that means it has to stay mobile. It is not a stationary or semi-stationary DMR type gun. Think of it as an AK-47 on steroids in terms of philosophy of use. It's a close range heavy hitter, great at penetrating cover, and hits plenty hard all the way out to the 400 meters the diopter sight adjusts to.

Have you ever tried to hit a far away target, after exertion? Sweating, out of breath, your heart pounding....
If I had but one rifle, it would have a bipod. Just throwing that out there.

i love me the HK rifles (and their quality clones), brutally reliable, accurate, and the true sons of german WWII ingenuity

Cooldill: that's a nice looking specimen and it probably shoots great, but it looks heavy. You said it weighs more than 10lbs, is that right?
