My Little Battle Rifle

Cooldill: that's a nice looking specimen and it probably shoots great, but it looks heavy. You said it weighs more than 10lbs, is that right?
I estimate it weighs about ten pounds or a bit over with sling and magazine in place, but have not weighed it or anything. It does balance well, and is pretty handy compared to either an M1A or an FAL (with standard 21" bbl).

Cooldill, you planning on going into battle soon or just preparing for the zombie apocalypse?

My guess is that he's going to enjoy shooting the bejeezus out of his rifle and worry about why precisely never.

" This is my MAIN Battle Rifle " ??????

Battle. ??? Is this some sort of fantasy... I don't get it... By this statement , you must have other " Battle " rifles??? But this is your Main one . How many Battles have you actually been in? I am assuming, that this " is Just some sort of Fantasy "

I can see having fun with these types of rifles, building them, shooting them etc. But to say this is your main Battle rifle, suggests you think this is some sort of Game.

Yes IM old.. Been in many " real Battles" .. I'm very concerned about the John Wayne mentality of todays youth

Now if you said you built this gun as a copy of another, and said you had fun building it, and it shoots well... here are some targets at 100 Yards, etc... I see No problem..

" BUT "...... This is my Main Battle rifle .....?????? I don't get it... seems everyone else does though which only scares me even more...

ET,
Back in the 1980s a writer in a popular gun magazine (it might have been Chuck Taylor but I'm not sure) stated in an article that we needed a name for the rifles that came from the evolutionary dead end that was the 7.62x51 rifle in order to tell them apart from the rifles chambered in intermediate calibers that the firearms press was calling "assault rifles". He called them battle rifles. The name stuck. now many in our community refer to semi-auto copies of military rifles chambered in 7.62x51 battle rifles.

In the real world, there is no such thing as a battle rifle, or an assault rifle for that matter. There are rifles. The US military has M14 rifles and M16 rifles, they don't have M14 "battle" rifles and M16 "assault" rifles. I don't know of any military that draws a distinction between the two chamberings like that.

The terms are an invention of the American gun press. Nothing more. Assault rifle goes back to the German STG44 and that has been expanded to mean a select fire rifle chambered in an intermediate cartridge.

When the OP refers to his "battle" rifle, hes referring to his semi-auto copy of a 7.62x51 military rifle. Nothing more.

Yes, this is what I mean.

I built this rifle (or at least modified it) to look like a Heckler and Koch G3A3 because I have always loved that particular rifle, and H&K long guns in general. I also like to "run 'em how they were made to run" so that means run and gun and field expedient shooting etc.

But no, I have absolutely no illusions of being involved in some battle. I just was using the terminology for this particular style of rifle, it being a full-power magazine fed fighting rifle.

Nahhh, ... The Cooldill dude's just getting hisself prepped for the next 'Nam.

Plus, having more than one of the same thing demonstrates a dude's grasp of the universal principle of redundancy: 2 = 1; 1 = zippo. :D

No, I am not getting ready for the next 'Nam.

I am just wanting to own this gun because I really like HK G3s, and I like to shoot my military rifles how they were meant to be shot.

I that some kind of crime here?

Those who would criticize the way others choose to have (safe) fun with their firearms are probably the same who don't like the way Kevin Bacon wants to dance.

Was just kiddin' about your 'Nam preps ...

You've got a nice, old school 7.62 rifle that isn't an M1A clone.

In Kansas we take the threat from Zombies very seriously.

Our Governor has declared October as a Official Zombie Preparedness Month.

Cooldill is obviously a well prepared citizen.

I SALUTE YOU SIR!
