Gander Mountain now selling AR-15 type rifles and M1A's

There have been several threads here in the past cussin out Gander Mountain for not selling "assault rifles." I briefly worked at my local GM and right in the firearms department manual they said the focus was on "sporting arms" and that the stores were not to stock, or take in trade, any sort of military rifles.

Imagine my surprise today when I saw a new Bushmaster M-4ery in the case!

I asked the clerk and he said they had just started carrying those, and Springfield M1A's as well. (Btw, they've always carried Mini-14's. I guess those weren't scary enough). He said that people kept asking for AR's, and the stores kept telling corporate, and finally corporate changed it's policy.

Now, the rifle was, of course, priced to high. But, now that they are selling "assault rifles", that means they can take them in trade as well. I'm going to have to keep my eye on the used shelves for awhile.

Anyone else notice this at their GM?

We don't have Gander Mtn, but do have Bass Pro. The Bass Pro at Arundel Mills, which has always been a little skittish on handguns at all but had some revolvers, now is carrying USPs in stock

Gander Mtn.? I've seen plenty of small handguns at the nearby one: Kel-tecs, snub nose revolvers of various brands and what-not.

Sporting goods stores are for sports. Self defense and tyrrany control have never been recognized as sports.

Still, glad to see them recognizing $$$ to be made.

Gander Mountain near me [Mentor, OH] has always had some snubby revolvers and compact autos...
Ruger SP101's, 3" GP-100's, some small S&W's, Bersa Thunder series, etc.

Have seen a couple of US Mil-Surps on the trade-in racks.

Competition! With Cabelas and other stores cutting into GM's market, I'm sure they're responding to the demand for a greater variety of firearms. Now if they can also increase their handgun selection I may stop in more than I do now.

Ahhhhhhh....at 1st glance perhaps. Same with Cabelas too----when I asked their price on a Savage------Cabelas was easily >$100 over the local shops

But, they changed their tune when I walked in the other night and asked them to Fax a copy of their FFL to an out-of-state dealer for a tranfer. That very quickly got the attention of the Manager who worked up a price on my package. Lo and behold------he gave me a price that beat the other guy with room to spare

Amazing what they can do when they realize how much sales the other guy would get!!

They should be. I'd love to see a hunting season for politicians. Thins the herd.

Its probably less Cabela's and more Sportsman's Warehouse that has influenced GM in this way. I have a SW and GM both within 10 miles of my house, GM doesn't hold a candle to SW.

Not that it matters since the constitution is supposed to protect our right to a decent rifle, but AR15's ARE sporting rifles; ask anybody that varmint hunts with one or attends the matches at Camp Perry.

Yup - Bass Pro had 3 or 4 HK's, 2 SW 1911's, a few Brownings, an XD-9, a Ruger 345 and a bunch of others.


It was a VERY pleasant sight. And the prices looked fair.

Best place in town (Grand Rapids, MI) to get a CZ pistol around here too.

When I first started buying arms the local Gander Mountain didn't have any small pistols, but that all changed when Michigan got shall-issue CCW.

The local Dunham's (a sporting good store) is also carrying AR's these days. They've had WASR-10's with the mag well reemed out to take 30 round mags too for some time.

Looks like a bunch of places are "getting with the program" these days! Good to hear.

GM's used gun prices, at least here, has only been 10% or so below the same gun new.
