Girls afraid of your guns

THR is never short on its members giving their most articulated advice for any particular subject..

For real, though.. I used to spend a lot of time studying the mechanics of firearms, and as a result, there would usually be pieces of one, and some others around me at any given time.

That scared people sometimes, but once they got to know that I wasn't in it for their reasons, but instead my own, it was no big deal.

No one stole from me, though.

Did you get the number of the girl who was trying to make you feel better? Sounds like she was a better choice than the one you invited in the first place. :D

Before my wife and I were married, she calls me up one fine Saturday morning to see what I'm doing and what I had planned for the day. I told her I was loading some guns into my truck (actually a Dodge Ramcharger) to go shooting.

She asks, "to shoot what?".

I reply, "whatever. I'm going out into the Badlands" (South Dakota).

"Can I come?" she requests.

I smile, "sure, if you can be here in an hour."

She was, we went, and had a "blast" (no pun intended). We had many future adventures that summer targeting prairie dogs on a rancher's property. Well, 17 years later, we're still together, still shooting, still hunting (bigger game now;) ) , and she's even got her own collection building.

Our kids are learning the value of firearms for many different applications. Some of which I had to use them for, and hope they never will. But, you never know.

A family that shoots together, stays together. Anyone who can make an emotional decision like that about ANYTHING, without gathering facts and at least ASKING first, well, they aren't worth the time and emotional investment of a relationship. At least in my opinion. That "shooting date" I took my soon-to-be wife on was a "trial by fire", so to speak. Things were getting serious, and that was sink or swim time for me. If she hadn't been cool with shooting, or at least with me owning guns, GAME OVER. I would have walked away.

I see you spared her the "this is my rifle, this is my gun" line. Classy.

Hehe, I've actually done this. I annoyed the wife the other night by marching around the living room in my boxers holding my M1A, recreating the scene from Full Metal Jacket. I haven't done anything as dorky yet as recite the Rifleman's Creed from the movie or fix bayonets at the range ... yet.

I didn't buy my first gun (a 1911) or get into guns as a hobby [obsession according to the wife] until after I was married. She tolerates it, and has her own rifle and pistol, though I shoot that rifle way more than she does. She does enjoy going to the range every 3 or 4 weeks, so. Course, she used to complain about my going to the gym after work and wanting to go on the weekends till I switched to going during lunch and taking the weekends off.
