The Glock 19 is the archetypal utility handgun. The durability can't be beat. The trigger starts out poor, but out of the box it's better than either of the other two options here, with a consistent pull and a short reset. It's got a low bore axis, so it's a natural fast shooter. Magazines and accessories are cheap, parts aren't hard to find. Simple enough to work on yourself. It's big enough to be usable, small enough to carry easily. And to top it all off, it's not particularly expensive or difficult to replace. If you had to use it and lose it, you could walk into any self-respecting gun store and immediately buy another one exactly like it for not a lot of money.

I own and carry an M&P .40 full size..... I bought the gun because it was a "too good a deal to pass up" I was going to shoot a box of shells through it, sell it for a profit and buy "something I really wanted".....then I picked it up and held it in my hand. I have shot Glocks, held an XD, nothing compares, it's just a dream to hold, carry and shoot. It's thin, but not too thin, hold a ton of rounds, it's well balanced, empty and loaded, it conceals very well. I wish you luck in your search, you may just have to buy all 3.

I am convinced that the Glock 19 is the best combat gun ever made. The sight radius and mag capacity is equal to the 92FS and Sig P226 and the gun is still smaller overall. Repairs are DIY and the gun's reset is outstanding.

I personally rank my experiences with the 3 in question in the order of:
1. Glock 19
2. M&P
3. XD

I liked the G19 enough to buy it. I really like the M&P compact, but decided to wait until I was sure that they have resolved the mag drop problem. I didn't like the trigger construction on the XD. The XD seems more rugged than the M&P, but I didn't like the feel of the grip safety or the grip on the XD compared to the M&P. With the Hogue handall grip sleeve I have found the G19 to be the most comfortable of the 3 and have since decided that I have no need to buy either the M&P or XD. That was my experience.

my xds do all those tasks and more and i love em, i would choose the xd i have 2 and love em, they are all great choices but the xd feels best and i shoot best with it . of the three.

I finally got to play with a Smith and Wesson M&P full size 9mm, just did not like the way it felt in my hand.
I really like the XD9 Service model, feels good in my had, points well (I have an XD45 Service that shoots great). I'm really leaning toward the XD9.

I have had each one of these guns. At this point, the only one still with me is my 19. I find the point is actually great for me due to my grip and shooting style (which probably means that shootings Glocks ruined my natural point). I prefer the trigger across the board and I was turned off early on to XD due to some feeding problems in the 5in and the SC models. As for the Smith, it was nice gun, but I find I'm just a bigger fan of the Glocks. That, and I think the Glock is pretty.

I have shot all three. You can't go wrong with any of them. I prefer the M&P. To me, it has the best ergonomics, and I can shoot it faster (accurately) than any other gun I own. I think the Glock is a little more compact, which may make it better for a CCW.

SigArms Pro2340/2022

When I was looking for my first carry gun a few years ago I tried both the
G19/23, the XD, the HK and then I tried the SigPro. Fantastic! While not on the list it's the same size as the others and offers a much more comfortable shoot IMHO.

Another to look at is the Steyr M-A1. Very sweet, but I wouldn't trade my sig for it!

Xd 9

I've shot all three listed. The XD is my personal carry weapon and I've shot about 2000 rounds out of it. No ftf, no fte. Perfect operation everytime.

I know glocks are good for durability, but I'll never sell or trade my xd

I voted for the Glock because I own one and trust the brand. XD's are nice and reliable too, but they seem unjustly bulky and I don't care for the additional safeties. Can't comment on the S&W but I tend to prefer their revolvers over their semi's. They are all reputable brands so just go with what you like.

Oh yea... you forgot to put Sig's on your poll..!!??

I have a Glock 19 (have had several over the years, never failed me), but I got the wife to buy me the XD9 Service model for Christmas. I have the XD45 and loved it. Some don't like the grip safety for me it is one of the things that sold me on the XD models. I also like the grip angle and the size of the grip, just feels good in my hand. My G19 feels good, but it is just a little too short in the grip, the G17 feels great to me. I have started shooting 9mm more and more just because I have so much of it and it is so much cheaper to shoot than my 45s. I may have to get back into reloading, but just don't have the time right now. I think what ever one you choose, Glock or XD you can't go wrong, just make sure you practice all the time.
I did not put Sig on the pole as I was trying to compare like pistols, polymer. I have had just about every Sig model made and for me the Sig 229 SAS is my favorite.
