The latest poll, very encouraging. Let's hope the man runs!

Poll: Fred Thompson Tied with Hillary

Former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson would be a tough opponent for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in a presidental election, a new poll shows.

According to the first Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey involving Thompson, the actor-turned-politician-turned-actor is neck-and-neck with Clinton, leading her by a margin of 44 percent to 43 percent.

Thompson, who has not yet officially announced his candidacy, doesn't fare as well against Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. In the poll, Obama leads Thompson 49 percent to 37 percent.

Other results of the poll show:

  • 41 percent of voters have no opinion on Thompson.
  • 36 percent have a favorable opinion of Thompson.
  • 23 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Thompson.
  • Obama's favorability rating is 54 percent.
  • Obama's unfavorability rating is 36 percent.

  • Clinton's favorability rating is 50 percent.
  • Clinton's unfavorability rating is 48 percent.

In a different Rasmussen Reports poll:

  • 46 percent of voters said they would definitely vote against Clinton.
  • 37 percent said they would definitely vote against Obama.
  • 50 percent said they would definitely vote against former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
  • The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4 percentage points.

I dont know if that is good yet, it worries me about Obama - he's worse than Hilary and I hate to say it, but id rather see her as prez over him.

Still a year to go.

There's the key - Many voters either don't recognize the name, or don't know where he stands on the issues...yet.

All the media saturation that O-boy and Hillary have been enjoying - and the fact that nobody had even contemplated a Thompson candidacy three weeks ago - make Fred's performance in this poll all the more encouraging.

I agree but if he enters the race that will change!

I think a lot of people would vote for him because of his acting instead of his political positions. I like him more than the other repub's.

The only drawback to Fred Thompson is he doesn't have much hair.
It has been a long long time since we have had a hairless president.

:p ROFLMAO! :p

Sad, but true. I think he's one of the best candidates, though I'd favor Ron Paul over him. Fred Thompson does have the publicity from acting on his side, though, which gives him an edge over some of the lesser known Republicans. People like what they know. If they watch Law & Order or other things he's been in, then they'll like him regardless of his views. Most people won't even bother to find out what his views actually are.

Fred Who?

There may be many people out there who don't know him as "Fred Thompson," but once his face hits the TV screen and his voice hits the airwaves, a great many of those same people will go, "oh, THAT guy; cool!"

He definitely has the "oh, THAT guy!" factor.

All he has to do after that is "talk plain."

He knows DC, he's got enough history to be credible, but not so much that he's "soiled" by it, and he's got face recognition that will quickly become name recognition.

Go, Fred; go get 'em!

All pols are 'actors'.

I'd offer high odds that if Hillary were still in Arkansas, Wm Jefferson wouldn't be her hubby.

salty.

Personally I think a wait and see approach is prudent for a few more months.

The Dems are going to continue to be forced to the extreme left by Screamin Cindy and the other whacko Socialists who are going to drag Billary and Osama er Obama with them due to their past associations with her.

This is going to leave a large portion of the generally moderate Dems disenfranchised and looking for a sane candidate......by end of summer/fall the Dems will implode and burn out due to the early start and the fact that they are ignoring their responsibilities as elected officials by campaigning and not doing their jobs.

Ghoul-iana's skeletons are going to continue to come out of the closet like a legion of undead zhombies and he'll keep flip flopping in issues like 2A/Gun Control.

McCain has flip flopped on the 2A more times than Kerry flip flopped on all issues and is quickly becoming unelectable.

What does that leave us? I predict that we'll see a second round of candidates like Thompson enter the ring end of summer/fall just in time for the NORMAL announcements.

Come on Fred!

I'd honestly never heard of the guy and I can't remember him from the movies he was in (Red October namely) but from reading about him here I did a little digging... Man, the guys qualified.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Dalton_Thompson

Major thing I like about this guy, is he seems to say what he feels and doesn't try to pander to both sides. If you don't like his opinion on it, he doesn't much care lol

I'll consider him. The things I like about him:

1. Has a record cleaning up corruption. Watergate and Parole Board scandal.
2. Didn't foul up as senator on 2a issues.
3. Left Washington in 02.
4. Worked outside DC for much of his life.
5. Seems to have a bit of an independent streak.

Thompson will be a first in my voting lifetime: instead of voting against the Democrat canidate for POTUS,I could vote for the Republican. If he chooses to run,I will support his campaign.

What about Hannity

Has anybody heard what Sean Hannity is saying about Thompson after he dominated Hannity's online presidential election poll? It seems to me that must have been an inconvenient poll result for Hannity. He appears to me to be in love with Rudy and Newt.

I'll take Fred over ANY of the others.

Next choice Ron Paul/Tom Tancredo...about even

Actually, since he's been doing Paul Harvey's show for quite awhile lately, he's got a lot more name recognition...esp. with older voters (you know, the ones who are most likely to VOTE....)

Besides, Paul Harvey trusting him with his show (even over his own SON) is endorsement enough for me..... :D

Does Fred support the war in Iraq? Because if he does there is no chance in hell I would vote for him. I just don not consider him a viable canidate. The Republicans look like there going to be in a lot of trouble in 08.

nov 08 is very far away in political life...fred thompson...come on...just what the world needs another actor running for president...he seems to have his hands full keeping jack mccoy under control..much less congress..

i could live with hillary for 8 years if i had to...somehow we survived her worse half...Bama doesn't stand a chance..so no worry there..he is already in self destruct mode..rudy is a democrate and a liberal one at that..get with the program..

it is the cities and states that will dictate our rights from now on..and in many cities...the liberals rule..ie: san francisco, chicago, los angeles, NY..etc..these cities and others are self declared sanctuary cities, some with total gun bans and other laws that fly in the face of the BOR and the constitution..but are front loaded with socialist agenda items that could never survive a national election..

fred thompson...come on...just what the world needs another actor running for president...

You need to go read that wikipedia link. Thompson was a lawyer working in and around government. His actions were so "heroic" that a movie was made about it. They couldn't find anybody to play Thompson so asked him to try it.

So this isn't like Robin Williams running for President. Thompson was an accomplished professional who started acting as a second career. And who then became a Senator. A well respected Senator. It just seems a bit much to reduce his life experience to "actor."
