I'm toying with the idea of a Fred Thompson - Ben Stein ticket.

Wow.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Stein#Political_career

"Nixon was a peacemaker. He was a lying, conniving, covering-up peacemaker. He was not a lying, conniving drug addict like JFK, a lying, conniving war-starter like LBJ, a lying, conniving seducer like Clinton—a lying, conniving peacemaker."

Just an amusing thought... Oh, by the way, here's another amusing thought:

Hillary in 8002 !

nov 08 is very far away in political life...fred thompson...come on...just what the world needs another actor running for president...he seems to have his hands full keeping jack mccoy under control..much less congress..

i could live with hillary for 8 years if i had to...somehow we survived her worse half...Bama doesn't stand a chance..so no worry there..he is already in self destruct mode..rudy is a democrate and a liberal one at that..get with the program..

Wolf, somehow I find your statements very bizarre but I nevertheless respect them. It is hard to understand though how you can think Fred running is a foolish idea and at the same time you could live with Hilary for 8 years. Maybe if Fred or someone of his stature runs and we support him you might not have to "live with" Hilary. Just my thoughts!

For the Fred supporters here I found a new website, check it out:

Correia said it perfectly. Reagan was SUCH a terrible president.

I'm making a two-part prediction.

Thompson has said that right now, he is under obligations to finish shooting L&O this season, and filling in for Paul Harvey for a while. I'm not very Hollywood savvy, but I think that the season should wrap shooting sometime about the beginning-middle of April. Thompson will announce.

Part two: He will turn the race on its ear. For BOTH sides. So far, this is a race of carefully measured words and careful watching of reactions. Thompson has nothing to lose. He will kick in the door, call spades spades, proclaim to the entire world that the emperor is naked, and no one can do anything about it. Everyone on BOTH sides who was settling for their least-worst choice will drool all the way to the polls.

Some in my home state will vote for Romney just because he's a mormon republican who can fog a mirror. He's trying to distance himself from the fact that he cheerfully signed an assualt weapons ban in MA as governor, and supported the '94 ban as well. (I remind people Harry Reid is mormon too.) Now don't get me wrong, Romney is not at all a bad guy. I have friends who worked for him personally in the Olympic Committee, and they say nothing but good things about him. But he is just as compromised on 2A issues as McCain and Rudy.

Hannity is being careful about who he supports. He says repeatedly that all of the major republican players in the race right now are good, and he would certainly back them over Clinton, but none of them are great. He interviewed Thompson and was practically begging him to announce.

In the last month or so since Thompson has been rumored to be running, I have been watching a lot of L&O. (Yes, even more than before, which my wife doesn't appreciate.) Even in his TV quotes, I have yet to hear him compromise. I remember when I was a kid, and Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel by the Sea, and I asked my dad how he could run for office when he has said so many dirty things in his movies, and my dad told me that what actors say in their roles doesn't count, and most people understand that. But I haven't found a single situation where Thompson has compromised conservative principles on the show, even on one so tilted as L&O. If you get a chance, watch the one where he fires Serena (Elizabeth Rohm) at the end. (I can't remember the title of the episode, and it's a surprise at the end.) She gets flustered and asks, "Is it because I'm a lesbian?" He coldly replies, "No it's because your emotions took priority over your responsibilities to the office." (Or something to that effect.) Edit: apparently the episode is "Aint no Love", 12 January 2005 (Season 15, Episode 13)

I relish the opportunity to see him debate Hilary Clinton, call her a hypocritical carpet bagger to her face, and not raise his pulse or his voice when he does it. (Why is everyone so scared of her in the first place anyway?)

I think you nailed it perfectly. Fred has nothing to lose by being himself, every other (potentially electable) candidate does. Without exception, all the others continually change their positions depending on which group they are addressing, speaking with enough ambiguity to allow themselves wiggle room in case anyone catches on to their hypocrisy. (Their second amendment positions are a perfect example of this.)

Fred Thompson, on the other hand, will just be the same Fred Thompson he’s always been. Regardless of which side of the liberal-conservative philosophy you support, a candidate whose beliefs are known stands a better chance of being elected than one whose beliefs weathervane to the current poll numbers.

Funny thought - there's a video on YouTube (from the link previously listed) about Fred.

The music in the video is from the Days of Thunder movie and called "Last Note of Freedom."

Appropriate with the path our country is on. Come on Fred. We need ya!

I'd vote for a Paul Ticket first, followed by a Thompson Ticket.

I sincerely hope that Thompson makes it through the primaries, as he's the only REAL republican out there. If he doesn't I'll have lost all faith in the GOP to do the right thing (pun intended). Don't get me wrong, Paul is a fantastic gentleman and right on par to my political views and quite frankly is the shot of freedom this country so desperately needs, but the fact of the matter is that he's unelectable for many reasons.

You can't spell freedom without Fred!

Man of the People

THIS JUST IN !!

My baby, who seldom has time to e-mail me at work, just did.

Works with a bunch of hard core Democrats (and I mean hard core). They are all talking today how Fred is a "Man of the People".

I think he is the man. I told my folks two weeks ago he is the next President, and I will be correct.... maybe.

It would be wonderful watching him coming out of the rising sun, guns blazing, driving his enemies before him and hearing the wailing of their women (or men).

How bout that for a mixed image???

You Go Fred D. You go!!!! :D

Fred Thompson: Man About Town

More encouraging news folks:

That Fred Thompson really gets around!

After having lunch Monday at the Mayflower hotel restaurant with Republican Party master strategist Ed Gillespie, the actor and former Tennessee senator met for three hours that day at the same location with former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, also of Tennessee.

The back-to-back meetings underscore just how serious Thompson is about mulling a run for the presidency. And who wouldn't run after managing to place third among GOP presidential candidates without even lifting a finger? Click here to see the new USA Today/Gallup poll, which has Thompson - an undeclared potential candidate - ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and others, trailing only former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Eric Ueland, a former top aide to Frist when he was Senate majority leader, confirmed that Thompson sought Frist's guidance this week.

"Sen. Frist has been talking to lots of old friends whenever he is in town, including Sen. Thompson, whose common-sense conservative credentials are part of the national conversation Republicans are having now about the 2008 race as they examine the field and the positions of various folks ready to carry the party's banner forward to keep taxes low, bring spending under control, see continued economic growth and new jobs created, respect life and succeed in the war on terror."

A Frist confidant familiar with the meeting between Thompson and Frist said he thought Thompson was "deadly serious" about learning as much as he could from Frist, who had considered a run for president himself and who, as the former top Republican in the Senate, is a proven fundraiser and has a Rolodex full of donors' names.

The source, who asked not to be identified because he was discussing sensitive political matters, said the two former Volunteer State senators had a "good conversation" and now consider themselves "friends," despite some tension in the past when they served together in the Senate, where Thompson, a recognizable face from television and movies, naturally got more media attention that Frist, a no-name heart surgeon.

A close Thompson confidant, meanwhile, told The Sleuth that Thompson has "the luxury of sitting back and waiting" before jumping in the '08 waters. And while the former senator has been "bombarded" with requests to appear on TV shows to discuss his potential candidacy, the source said, he's going to "wait and see how things develop."

Former Tennessee GOP Sen. Howard Baker, who is urging Thompson to run, feels that with no clear frontrunner in the GOP primary field, and with Thompson's name and face recognition, he would be a viable contender, according to the Thompson confidant.

"But if we're wrong and McCain or Guiliani jumps ahead and is really rolling along, [Thompson] probably won't get in at all," the source said.

Michael Madigan , a partner at the law firm Akin Gump who served as chief counsel to Thompson in the Senate, said he didn't know about Thompson's meeting with Frist and couldn't comment on if or when Thompson might enter the presidential race.

He did, however, say that Thompson is "giving thoughtful and serious consideration" to running and that "Fred is unique in that he has both the leadership and charisma to inspire people and the intellectual goods to back it up."

Hey! It's just not Southerners and hairy-chested, rugged individualist Westerners, I'm a book-totin', teeth-cleanin' Yankee and live East of the Mississippi and I'll never vote for Obama as well.:D

What is amazing to me, other than the fact that we have already started '08 politicking (thank you, Stupid Party) is that Fab Five Freddie has the Right in all a twitter. Shows how weak the Republican lineup is.:uhoh:

I thought I was okay with math and statistics. What I see from that poll data is Obama winning the election by a strong margin. If Thompson is gaining, that's fine, but that is not how this poll is being presented here. Gingrich may be stronger than Thompson, but the poll doesn't ask if he would get votes. It asks if people would vote against him.

No you are mistaken, he did not sign a AWB in Mass, since there was one on the books since 1994. All he did was sign a rewrite of the current law, which did not restrict any more firearms. Yes he does support gun bans, and another Federal AWB. He is not pro RKBA.

Got a call from the republican party trying to raise funds-- started off with a simple question, and then basically said "So can we count on a donation from you to help us protect the country's freedoms by defeating a Hillary Clinton bid for pres?"

My response-- "if you guys can get Fred Thompson to run, you can count on funds from me." They guy on the other end completely stopped following the script, and said "Yeah, let's hope that Fred Thompson enters the race, that would be really nice!"

At this point I'd go for Thompson over Paul by a good margin. Some of Paul's views are to radical for me and I believe that would also play out in an election.
Would like to know more about Thompson, his physical condition, how he stands on 2A issues in the broad sense, feelings on immigration, medicare, etc.

I talk to people about this at work and people never know who I'm talking about. 'Who's Fred Thompson?" Soon as I tell them they get damn excited.
