Anybody have opinions about these Hornday bullets?

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=1165165907

I'm looking for a good 200yard bullet for plinking and target practice without breaking the bank. The Hornday ones have good reviews and the price is right. I know I might not have a MOA bullet, but if I could get 2 MOA or better, I'd be happy since I know this is just a budget bullet.

Powder will be H335.

I've never tried ether but I pay about the same price + gas & tax at WallyWorld for V-Max & I really like them.

I wish the local Wally would stock reloading supplies.
They've decided not to stock any guns, or reloading supplies.

I'm kinda surprised they have ammo.
But the handgun/rifle ammo is locked up under the Sporting Goods counter.
So you have to ask if they have the caliber you want.
And even that's spotty.

The other day I wanted some 45 acp & they didn't have any.

After reading the reviews on the Spire points on Midway's site and the recommendations in posts 2 and 3 I decided to buy a bunch and try them out. The price wasn't too bad and the reviews are excellent. We'll see how they perform later this fall.

Hodgdon recommends 23-25.3 grains of H335, so I'll start working up some test loads soon.

Greyling22- I already have a bunch of longdayjake's pulled bullets and they work great for cheap plinking but I was looking for something more accurate than the military surplus bullets.

Jeff,

You may want to look at the stuff I have in stock right now. I have a lot of OTM's and soft points that are probably going to be even more accurate than the hornadys.

Also, I am no longer a stricly military surplus guy. I am finally finding hunting and target shooting bullets. If it has been a while since you checked out the website make sure you go back and see all the new stuff I carry. Here is a list of all the .223 I now have in stock.

I also wanted to use this opportunity to mention that I am new to the market on these new bullets and I don't really know what price to sell them at. Please let me know if you can find them cheaper somewhere else. If so, I can usually match prices. However, I am still just a small time guy so sometimes I can't compete with the big million dollar companies but I will sure as heck try to.

My opinion is that it is a great deal. It is a .224 (good for tighter, more pressured fit), It is made by hornady (man stopping brand), and it is Boat Tail (higher speed and ft/lb).

Oh, the ones I sell are .224 as well. .223 is just what most guys refer to them as. In the past I listed stuff as .224 but I got so many calls from guys asking me if they would work for their .223 I finally gave up and changed it to .223. I think the guys that know that .224 is the correct size for shooting from a .223/5.56 automatically know that .223 means .224 when it comes to pulled bullets.

Also, BT bullets don't offer any more initial ft/lbs or speed. They may raise the BC of a bullet which may help it shoot a little flatter, but other than that there is no advantage to a boat tail FMJ in .223. To really take advantage of a high BC boat tail bullet you will have to move up to the heavy match kings. I have literally shot thousands of different .223 bullets at small game like rockchucks and ground squirrels. What I have found to be most important in getting reliable kills is the accuracy of the bullet coupled with its performance. So, if a flat base bullet is more accurate from your gun than a BT bullet and it can perform reliably at the distances you will be using it at, then it is probably going to work best for you and your gun. That said, I have shot both and use both without much difference in accuracy. I used to be a 60 grain vmax guy but now I am getting into these HP bullets to see what they can do. I am excited for next spring to try them on some rockchucks.

Which bullet and load are you using? With the ss109 bullets I can easily get a 20 shot 2 MOA group with 23 grains of AA2230. Thats with mixed brass too.

I've bought 55 grain pulled military surplus from Rocky Mountain Reloading before for a great price. Longdayjake is a great person to buy from for good prices and fine service.

I wait for the 55gr FMJ Hornady blems @ Midway USA and buy a bunch.

Also check Wideners. I think they have 55gr M193 bullets and/or SS109's right now.

I bought my 55gr fmj from Wiedner's.. I think it was IMI production at the time. I'm using AA2230 to create a M193 style load.

About to build my first 5.56 (.224) loads. There are some great prices listed here from sites I hadn't considered. I'll have to check out Pats Reloading and Rocky Mountain reloading.

Thanks for sharing!
