Gransfors Bruks, Mora, Helle &...

John, any maker from any country you want to bring to this discussion is great by me. I've learned tons here about blades from you guys -- especially you and Hso -- and am eager for more.

It's just that I started with those because my kit is mostly populated by blades by them.

Like I wrote in my OP:
Me said:
... what ever other blade maker you want to discuss.

But we start with those makers.
And yes, definitely: axes are more than welcome. So are kuks.

Re politics: just a minor rant, letting off some steam. I had just been surfing late night in a thread about 2A that got heated and closed due to some over the top political comments about a famous rock star who supported guns but in ... rock star kind of way. You know, over the top. Reading the thread just raised my blood pressure.

So, I lowered it with that comment.

I doubt anyone in here will support this blade or that one with that kind of aggression.

So, sky's the limit here. We're discussing fine useful blades, who ever makes them.

Out of curiosity, how does that Helle Nying compare to a Mora for whittling and light general use. That grip is darn pretty and looks comfortable for big hands.

Jeff

Jeff, I prefer my Nying for whittling over any Mora I own hands down. Now it may be (probably is) that I don't have the right Mora yet. The one posted upstream is on my list.

But that little 2.5" Nying with that beautiful fat grip (like fat tires on a bicycle (Surly ECR)) is just the bee's knees for getting inside.

Give me my Mora's for fire prep and general camp duties. But for whittling, I'll take the Nying.

AStone, Thanks for the quick reply. Got a birthday next month and now I know what to ask for. We have snow, ice, and gale force winds in the forecast. The image of sitting in the back yard and whittling under a spring time sun is very appealing. :D

Jeff

Jeff, that image of sitting in the backyard whittling in any season works for me.

And I'm heading back up to Maine in March. :D

I actually have a pretty nice little 'whittler' in the form of a Mora 2/0.
I'll see if I can dig up a pic -- it's not in my kit photo above (though probably should be).

It's quite tiny, thus good for details (like faces on the little wooden statuettes
I sometimes experiment with), but too small for serious whittling.
Found it.

Speaking of GB axes, I just found this large carver.

I'm barely familiar enough with my Kubben to carve a utensil.

I can only imagine what this could be used for.

Thanks for the links to the Helle knives videos. You're right, the music is nice and I like watching craftsmen showing their skill. And everyone likes the Nying model.

BTW, if you need a folding knife for carving, the Flexcut Whittlin' Jack is surprisingly good. Two blades, very sharp and they have a sufficient point to allow detail. The larger blade can even do half-assed chip carving. The blades don't lock but the hinges are rather tight. You would have to work at it to get them to close by accident.

This thread got me thinking about whittling projects to try: the 5-Minute Owl, ball-in-a cage, whimsies like that. They are of no value, often don't look like much, but are very therapeutic to do. :D

Picture of my Granfors hatchet. As my old hunting mate said when i was going to buy a axe, why buy a VW when you can have a Rolls Royce. So Granfors it was.

I don't have any Mora Knives. We do use them at work and they are seen as disposable. Not that there is anything wrong with Mora Knives.

In the photo my scandi knives. Knife on the right is my Arne Freberg. Arne, now dead, was a carpenter who made knives and hunted hares with Drevers.
That knife i carry on all my hunting trips from pheasant to moose.
Second right a half horn knife by Leif Persson who came 1st in his class at the 2015 Swedish knife making championship.
Next knife is a early Roger Bergh that i bought years ago. Roger Bergh knives sell for big money now.
The last knife i bought 35 years ago and can't remember who made it

Tools in My kit: Wetterlings Wild life axe, Mora Heavy duty Companion and Esse Izula. Cool thread .

This is great, guys. Keep 'em coming.

Too late for me to respond coherently after a long a** day,
but enjoyed reading all and seeing pics.

More tmw. ..

I have a friend with a Wetterlings large hunter that I think is every bit as good as my GB small forest.

Those hunter axes are amazing. It's that smoothed and polished poll that
breaks the connective tissue between skin and muscle.

And it's still got a sharp cutting edge.

Got a gransfor bruks hunting axe the wife keeps cutting salmon berries out of the rocks and killing the edge, she has a wildlife hatchet to. I run with Ryan weeks if I want a nice knife that's not mass marketed(can't figure out how to post a picture)
Knives are good....
