It seems to me an ar-15 is about 1200 minimum and an AK is $700. I heard a MAK-90 could've been had for $90 at one time. Is this so?

I want a black rifle or something like it, but spending that kind of money is out of the question right now.

Also are shotguns a lot? I want a pump riot; not for $300 though. Is this just what the prices are now and we're they that way for awhile?

SKS's were $90 and AK's were $150 all day long 20 years ago, but those times are long gone. M1 Carbines were $150 all day as well........should have bought one then, but I was never a big fan. I used to shoot my buddies, and they were OK.

AR's are coming down. You will be able to buy them new for $700 to $800 soon. AK's are coming back down as well.

My uncle bought chinese AK's for $200 or so in the 80's and Chinese SKS's were $60. I think 7.62x39 was $60 per 1000 and brass cased .223 was around $80 or $90 per thousand.

I've heard you could also buy AR15's at Wal-Mart

In 1985 the Dow Jones closed at 1546
Average Cost of new house $89,330.00
Average Income per year $22,100.00
Average Monthly Rent $375.00
Average Price for new car$9,005.00
1 gallon of gas $1.09
Movie Ticket $2.75
US Postage Stamp 22 cents
Bacon per pound $1.65

What's y'alls point

The first AR I built cost me around $550 but I had to have a Bushmaster lower and a CMMG upper. Now if you can find an upper it will nearly bring that much.

As for AR's at Wal-Mart, I never seen one there, just the Mini-14's. But I could be wrong, until 1993 Wal-Mart did sell handguns.

A real real Remington model 870 riot will bring 250-300, more if you local gun shop thinks more of his inventory. But most of the ones that are out there are just regular 870's that someone put a after market 18.5 inch barrel on.

I just saw a new wasr-10/63 at our local gun shop for $475 with all the accessories. Definitely not the bargain of the century, but given the way things have been recently this price doesn't seem too bad.

The only AKs that were ever $150 where I shopped were the converted single-stack Romanians (aka WASRs). The real AKS - Norks and Maadis and such - were all twice that price, even ten/fifteen years ago when gasoline was $1.50/gallon.

I paid $79 each for an SKS and a Swedish Mauser, but they didn't go up over night.

Yes, they've increased substantially recently, but the bulk of the increases took many years.

The strenght of the American dollar has fallen. The demand for firearms has only grown, and while it is tapering off i've noticed more and more folks getting into it. Had an optometrist who took my First Steps Pistol course, and went with me to my FFL guy (FFL guy won't sell to my students unless I'm there, he don't like dealing with strangers), and the FFL guy still had a few AKs lying around for $550 a piece (back in March), and the optometrist went and bought three of them for $520 a piece. Mind you these were old hand Romanian WASRs that were only $400 a year and half prior. When I asked the kindly 43 year old man why he bought them he replied "want them before they get made illega." I'm sticking with my homebuilds and parts projects for AKs, did a Romy G for less than $350 without an FFL transferable receiver but it's staying in my private collection so I don't care.

Plus raw material costs are up a great deal higher as we go into competition with China, buying all those cheap Chinese goods has helped drive China's ability to compete for resource consumption. Ten years ago China couldn't compete for resource consumption like they do today.

And for a second, let us be real. Depending on where you live, if you live where there is either a defunct or corrupt culture of gun store owners, you are going to risk getting ripped off. I love going to my FFL guy and comparing prices between those I find in the gunshops, there is generally between $100-$300 in savings, sometimes as much as $500 in ARs.

Plus there are more middle men and speculators in the gun market now than there were in the past. If you are paying more now, you are likely paying for those extra middle men to have jobs.

I meant what were prices like before the recent run up. If i wait and prices go back down to what they were; could a riot shotgun be had for like $100? If so, I'd rather just wait.

Man I should have been an optometrist . . . 4 ARs . . .

I don't know of any pump SG that would fetch $100 NIB; pre-election or otherwise. The least expensive H&R single shot, break open SG sells for $100+ on a good day. Look through some pawn shops for a used 870. Members here often find these gems for a tad over the $100 mark ($120-ish), and I mean often.

A good shotgun will never be $100. While you might, MIGHT, find one for that price the old saying is you get what you pay for. I paid over $400 for my Mossberg 590 back in 1999. The prices you want are long gone and will never return. Save your money and buy what you want. It will be all the sweeter after saving for a year to get exactly what you want. Good "tacticool" rifles, or EBRs, have been around $1000 since before the election and will most likely never dip below it again. You can find decent deals on mil surp rifles like the K98 and Mosins all day long. But a 65 year old bolt action is no AR 15.

nor would I want to buy one.

I did see an 870 express with a smooth bore slug barrel for $189.00 that wasn't too used. Deals are out there, one just has to look and have cash at the right time.

I guess I'll have to make due with my SKS for awhile. At least it's Romanian and nice.

$1000 for an AR? They're only $200 more than what they were? That's crazy to spend that kind of money . . .
