I recently got a Ruger Single Seven with 3 3/4" barrel and I'm looking to get a good holster and belt for it. As I'm going through the research I came across a question I hadn't considered; should I get a belt for my pants and put the holster on it, or a belt like the old cowboys wore that didn't hold their pants up?

How common is it among holster/belt buyers these days to buy a belt that doesn't go through the loops, essentially meaning you are wearing two belts?

Just my $0.02 but I'd go with a the widest bona fide gunbelt (NOT a heavy leather "work" belt.) you can fit through the belt loops on the pants you wear most. Wearing an actual gunbelt makes a world of difference. Be sure you match the belt to the belt loops as well as the belt slots on the holster. Haven't seen anyone other than uniformed LEO's wearing a separate belt for carry. However, if that works for you, go with it.

Not very common unless you are wearing this for "field" use.

The most common gun belt width is 1.5". Most concealment holsters have belt loops designed for the 1.5" gun belt.

Noticing that you have a Ruger Single Seven, perhaps this isn't for concealed carry. If not, then you could probably do whatever you want - get a cowboy rig, competition rig - just about whatever you want.

I've been using a High Noon Rock Steady gunbelt for years, never looked back. Best thing ever.
Do you want to carry Old West style, or just for practical use? Practical, regular belt holster. Slung down low, pistolero style, then look for the cowboy gunbelts.

As I live in God's Country, Florida, I am armed every day. Going on a plane, same belt, just no pistol, or spare mag. So my frequent flyer belt, 1.5 inches, from the Wilderness Store goes through the loops on my pants.
They are not cheap but last forever. Instead of a belt buckle, made of metal, two plastic rings.

Does not need taking off for going through the Xray. The Instructor model is really stiff.

I just whipped mine off to show you.
Uncle Mike's (can't remember the name) gun belt.
It is infinite adjustment with no holes. Just cinch it up as tight as you want. As you can see there is a stiffened in the hip area where you carry your holster.
I usually carry iwb. I like this belt because you can adjust for comfort whether you are carrying or not. If you have to take your holster off and leave it in the car, a quick tug tightens things up.
The buckle also doubles as an emergency safety line attachment.

I use the same one Armored Farmer uses, and I have Midway's competition rig for hunt /outdoor Open Carry. I sometimes use the liner belt for the competition belt as an IWB belt for my Bodyguard 38, as it weighs next to nothing.

I daily carry a BH 4.625 in a Simply Rugged Cattleman holster using either a 1.5" or 1.75" gun belt [depending on the pants] thru my pants loops. It works very well and is comfortable.

I use my pants belts I use everyday,I ware wide belt anyway so it's not a problem with me using it with my holsters. Now I am thinking about buying a black and brown belt for my holsters, just never gotten around to doing it.
