Guns you love, but thought you’d hate

Hi All:

I’ve been surprised recently by some acquisitions that I was skeptical about at the time of purchase, but have since won me over. Here’s my list and the stories behind them:

Walther PPK stainless (newest model, Ft. Smith): my son was slow to take to the shooting sports, but now at 16, he’s all-in. A few months ago, we were perusing the handgun counter at the LGS and his teenage eye sparkled as it set upon that iconic shape under the glass. I had had a PPK years ago (Interarms) and, while I admired its good looks, it was uncomfortable to shoot and the skimpy sights made it hard to hit with. I sold it and never really wanted another. Well, my son was having none of his Dad’s wisdom and really, really wanted me to get it. Ok, ok, I bought it along with 3-4 different brands of FMJ ammo. We took it to the range and set our targets and plates out at 15 yards. I had to admit that this iteration of PPK sat better in my hand than the one from 20 years ago; the extended beavertail and pinkie extension magazine made enough of a difference I guess. Let me tell you, the thing can just plain shoot. It’s been completely reliable with ball and JHP ammo, it shoots right to the sights at 15 yards, and it looks damn hot. I’ll never carry it (SIG P365 9mm is way better) and it’s not really a range gun per se, but man is it fun and my son loves it. Keeper!

L.W.R.C. R.E.P.R 7.62x51mm NATO. Mine has the 20” heavy stainless barrel from Proof Research. This was an expensive impulse buy. I was in a store I don’t normally frequent and wasn’t really in the market for an AR-10. Well, I got talking to the owner and, good salesman that he was, he brought down the “Reaper” and really talked up its accuracy and reliability. He just kept singing its praises and bringing the price down by $100, then $200, then $400… well, crap, I bought it. Getting it home I thought, “What the Hell am I going to do with this thing? It’s a P I G pig, it’s about a mile long and now I’m going to have to spend serious money on glass, too. I just kinda figured I’d end up selling it and getting my money back since it was such a good deal. Well, it worked on my conscience a little bit and I decided to scope it up (Burris XTR 3-15x, a good, undervalued scope IMO) and try it out. Off to the range I went with this crew-served weapon, along with some FGMM 175 grain fodder. 7 sighing-in shots had me centered at 100 yards so I turned to the 200 yard target. Katie, bar the door. I laid 5 shots into a little less than 1.25”. Since then I’ve done better, and I’ve done worse, but I know this rifle is a 1/2 MOA gun all day long. Unbelievable.

FN SCAR 17S 7.62x51mm NATO. Similar to the above, I didn’t really want this rifle. I already had a Daniel Defense DD5 AR-10, and M1A loaded, and I had just gotten the R.E.P.R. I had read for years about the SCAR but thought they’d been overhyped. But there I was, at the LGS again, handling a gun I didn’t like, want nor need at all. It felt clumsy and tall. The rails on the forearm were like cheese graters on my hands. The UGG boot stock looked comical. Then there was the price, steeeeep. And no glass. Buuuut, this particular one was $800 off list, brand new. And the non-reciprocating charging handle version… looking better. What the Hell, I went for it. Then I got a deal on a used but LNIB Trijicon TA11 ACOG to put on it. Nice package. At the range, it all came together… the rifle was light, shouldered beautifully, recoiled mildly (truly amazingly light recoil) and Holy-Hell did it shoot! Even el-cheapo M80 surplus ball has never failed to function or throw a group larger than 2”. FGMM, if I splurge on it, will hand right around 1MOA. Absolutely stellar rifle. Not overhyped. Does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Love it!

What’re your stories?

Thanks!

My Ruger American Rimfire shoots annoyingly far to the left. Like, so far to the left that you have to kick the rear sight over about as far as it will go and it looks aesthetically very annoying. Hate that.

But it shoots stupid well, so I love it. I put a scope on it and now I don't have to think about it as much. :)

Glock 26. Short, fat pig nose gun. But works great with a 12 round mag and uses my 15 and 17 rounders too. Shoots surprisingly well for a sub compact. I’m a 26 fan.

The AR. I thought they were weird looking, unreliable, and fragile. However, mine have worked great, aren’t fragile, and I shoot them pretty well too. And the looks grew on me. A pretty good general purpose and defensive rig in my view.

The 1911. Yep. I once thought they were antiquated, unreliable, and obsolete holdovers of a bygone era. And then I shot one. Then got one. Then another. A good one is reliable, they haven’t proven difficult to maintain, the trigger is really nice, and they make me smile with every trigger press. Y’all may hate em. Fine by me. Just means there’s more out there for me to find!

I was a late adopter of the AR and .223 cartridge and now have, well, uh, several....
All have proven reliable, easy on the shoulder and wallet. Most are stupid accurate.

I used to think Dan Wesson revolvers were ugly, but turns out they shoot damn well.

Plastic guns- I still hate them, but love to carry them.

I never liked Glocks due to the finger grooves than never fit my hands. But I enjoy shooting my Gen 5 G19 and G44.

Two ugly ducklings that surprised me are my 40 S&W Hi-Point carbine and my old Romanian M69 22 trainer. Both are ugly and crudely made but both function reliably and are accurate to boot.

I was introduced to the M16A1 at 17 years old and hated it for the first couple of range trips. I was so use to the triggers on my hunting rifles that it took some time to get use to the M16 trigger. But once I got use to the trigger I had no problems qualifying expert with the M16A1 and M16A2.

+1 on the M69, a real diamond in the rough.

AR-15, and there's a story behind it.
Way back in the early 80s, my JROTC outfit traveled to a local US Army base, and one thing they let us do was fire the M-16 A1. Yes, A1s. While the rifle was easy to handle, the SPRRRROOOOINNNNGGGG in my ear through the muffs from the buffer spring was VERY annoying. So, I decided, nope I will stick with others, and went through Mini-14s, (inaccurate), AKs, vz-58s, and others. A few years ago another firearm forum did a giveaway for AR lowers, and long story short, I ended up with two free CAV Arms lowers I wasn't really looking for. Donated parts, some purchased part, (I was really broke), and I ended up with two functional AR15 rifles, one for me and one for the now ex. One of the donated items was a flat wire buffer spring, and when I fired it, well, well, there was no SPROING! Nothing! And I discovered it was accurate, reliable and a great deal of fun. I like it enough that I started loading 5.56mm ammo. I didn't buy ten of them, but what I had/have are fine for now. Maybe an AR-10 is in my future. ;)

Several years back, the 9mm HS2000 - predecessor to the Springfield XD - showed up in stores. It was so inexpensive that I thought, I'll try anything for that price. I didn't expect much but it turned out to be a pretty nice pistol. Same thing with the Caniks. Bought one because why not. And the Tisas 45s too. Both turned out well.

Is has been and currently is being discussed I hated Glock ergonomics, the 2x4 grip not the angle. Didn't hate Glocks just the grip. I just recently bought a police trade in 23 stupid cheap (with an extra mag), ground on the grip and trigger guard and now I like it. Not love it but definitely like it. Considering flatening the rear "hump". This may cause some consternation which I can't help but it's still not going to replace my beloved G2c, G3c and soon to be in my possession G3B.
I do have one I thought I'd love but hated as soon as I picked it up from my LGS and that is my Kel Tec P17. That grip is literally akin to a 1x3 and that's not an exageration.

Mine is also a Ruger American in 30-06. That butt ugly Tupperware stock was an assault on my sensibilities. Once I shot it , it quickly became a favorite. With handloads Hornady 180 grain SST bullets it will shoot 1/2 MOA. I had the stock hydro dipped in a burlwood pattern and walls instant favorite.

I swore that I would never purchase a Glock... .
I didn't go that far about my first one, a Gen1 G17, but I was fairly unappreciative towards it for quite some time. I liked the innovative and futuristic aspect of the gun itself (that being the lightweight polymer frame), it's just that it was so plain looking and the trigger was so different, especially compared to something like a Browning Hi-Power or a Colt 1911, that I gave my Glock the cold shoulder for a number of years.

Then one day, prior to packing up for a range trip, I decided to give the G17 a bit of a workout. I was surprised at first at how well the gun actually did with nary a bobble with all different kinds of ammo and capable of some decent accuracy. So I'm still not a fan of the grip angle and it's overall size and shape but I can appreciate the design features so much more now that I bought a G43X and G48; mainly because they fit so well in my hand!

For me it was Black Powder in general. My BIL introduced me to it. When he drove 2 hrs to meet a guy to buy his lefty Lyman Deetstalker I thought he was crazy wanting a "musket". Real quick like though being able to experiment with both projectile and propellant to achieve a giant kaboom. One that makes a big hole where you are aiming, when done just right. Suddenly seemed more fun than firing round after round of mass produced stuff, that looks like the ammo everyone else shoots, in the rifle everyone else shoots. I've always enjoyed history too so it goes together well

You sound just like my old man. He ground down and spray painted the grips on a Taurus PT 92 before he decided it was to his liking

I may have grown up military but when I was in the Navy I was a civilian in a Navy uniform....... Why do I bring that up? Concept: Make you fit it, military and police, make it fit you, civilian..........
