Anyone own an H&R Pardner Protector? All the reviews I've seen claim it's an excellent home defense shotgun and moderatley priced in the $200.00 range.

Only downside I know of is a lack of easy access to spare barrels. Many 870 accessories will fit them with no problems.

I like 'em, so far. In another 40 years or so I'll know if they really are as good as the originals. If I last another 40 years... :D

They're fine for budget home-defense. Everything except for the barrel will swap with a Remington 870. Even a 870 barrel will work if you use an adapter. You're gonna have to look that one up yourself due to liability issues.

BTW, the NEF Pardner Protector is way better than a 870 Express. WAY better.

Its a great shotgun. I use a 12ga camo version as my main waterfowl gun. Its been severely abused (used to break ice and even used as an oar when the motor broke down) and it still goes boom....every time. I bought a brand new rifled slug barrel at Gander Mountain for $60 when they were on sale. I actually recommend it over the Express model.

I have one and i like it alot. I paid 159$ at walmart for it, and its probably the best sub 200$ brand new shotgun ive used.

Zero problems with mine and I love it! Several friends and family that have shot mine went and bought their own.

I've read a lot of great reviews about it. A local gun store here sells them for $200.00 OTD. H&R/New England makes excellent single shot rifles in fact I have an H&R Handi Rifle .223 and it's very accurate and reliable, but I've never owned one of their pump shotguns. With all the great reviews I've been seeing it looks like I'm gonna go ahead and buy a Pardner Protector. Thanks everyone for your comments! :):):)

I don't think you'll regret buying it. They seem to be very solidly made shotguns, given my experience with them so far.

I like the factory five shot magazine (+1 in the chamber when fully loaded) and the factory 13 3/4" LOP stock and field length (9") forearm. There's plenty of room on the magazine tube for a Streamlight 69908 magazine tube rail mount for a detachable weaponlight. Though this particular model is ostensibly made for the Mossberg 500, it fits just fine on the Pardner too, and there's a TLR-1 LED light on order to put on it. I plan on putting on a 4-shot Sidesaddle (also on order) and a simple carrying strap on QD sling swivels. I have been thinking about adding an epoxied-on XS Big Dot tritium front bead as well. I have one of those on an 870 already, and really like it. I can't think of anything else a defensive shotgun needs, except good ammo and a trained and practiced owner.

I had no idea this thing existed until this thread. My wife has been asking for a pump 12ga.. This might be the one.

I went to Dunham's Sports today looking for an H&R Pardner Protector and surprisingly they had 4 in stock. The price on it was $189.95, but Dunham's had all shotguns on sale for $25.00 off, that brought the price down to $164.95, I thought that was cool so I asked to see one. I had heard they had some weight to them, somewhat heavy and they are. But it seemed like a very well made shotgun.

They also had a Savage model 350 tactical and I asked to see it. Price was $299.95, on sale for $274.95. I really liked the ghost ring sight it had, but like the H&R it had some heft to it, not as much as the H&R, but still hefty.

The sales clerk then handed me a Mossberg 590 special purpose and I said, oh yeah, I like this. He said, This is basically the shotgun our military uses, it even has a bayonet lug. I liked the feel of the gun, much lighter than the H&R or Savage, magazine capacity 8+1 and I liked the vented handguard on the barrel, made it look cool. Price was the same as the Savage, I bought it. :)

I like my Pardner Pump Protector. Think I paid $180 late 2010. Having swing swivels is a nice touch. Finish wears off the steel receiver really easily but that's fine for its given role and purpose. It gets scuffed up a lot & I don't feel bad about it. I've recommended them to others.

May try to take it to a shotgun course later this year.

Lol, We all have gone after one thing and came back with something different.

Mine has been rock-solid. good3.gif

A friend/co-worker liked them so much, and considered them such a good value, he bought two.

I slapped a Knoxx SpecOps recoil-reducing stock on mine -- fit absolutely flush.

I bought mine strictly as an HD shotgun, so the 18" bead-sighted barrel is fine for me. But I recall hearing that if one wanted spare barrels, there's a shotgun made for Canadian distribution by Norinco with barrels that fit perfectly. I can't for the life of me recall what the brand name was on that shotgun.

If you got a new 590 Special Purpose for $275 + tax you did very well. You went from looking at value priced good pumps, to getting a screaming deal on a high end pump. Let us know how it shoots for you.

Dropping an extra hundred bucks over the cost of a Pardner on a 590SP was no bad deal at all, in anybody's book.

I don't think you'll be unhappy with it at all, just keep an eye on how the magazine spring holds up. If it starts getting flaky about feeding the last round or two, replace it toot sweet.
