I'm wondering what the general concensus is about Hack. Is he a credit or a thorn in the side of the military, and by extension, the USA itself?

When I first became aware of him, I was fairly impressed. Now that I see more of him over time, the word is slipping from "impressed" to "DEpressed", I think.
The words "Rabble Rouser" seems to come to mind more often. I'm beginning to believe the man is only driven by a grudge for his former employer.

There have been several threads concerning Col Hackworth, one of the most notable recently was:

http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74333&highlight=Hackworth

You may want to do a search and find more. I think that the general concensus of those who replied to the above thread was that he was due respect for his deeds in uniform but has lost a lot of respect for the way he criticizes the military now. He probably has some good points but they are lost in the way he delivers his message.

I think at one time he was probably a credible "pundit", but became so enamored of his "stardom" that he will do whatever it takes to get his face on TV, and you don't get alot of face time on TV these days without being controversial. I think TV does that to alot of people.

Whether you agree with his commentary on the military or not, he is due the respect for what he accomplshed in uniform and how he treated and backed his men under him while in that uniform.

He speaks his mind and states opinions, not much different than right here in this forum right?

Don't have to agree with him to respect his positions and right to exercise his first amendment rights if I'm not mistaken.

Well, I have to respect his right to exercise his First Ammendment rights, just as I respect the First Ammendment rights of the Brady Bunch, the VPC, and Hillary Clinton. I don't have to respect the position of any of them, and I don't.

Hackworth is a decorated veteran whose military service should be respected (as with John Kerry), but that respect doesn't automatically extend to all his subsequent statements and actions (as with John Kerry).

"Hackworth is a decorated veteran whose military service should be respected (as with John Kerry),"

Mentioning Hackworth's service in the same breath with Kerry's is a sacriledge. Hackworth did much more to deserve his reputation. I don't think there is nearly the controversy over Hackworth and his combat record as there is over Kerry's.

Sorry, I don't see it that way. As much as I'd like it to be different, most of the "controversy" over Kerry is much ado about nothing. Both served. Both were decorated. Both did things later that, IMO, destroyed any respect they were due.

Except that Hackworth probably earned his medals a lot more honestly and genuinely (if that's a word) than Kerry

At one point in time I've no doubt that he was both a good soldier and a good leader.

Nowadays he's nothing more than a soundbite generator seeking glorious facetime on the nooze.

Justin got it. Though Hackworth also claimed decorations he didn't earn (like he didn't have enough fruit salad already?!?) and will even admit he ran a whorehouse in Vietnam. And the list of pimps out there I belive is vanishingly small.

Thanks for posting this. I wondered who got this thing going. I'm surprised it was the Col. Hackworth. I hope he understands what few allies we had on our side has now dropped to none. We are on our own. What a way to fight a war.

The former website where I used to work (stomped.com) interviewed hackworth back in... '99 or '00 I think.. anyway in the interview he claimed that video games were programming our children to be mindless killers and that the physics models were somehow super enough to allow a child to shoot a gun really well in real life.

I don't know about you guys, but Quake, SOF and Tribes probably did more to hurt my shooting skill than they ever did to help it. Sometimes when I'm down at the range I feel compelled to use my rocket launcher to help me lift off of the ground and my spinfusor to knock down an APC unit. :p I mean, using that crosshair really improved my aim!!

This guy is a blinkin crank. He may have served his country honorably, but now he is just coming up with ridiculous theories to get air time.
