HALT -- Who Goes There

I knew about it, but never cared to visit. I have 4 sites that I have open at all time on my browser tabs (THR, Defensive Carry, SHTFMilitia, and Zombie Squad - can you tell where my interests lie?) and I have enough to do with keeping up with them, and trying to learn morse code, and build pepsi-can stoves, and....well, you get the idea. It's guns and survivalism for me, I don't need to talk about much else.

Not a member (yet) at APS, but do read a few posts there occasionally. Some good stuff there.

ArfinGreebly

I didn't know you were local. I'm in Bliss ID. We could have gone shootin'.....:D
Unfortunately I have to leave and go back to seattle. (Woman didn't work out)

You'd expect me to be a member over there (and I am). ;)

I find APS to be a great place to pick up random non-gun info so I mostly read.

That said, The Politics Place, is a pretty handy area over there and should provide folks an outlet to discuss politics.

Gun Related?

Fair question.

It's more "forum related" by way of reminding people where the non gun-related stuff is supposed to go.

We get a fair amount of non-gun stuff here pretty regularly.

We have to remind people a) that this is a gun forum, and b) where the off-topic stuff belongs.

And lately, with the increased focus on politics in our daily lives, we see an increase in venting/griping/discussing about . . . politics.

It usually starts off with a post outlining or inquiring about some candidate's position on gun control or gun rights. Which is fine. And it would be fine if that's where the discussion stayed.

It almost never does. Within half a dozen posts it's become a shopping list of what's wrong with Candidate X outside of gun issues. And then we have to close it.

So, every so often, we have to remind people where that stuff goes.

True, telling people where off-topic discussions belong isn't strictly gun related but it's what you have to do as part of directing traffic on a gun forum.

Does that help?

ArfinGreebly,

I didn't intend to come off sounding snarky or anything. After re-reading it can very well be interpreted that way, however, honestly it wasn't my intent.

I appreciate your response. It did clear the water for me. However, as I type this, an idea has come to me. I don't know how feasible it is though as I don't have experience moderating forums. As you stated, many threads begin on-topic but spiral out of control. I've read some of those threads and for the most part the original post may make a good on-topic point but then the inevitable political debates ensue with a few on-topic responses to the OP peppered in.

I'm wondering if

A. It is possible to simply delete an off-topic response to an on-topic post leaving others with on-topic comments free to respond?

B. That's even something the moderators here would be willing to do. (As I mentioned I don't have experience in this, so I don't know if this would just create more hoops for the moderators to jump through.)

Just a thought that came to me that I figured I'd share. It seems, to me anyway, that would leave some good topics open for discussion without one or two (or 35, as the case may be) bad apples ruining the whole bunch.

I spend way more time on APS than on THR - during the last year anyway.

BUT...

I don't post much over there. Mostly lurk with the occasional post. APS has a very cliqueish feel to it. And if you're not a member of the clique...

Think - city slicker - 1960's - walks into a bubba bar somewhere deep in the heart of GA hill country. You'll probably get out alive if you keep yur mouth shut and don't order something stupid like a manhattan - maybe.

I just joined, anything I can do to help. Keep up the good work.

I think a civil, no holds barred, open subject, debate and discussion forum is positive addition to any board. A board's membership is a community of individuals more or less. Individuals are multi-dimensional. If you only discuss and debate one range of subjects; you limit what can be contributed or gained from the group's participation.

Whatcha need...

Whatcha really really need...

is for everyone who registers here, to get an automatic, free, complimentary, no-salesman-will-call registration to APS.

And a magic mod button that can move off-topic posts to APS, with a link.

Sorta like having roundtable back, only in the shop instead of the livingroom.

I like APS. Guns are a part of my life - not MY ENTIRE LIFE. True, the topics are offbeat (and just plain silly) at times, but you can ask just about any question, about any subject, and you'll likely get good information from some knowledgeable folks. It's kinda like the THR bar - perhaps a whine bar.
