I posted this on the Ruger forum, but no response so far. Thought I'd try here...
At a recent show, I noticed some brand new stainless 4" GP's with fixed sights, both short and long lugs chambered in .357. There was also a short lug blue one in .357. I thought they would be .38's? Unusual? (I got the dealer's # )
Thanks.

They were all brand new. That's why I was wondering if I stumbled upon a "catch" and should act on one - even though I don't really need it?

man i got jipped on a GP 100 6" Stainless...gun shop wanted $325 I was pulling out cash money and they guy behind the counter said it sold yesterday....man was I bummed...but that is what i get for not coming around for 2-3 months...not telling how many deals i missed in that time.

Might have been a contract overrun or a cancellation. I've not seen GP100s, other than Canadian contract revolvers, with fixed sights and 4 inch barrels.

From Gorgeous to Gorgans

Rugers are still the best deal in revolvers. Smith is starting to price themselves out of the ball park. Crappy triggers and hammers, ugly and horrible finish on stainless. I wouldn't buy one of their 686s now. I'd find someone with a primo 686-1 and buy that. The classic revolvers were gorgeous, the new ones gorgans.

I'd never get a modern day Smith. But funny you should say that. At the same show I saw the Rugers, I bought a NIB 686-1 with 4" barrel. So one can buy a good S&W for the price of a new Ruger. That in itself makes it hard to spring for a GP - as good as they are.

I bought one at Gander Mountain @ 2 years ago and planned on using it for a car gun; mechanically it was good overall (a bit loose compared to a NIB GP-100); it shot a bit low for me but was comfortable with full-bore .357 magnum loads; I was a bit impulsive with my shopping at the time and used it as a trade-in on something else...

I soon regretted getting rid of it and it was gone before I returned to the shop I traded it to; another importer had them, but the only shop in the area that dealt with that importer gave me a bunch of crap about misfires and bad timing and that he had to return 2 of them and he refused to order anymore...

I decided that continuing the argument with him was not worth my high blood pressure, so I left and haven't gone back...I guess that his 'superiority complex' was worth more than making a sale and any future business from me

if you can snag one, get it; if you have a problem with it, get Ruger to fix it and overhaul it (even if they charge you for the work)...you cannot beat a DAO Ruger revolver for overall strength and durability in a purely defensive handgun

like I said, I wish that I had kept mine!

Got a 3" stainless early this year. The dealer said it was a Canadian trade in- that felt right as it had importer's markings. It's bright stainless, tight as a drum and dead on at 7 yards. It had some dings which Flitz pretty well took care of. $264.00 out the door. It's my first GP100 (hard to break me away from Security Six). It's a life time keeper.

Never trade or sell a Ruger

One of the first guns I had was a 4" GP100. Fixed it all up and decided I wanted an auto... a couple of autos later, i wish I had a 3" or 4" GP100. I have a S&W with sentimental value, but wish it were a Ruger. I do have my 3" SP101, but it needs a bigger brother to hang around with.

I happen to be debating the exact opposite of that, I am thinking of trading in my Ruger P89 in for a GP 100, think I'll just wait a few more paychecks and have em both.

Although, the paycheck I got today was exactly what they were asking for a NIB GP 100 at the local shop.... maybe graduation day I'll make a trip.
