Has a gun dealer ever ripped you off or tried to? What happened?

Purchase a Seecamp 380-and they went for $750 or more. A gunshop I stopped at a few times and took CCW class did transfers for nothing for NRA members-I thought. When I discussed a transfer with him all he could say was 10%....yuk.

No, just didn't want to give me as much as I thought they should.

There is one gun shop in Houston that always tells customers to keep their mags unloaded, only keep one loaded and change it out to let the spring rest. I have never had them tell me that, but I have heard them say it when in there buying ammo.

Not Really

I'm kinda obsessively analytic.

I study, I research, I question.

When I was real new, I bought stock rifles new in retail stores where the prices were all pretty standard.

When I started buying through smaller shops, I first went online and checked MSRP at the manufacturer, shopped at least two other places to compare prices, and then picked the dealer I liked best as long as his price wasn't stupid.

Most of my purchases have been new. All of my Ruger MkII pistols were used, but I shopped first, and knew the right price beforehand.

I have a used carbine that I love, and another that needs love.

I have had a couple of guys try to push me into a marginal deal. Both times I finally purchased down the street.

All in all, caution & patience have worked for me.
There have been a couple of deals I wished I'd had the money for. Matched set of Marlin Camp Carbines with less than 500 rounds each. Pretty and clean. Shiny bores. Just didn't have the cash. Sigh.

Its been tried MANY times, but nothing bad actually has happened. My inlaws live in Nashville and every time we visit I hit the pawn shops to see what is in there. One particular shop on Charlotte Pike seems to have more than their share of dips working there. 1st time I went in a guy (skate boarder dude) tried to sell me a heavy used marlin 60 for $150, I just laughed, he said its a great deal, I said yes it is for you. I can go to WW and pick up a new one for $108 (at the time) and you took it in on a pawn for about $35 or $40 bucks, I ended up giving him $55 for it out the door. Next time I went in found a rough rusted S&W 38 snubby (would have been a decent truck pc), Had it priced at $350. Young black girl behind the counter told me how great a price it was. I laughed and told her I could have bought 2 in better shape back here for that, (I was going to strip the gun, reblue it and put in the truck). She got offended and so I left, went back the next day and got it from the manager for $185. Pretty much the same story every time I stop in, but I know what the average stuff is worth and I make decent (to me) offers after I have heard their stories and usually end up making the buy! But again I usually just tell them to go get whoever is in charge and deal straight with them!

I was in Long Island one day, god only knows why, hate driving there but I found a gun shop and decided to go in and take a look around. Alot of new stuff but a nice sized collection of Milsurps. Looking over the rack and found a very nice looking Mosin with a PU scope mount. Tag had "Ask at counter" instead of a price. I looked it over, 1927 Hex reciever, really cheesy looking scope mount, looked like the type of metal that breaks instead of bends, bolt had been cut and rewelded. Asked about it at the counter.

"That right there is an Authentic WWII Mosin Nagant Sniper Rifle. See those marks in the stock up at the hand guard?"

"You mean the dings and dents?"

"Heck no, those right there are kill marks, this rifle claimed the lives of 8 German's"

"Riiiiiiight. How much you looking for"

"You seem like a good kid, I could let it go for $780. It is a collectible after all"

The ONLY dealer in the whole area in Massachusetts was selling used beat up Beretta 92s that looked like they were run over by a car and dragged for several miles for $600.00.
Back in the '80s, there was a gunstore in Cleveland on Lorain Rd. They had Taurus PT99s for, I think, in the $750 range...
