have you ever forgot you own a gun?

I could not name or identify about half of the guns I own without the aid of a prepared list. If someone stole a gun from me, it is highly likely I wouldn't notice for a year or more unless it is one I shoot. So if a law was passed that required you to notify the PD of a stolen gun within 72 hrs, it is very likely I would not be in compliance should it happen.

Have a couple long guns that I eventually discovered I stored at my father's house about 15 years ago when I was traveling a lot and didn't have a house or apartment. I was looking for them and could not find them. Figured they were stolen, but that didn't make a lot of sense.

A few months ago I helped my 81 yr old father acquire a German Luger (P08). He really wanted one and couldn't wait to get it. We watched several auctions on GunBroker and finally found one that satisfied his requirements and price limit. After the gun arrived I gave my dad a proper sized hardside case to keep his new treasure in. He was as pleased as he could be. My dad suffers from early stages of Alzheimers, and as it would just so happen, he experienced a minor memory lapse episode shortly after getting the Luger. I called a day or so later and learned from my mom that my dad had the episode, and that he didn't even remember buying and receiving the Luger. It wasn't long before his memory came back, but not without some prodding from my mom & I. Even then, for a while, he didn't remember where he had put it. This all occurred within a period of just 3-5 days. It's tough seeing the realities of such a condition on a loved one.

Those of you (us) that are getting along in age should create and maintain good records of all of your weapons. I keep my list current using Excel.

Yes, a few years ago I was doing an ammo inventory/inspection of my ammo that was stored in surplus ammo cans. I found one can with a Raven P-25 25 cal pistol and cleaning supplies. Don't have it documented in my weapons purchased/sold log and have no idea where it came from. Some of my ammo cans were bought at garage sales and could have been left in the can by the prior owner.

I have 6 handguns and 2 rifles. I'm not forgetting 8 guns.

Wait, 9. I have a disassembled H&R top break. I guess I did forget one.

I await the day I once again have too many to keep track of ...

I have done this back in the day when I had 30+ pieces and before I got married .....:banghead:

Now I am divorced and pretty much in the the crapper w/ my health ,1 glock,1 shotgun,1 WASR-10....could it be worse, hell yes...but it could be oh so much nicer....Insert daydream of yester year ..

Now taking 7.62x39 FMJ donations ...

Enjoy finding pieces you forgot you had to you all .......

I've always wanted a Savage 24 in 22 Magnum / 20 ga. Finally found one, a fixer-upper for a good price. Fixed it up and was happy with it. I did a full inventory last December and found not one, but two other 22 Mag/20 ga 24s that I had bought 16 and 8 years prior.

I am glad we have the THR, I had my guns at my parents house while I was in Iraq. Got home, got guns, took a month to realize two were missing!! I searched and finally gave up. A month later cleaning the garage I picked up empty gun case and heard clanking! Both were inside, I have no clue how they got there.

I have done this before with hand guns. My preference with shooting is rifles, but I own several handguns and they live in a drawer. I opened it once to get one to take to the range. I had gone through my list in my head picking which ones to take, and I had forgot about two of them.

I have a friend who posts here that does that so much I always have to ask him if he has one in the safe when he mentions he wants something. Some of the better re-discovers he has had was a mint Colt Python, Colt 1911 still in the box with the 20.00 hang tag and a new glock 17 found in his truck box.

That is really funny. I thought I was bad.

You forget about firearms because there are far more important things going on in your life. My serious interest in firearms runs in about 5-year cycles. I rarely even shoot a gun in the off years other than an occasional plinking episode.

I found a couple Colt derringers in a box I had stored magazines in. I was just going to toss the box, and then decided to take a look.

No, but I have done this with DVDs and books in the past. I guess when I own guns in the same numbers as books and DVDs it might well happen.

It sucks to mail order a $50 computer book and realize you already have a copy of it, and the exact same edition too. If you had two pistols of the exact same make and model at least you could play 'The Matrix'/'John Woo Presents' with them. (of course you won't hit anything, but it looks cool - understand?)

Every now and then I forget one or another in the inevitable list of "how many/what firearms do you own?" when running through them in my head.

I done it with DVD's, books, and knives. (You should see my food pantry!) It's interesting how your interests remain the same and the same things appeal to you. I have more than once bought the same birthday card for someone the following year.

That's a great excuse!

Next time I want a gun in the same caliber I already own I can tell the wife that I forgot I already owned one!

Naw, wouldn't work, she knows me better than that!

No, never, well yes maybe...

:D
I had an incident a few years back where I got dressed in my duty uniform, put on my gear, footwear, cap, etc started to leave in a rush, then looked down and saw no .38spl in my holster, :uhoh:. That was a laugh.

I also would put my duty weapon in a padded plastic gun case and would get out w/o it. That's not to smooth either.

My state's weapon policy is kinda lame in regards to carrying/transporting loaded weapons.

You can't do this, you can't do that type BS,.
In a way I can understand it because of the security industry in general and the "caliber" (get it, :D) of people in some of the armed posts.

I've worked with "trained" security officers who had unloaded weapons on duty, would buy $100-$200 firearms to use on duty, didn't know how work a level 2/3 holster, never had speedloaders, speedstrips or spare mags, etc.

Scary but true...:uhoh:

That wouldn't work with me either since I collect 22 rimfire firearms. For me it is whether I have 4 or 5 of the same thing? I usually remember that I have at least one.

My wife and I recently had a contest. Do I own more guns than she does pairs of shoes. The "loser" got to buy a new gun or pair of shoes. Pellet guns and house shoes did count and she had me beat by around 10.

I had kinda forgot about a couple of handguns(bersa380 and Taurus PT22) and a Mosin. I was only of by 2 or 3 in my mental count.

No I haven't, but my son-in-law seems to forget he has my Ithaca 87

Judicator it's not Alzheimer's issues its CRS for those of us over 50--Can't Remember S#@%!!!
