Have you ever sold a gun then bought it back?

I haven't yet, but I may. I sold a 4" S&W 686-4 to a friend of my father-in-law a couple years ago when I needed some cash. He is a collector and has probably never even shot it. He told my father-in-law if I ever want it back, just let him know.

My son loved shooting that gun, and I may buy it back to give to him as his first handgun when he leaves home.

I bought a new Ruger P89, kept it a year or so, then traded it in on something else.
The store owner gave it to her son as a gift.
The owners son is a friend of my brother and sold it to him a few years later.
My brother gave it to my nephew when he moved out of the house.
It's a well travelled pistol.

umm, no

But I'm not that infected by this hobby just yet. I have an old .410 that I haven't used in 20 years. Instead of selling it, I plan to give it to my nephew in hopes of keeping it in the family. I have no children. He's 9 and his dad's an avid hunter, so it will get used, but will likely leave the family for a trade in when he grows a bit more and moves up the scales.

It may offer me a nice discount on another purchase, but I refinished the stock as a teenager and it turned out better than new, so there is some sentimental attachment in that regard. Plus, I do recall plugging a couple ducks with it, more sentiment there.

Doug,
do that and he will cherish that sidearm for the rest of his life. My dad had a 19-4 6" that he sold, bought back and gave to me when I turned 18. I have a 1911 now that is my carry gun (ever try concealing a 6" revolver?) but any other time, the 19-4 is the weapon of choice.

Man-O-War and I traded/sold one Remington-Rand 1911 back and forth 13 times over the years before it was sold out of the loop to someone else.

Yes, I've done that several times. I do a lot of trading with friends and relatives and I always ask for the right of first refusal when I sell or trade something to them. I've gotten a few nice guns that I got rid of throughout the years back that way. I recently got back a nice 2 tone Sig P226 in 9mm that I sold a co-worker buddy of mine a few months ago. I needed the money at the time so I foolishly sold it. I was very happy when the co-worker asked if I was interested in getting it back. I traded him a Kahr MK9 that he wanted. I already have a Kahr PM9 that I like better than the heavier MK9, so I got rid of a gun I had no need for and got a nice one that I really wanted. Everyone was happy.

A number of years ago I transitioned from the 9mm to .40 S&W. I had a Sig P228 that i was a wonderful shooter. I sold it to a buddy who reeally liked it.

I've stuck to the one caliber rule for a long time and just a moth or so ago, I couldn;t stand it any longer and i bought the P228 back from my buddy for the same price I sold it. He'd never even shot it after he bought it from me.

Doug, do that and he will cherish that sidearm for the rest of his life. . .
Thanks for the encouragement Dan. Your message, coupled with a PM from a friend saying the same thing, has prompted me to follow through on this. I will be calling my father-in-law before the weekend to inform his friend I intend to buy the 686 back from him.

Glad to hear I am not the only one...

As I perviously mentioned, I feel pretty darn lucky to have tracked down my old Czech vz24 30-06 sporter after 28 years. Glad to hear others have had luck reclaiming an favored piece. I have been shooting it a fair bit and really enjoy it. Funny, I shoot it a whole lot better now... In talking to a gunsmith the otherday, we opened it up and low and behold the safety wire I put in the trigger to take up some of the stock trigger slack/play was still in place. I had done that when I was 13 and it still works well...

I hope anybody that reads this thread and misses some old gun to not lament. Try some detective work and a couple phone calls, heck I used a free online name search and scored in about 10 minutes. Pure luck or whatever I am chuffed to bits, all in all.

Patty

P.S - Sorry this was about a rifle in the handgun thread.
