It's a Springfield. The throat is a 1 and the muzzle is a 2. I figure the 2 means that 2 bullets can go down the muzzle side by side. I ordered the $850 service grade rifle..... they charged me $750? What happened? The serial number is 1.1xxxx million. I figure that is WWII vintage, but will have to Google it for sure. The stock is brand new.. I noticed the cmp stamp on it.
I just got home from the range, but did not take the Garand as I would have had to run a rod down it first and didn't have the time.
This time they sent 1 clip with the gun. Last time I got one of these they shorted me the clip. NO sweat as I have plenty of em'
Hey Gunny???? is this rifle too pretty to shoot? Should I wax the stock? Thanks
A 1/2 Bbl is essentially new.
A 1.1M S/N Springfield dates to JAN43.
Pull back and lock the action open and check the Bbl Manufacture and date under the Op-rod.
The Bore Numbers.
Each bore number represents 0.001" out from bore (0.300")
Given reasonable shooting practices:
- Each Throat number represents 2,000 rounds worth of erosion (empirically determined through testing by the GCA)
- Each Muzzle number represents 6,000 rounds worth of erosion (1/3 the rate of Throat erosion)
These are the U.S. Army's service requirements for Throat erosion (no Muzzle erosion was specified)
Storage for reissue.:
< 0.305" (TE5)
Shipped to Combat:
< 0.306" (TE6)
In Combat. . . . . . . :
< 0.310" (TE10)
So, given a production machine tool tolerance of +/- 0.001" on the Throat, and half that (+/- 0.0005") on the Muzzle?
A 1/2 Bbl. could be reasonably estimated at ~ 3,000 rounds from an original 0.5/0.5 Bbl, with ~ 8-12,000 rounds (0.306-8") of reasonable accuracy left.
As for the $850 Service Grade..?
Don't see one on the
CMP Sales Page.
As for the Stock?
Dismount the wood, give it light coats of BLO, and then put it out in the hot sun to percolate.
When it quits, bring it into the shade to cool, and then re-coat/percolate.
This will feed the stock quickly, and get it on its way to a caramel finish.
Don't wax it until you are completely finished w/ the initial BLO... if at all.
EDIT:
P.S
"...if it slides... Grease it!"
Including the top 1/3 or the Oprod Spring
